Scholarship Winners!

SCHOLARSHIPS

The Chamber and the Community!

BE A PART

It’s that time of the year! The Greater Carmel-Mahopac Chamber of Commerce scholarship committee is preparing its annual scholarship fund campaign. Last year we awarded scholarships to 15 students from our local area. The scholarship fund helps deserving student cover some expenses for college such as books, laptop, or moving expense. Without your generosity and support, none of this would have been possible.

This year our goal is to surpass last year contributions of $16,000. We hope you will join us once again in reaching our fundraising goal. 100% of your contribution goes towards the scholarship, contributing to the continuation of higher education for our next generation. All chamber members that contribute to the scholarship between $50 up to $499 will be mentioned in the website, Facebook, brochure and local newspaper. Major contributors of $500 or more will have their business logos displayed as well as the opportunity to choose and present in person your private award recipient.

For more information, please contact the chamber office 845-628-5553. We sincerely thank you for your time and continued support.

Dear Fellow Members of the Greater Mahopac Carmel Chamber of Commerce & Board of Directors,

Who says that you cannot fight City Hall? The Town of Carmel Business Community did. Actually, it was not a fight, but a dialog that took place during the February 25th, 2015, Town Board meeting. The Mahopac Carmel Chamber of Commerce led by

Executive Director, Mike Bucci, rallied members of the business community to attend that meeting. On the agenda was the “Proposed Signage Changes” being put forth by the Town Board. Those changes would affect many businesses in the Town of Carmel and the response to Mike’s call to action was overwhelming. The Town Hall board room was filled to capacity and constructive conversation resulted. The business community got the chance to speak and express their thoughts, concerns and ideas. The Town Board listened and was receptive to what they were hearing. The end result of this meeting was the proposed changes were tabled and a committee be established to explore any potential changes The committee is to be comprised of Chamber Board, Town Board and Business Community members. Success! The

Business Community was heard and will continue to be heard! Well done Michael!

The “Shop Putnam Business and Home Expo” will take place on Sunday, April 19, 2015, at the Mahopac High School from 11am to 4pm. This year the venue has changed and all booths will be indoors. With over 100 businesses expected to participate, the Expo continues to be one of the largest business event held in Putnam County. Don’t miss out on this networking opportunity and on showcasing your business. To participate please call the Chamber office or register online. Furthermore, I want to thank the Mahopac School District for agreeing to be the site-host for this event.

As stated in last month’s newsletter, the April networking dinner will also be the evening that Chamber members vote to elect two board members among the candidates running to fill the open seats. To date, there are three potential candidates who have expressed interest in filling two seats. The official term is for three years, May 1, 2015 through April 30, 2018. A seat on the Board is a great way to increase your networking opportunities, get more exposure and do something good for the community. As a Board member, you will be expected to attend Board of Directors’ meetings, Chamber dinner meetings, serve as a Board liaison to a committee, chair a standing committee and assist at Chamber events. If interested in running for a seat on the Board, please contact members of the nominating committee: Tom Casey of Edward Jones Investment; (845) 621-8647, Richie D’Andrea of Park Ford; (845) 628-8800 and Kelly Pucio of Putnam County Savings Bank; (845) 628-1313 or call the Chamber Office; (845) 628-5553.

What makes what we do so special that you invest so much time?

Well, we like the idea of helping our community. It is important to us to give as much as we can, time or money, but I think that time is more valuable than money ever could be. I would like to see more things getting done, instead of a lot of hot air being blown around.

What is your favorite thing to volunteer for and why?

We have a lot vested in the Re-lay for Life, Paint the Town Purple is one of our biggest deals, we can raise money and awareness right here at work, and we donate our time and good taste to decorate a couple of buildings on Route 6. We had always been asked to help with the beautification of the area, but it never seems to get off the

ground; keep trying!

Why did you get started?

We got started to help our com-munity and, let’s face it, to bring attention to the flower shop. That’s the bottom line. You do nice things and nice things will come back to you. We have always paid it forward.

By Mike BuCCi

What makes what we do so special that you invest so much time?

I volunteer for committees and try to help wherever needed be-cause it gives me a chance to meet new people, get involved with decision making for events and it’s a way to give back to the com-munity that supports our business. Since joining the Chamber, I have found myself surrounded by many positive people that offer business advice and introduce me to other successful business owners.

What is your favorite thing to volunteer for and why?

I can’t say that I really have a favorite thing to volunteer for, but have enjoyed the Casino Night, Expo and Street Fair the most. One thing that I can say though, it is amazing how much planning

and work goes into having these events. As a business owner, we can’t expect to get much from these events if we don’t all give a little back in return.

Why did you get started?

Getting involved with the Chamber has always been some-thing that was considered, but

This is only our second column and we have lots

of news to share with you all!

Thierry Davin, from Brewster Pastry is recovering after being hospitalized for several weeks. He’s doing much better and getting back into the swing of things. Thierry has been so generous so often by bringing delicious cookies and pastries, to our meetings. We wish you the best Thierry!

James Pfeiffer, from M&T Bank and Pozzitiv Productions, recently had surgery on his knee and is still recovery, which must be so difficult in this frigid weather. James was at the last Chamber meeting with Robert Pozzi (his partner and brother-in-law). Once again they volunteered their D.J. services to provide us with great music for the evening. Thank you both so much. And James, we hope you’re doing better soon.

Speaking of the last meeting, we not only had Pozzitiv Productions donating their expertise for the evening, The Route 6 Tap House was also extremely generous by closing their restaurant for us and for sponsoring all the food for the evening! Almost 150 Members came out to enjoy a fun evening. Owner’s, Pat and her son Danno, went all out to treat us to a very enjoyable evening. The Service was wonderful, and the food was so, so good! Thank you so much, Pat and Danno, for your tremendous hospitality

Our new members, Maria and Manuel Quezada, from Six Diamonds Tree Service and Landscaping, haven’t even been formally introduced at a dinner meeting, and they volunteered and helped with the Tree Lighting! Maria told us about her son, Manuel, a Carmel H.S. 2012 Graduate. Manuel attended Zion Bible College and worked their family business for a while and in October he joined the Marines. This past January he was stationed in Paris Island and was Honor Graduate of his Platoon! Congratulations, Manuel, and thank you for serving our Country! Can you imagine how proud the Quezadas are of their only son?!

Well, thank to all, who contributed to the column, it’s so nice to have some news to share amongst all of us. So, keep sending whatever you’d like to have us put in our column. Just jot down the info and I’ll write it up for our newsletter. If you’re not sure about anything, I’d be happy to chat with you. Stay warm everyone!

Putnam Hospital Center Feature

PHC Receives Women’s Choice Award

Putnam Hospital Center, a Health Quest affili-ate, was recently named a Women’s Choice Award recipient. It is now recognized among America’s Best Hospitals for Orthopedics, acknowledging its commitment to providing exceptional patient care and treatment. The award is based on rigor-ous criteria that include patient satisfaction mea-surements and consideration of areas of clinical excellence.

Putnam Hospital Center qualified for this highly selective annual list based on an in-depth proprietary scoring process that utilizes data re-ported by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The selection process identifies those hospitals that provide comprehensive orthopedic services and that meet criteria for patient satis-faction and surgical excellence based on women’s needs and preferences.

“The Orthopedic Center at Putnam Hospital Center is renowned for its quality of care and su-perior results,” said James Caldas, the hospital’s president and CEO. “To have a third party en-dorsement such as this is testimony to the quality of our people, programs, procedures, and facili-ties.”

“As one of America’s Best Hospitals for Ortho-pedics, Putnam Hospital Center is demonstrating

its commitment to fulfill the needs and prefer-ences of women by meeting the highest standards of excellence and performance,” said Delia Passi, CEO and founder of the Women’s Choice Award. “It was selected due to excellent ratings in areas such as post-treatment complications, patient recommendation ratings, availability of micro-scopic surgery and adequate post-surgical care.”

According to the National Osteoporosis Foun-dation, osteoporosis, a disease characterized by weakened and fragile bone tissue, is one of the key diseases that predominately affects women. A 2013 foundation study found half of all women age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteo-porosis in their lifetime. Of the estimated 10 mil-lion Americans with osteoporosis, approximately 80 percent are women. The foundation also notes that a woman’s risk of breaking a hip is equal to her combined risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer.

For information, visit www.health-quest.org/ ortho.

Putnam Hospital Center is a 164-bed not-for-profit acute care hospital in Carmel offering the highest quality medical, surgical, psychiatric, pe-diatric and obstetrical/gynecological care, as well as 24 hour emergency services.

Thank You to Our Advocate Members

This is the age of technology. Every

thing is done so quickly. You need information you just GOOGLE and poof magically the answer just appears. Sometimes I feel we would be so much better off if we went back to the “Father Knows Best” or “Leave it to Beave” era. But that ain’t happening!

What does this have to do with Thank You Notes and why are you reading this in the Chamber Newsletter. Well I happen to know that as a business we all need to ramp up our contacts

with our clients and customers. We are in a very competitive business atmosphere and businesses need to take advantage of any and all tools available to them. A great and mostly forgotten tool from that bygone era is the Thank You Note.

Think about it, when was the last time you received a thank you note from someone you purchased a

product or service from. Today it is a lost art. Heck, when is the last time you received anything personal besides junk mail in your mailbox?

So, if you want to stay ahead of your competition, take some time at the end of each week and write a personal note to some of your customers and clients. You can’t imagine how appreciative your clients will be to know that you cared enough to take the time to write a few lines on a small card thanking them for their business.

You know just recently I had the opportunity to help a client with something that was not in the scope of my normal business services. She needed someone to shovel a path to her oil tanks so the delivery man could give her oil to heat her house. I could have told her it was not what we do, but it was such a small thing, and she wasn’t physically able to do it. So I went there myself, shoveled the path and refused to take the money she wanted to offer.

Why am I telling you this self gratifying story? For 2 reasons! Let me get to the first reason. Three days later I received the nicest thank you note that a business owner could hope for. I am telling you this because I know personally how powerful a thank you note is. If you want to create a tribe of clients and customers that talk you up, then you need to start sending Thank You Notes.

Thank You Notes are a powerful tool you should not leave inside your marketing tool box. If you need help with your marketing feel free to give me a shout.

Oh, what about the second reason for the self gratifying story? Marketing Bonus: She will be a client for life, telling all her friends and family about my business. Thank you cards are a great marketing strategy. Go to it!!
