Online Learning

Studying through Federation University Australia online allows you to complete exactly the same course as an on-campus student, but with the flexibility of studying from home. It’s the perfect option if you need to balance your studies with work, family or other commitments. Instead of attending classes in person, your course is delivered entirely through Online Learning, which may include recorded audio or video lectures, a set of readings, questions posted in a discussion forum or an online quiz.

In addition to this entirely online study option, some distance study is available where you will occasionally attend workshops or weekend classes throughout the year. These study options are called Flexible Delivery and Block Mode.

Camp Street Campus, the Arts Academy

The Arts Academy is an exciting creative village located in the arts precinct of central Ballarat. It is a hub of creativity within a campus of inquiry and exploration – a place that provides a stimulating, friendly and supportive learning environment with a focus on individual attention and development. The campus is home to approximately 400 students and staff.

Restaurants, cinemas, hotels, nightclubs, shops and galleries and theatres are all just minutes away, so students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the lifestyle of central Ballarat.

This regional setting is an ideal place to focus on learning in a safe and manageable environment while enjoying the benefits of a strong youth sub-culture.

The Art Gallery of Ballarat and Her Majesty’s Theatre form part of the redevelopment of the Camp Street Arts Precinct. These have close links with the Arts Academy, as do smaller theatres and galleries where students can connect with the community.

Gippsland Campus, the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design

Situated amongst a small forest and natural landscape, the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design is home to students working at the cutting edge of contemporary art in well-equipped workshops and studios. The Centre provides a strong link to the contemporary art world and is home to the well-established Switchback Galley. It has close connections with the Art Resource Collective (ARC), the oldest artist-run workshop and exhibition space in Victoria; Latrobe Contemporary Gallery; Gippsland Art Gallery, Sale; and Latrobe Regional Gallery, where our graduates can be found in curating and a range of other roles.

Historically, the Gippsland region has fostered an edgy and contemporary art scene, with an art academy operating on the Gippsland campus site for over forty years. The centre is also well-known for its studio-based online higher degrees.

Innovative education methods include team and mentor group teaching and a core subject in Australian Indigenous Art and Design. The Centre attracts leading Australian artists as lecturers and combines a strong sense of community with rigorous standards of scholarship and discourse.

Success stories

Kyle Findlay

Graphic Design

“After completing high school, I was accepted into the Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design.

I chose this course after speaking to past students that I was friends with, and they highly recommended it for its quality staff and the contact hours you have with them.

You get to do a wide scope of projects, covering all fields of design, but one of my favourites was creating my own t-shirt brand, something I plan to do in the very near future.

Since graduating, I now have the role as a junior designer at Passport Design, a studio situated in South Yarra, Melbourne. At Passport we major in packaging and I am privileged enough to be given the opportunity to work with companies such as Coca Cola, Nestle, Fonterra, BP, Kraft and other smaller boutique brands.

The Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design gave me the skills to move straight into industry, and I would highly recommend it to others.”

Maddie Durie

Graphic Design/Multimedia

“I had been interested in Graphic Design for some time and had searched the universities where this program was offered. I attended open days and researched the differences in the programs. A lot of uni’s offer short courses and folio preparation classes in the holidays, I attended multiple of these at different uni’s. I noticed the staff at this uni were so much more friendly and helpful, even in the interview for my program, I was relaxed and positive!

Coming from a small country town, Ballarat was a great move for me personally. Living on residence has been a great experience. Camp Street res is in a great location, my classes are just next door and we are right in the heart of Ballarat. I have learned to live independently, cooking my own meals and washing my own clothes, and made great new friends!

The Mentor Program here was an invaluable program to be a part of. We met students who were going to be in our class, and were mentored by a second or third year student, who could give us advice on our program, and help us whenever possible.

When choosing a program and university, explore all of your options, go to open days, talk to current students, and get all the information you can.

Choose what you think is best for you in the long run. Listen to other’s opinions, but don’t change your mind based on what others think. I have chosen the right uni and program for me, I couldn’t be happier!”

Michael Gallop

Visual Arts Graduate

Michael Gallop completed the Bachelor of Visual and Media Arts followed by a Master of Visual Arts at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design.

“I followed my heart into a Visual and Media Arts degree and after completion I went straight onto my Masters and haven’t looked back since. It’s given me the opportunity to develop a set of creative skills that I otherwise wouldn’t have.”

Michael started as a painter then became interested in woodcarving, mould making and printmaking. The cross-disciplinary nature of the course at Gippsland allows for this mobility in media.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to now be represented by a Melbourne gallery through contacts that I made at the university. This in itself is an amazing first step and I’m excited to see what other opportunities lie ahead.”

Kobie Notting

Visual and Media Arts

Studying at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design has provided Kobie Notting with a supportive, personal study experience, alongside access to a network of

contemporary art practice.

“The smaller classes and personal support I received from lecturers and tutors at the Gippsland campus definitely provided me with learning and employment opportunities that I couldn’t imagine finding anywhere else. This included the opportunity to apply my skills in a real-world setting through industry placement as a graphic designer with Westernport Water.”

Kobie says her industry placement experience is now allowing her to put her academic skills to the test in the workplace. “My goal has always been to apply creative skills in the real world, and I think the focus on both critical excellence and practical application will give me a great chance to do that.”
