Established in 2009, Depart-ment of Architecture is at-tracting students from within and outside Gujrat District. The department is creating public awareness about ar-chitecture profession in Gu-jrat District and its surround-ing small towns and cities. It aims to develop profes-sionals who think and design creatively while critically ad-dressing the socio-econom-ic, cultural, environmental conditions at local and glob-al level. Pleasing and inspir-ing ambience at the depart-ment gives the opportunity to students coming from di-verse backgrounds to pro-vide imaginative and innova-tive solutions to the design problems in hand. Design studios, well equipped with latest technological and dis-play facilities, are the places of critical, thought provoking,

stimulating discussions and assignments/projects where individual students are guid-ed by highly qualifiguid-ed faculty to develop their own archi-tectural expressions. Rich heritage of Gujrat District, its historic buildings, urban patterns, built environmental issues and future develop-ment are under study at the department where emphasis is placed on designing with sensitivity to the context. The department actively par-ticipates in research, various national and international events. Guest talks, semi-nars and study tours are ar-ranged to link the teaching at the department with society and professional practice.

Program Overview

Department of Architecture offers five year professional Bachelor of Architecture

(B.Arch.) degree program. The program is designed to equip the students with knowledge and skills need-ed to address the challeng-es posed by contemporary society and produce profes-sionals who design in sen-sitivity to socio-economic, cultural, environmental and technological realities. The major goals of programs are as follows:

• Develop the ability to create design incorporat-ing aesthetic and technical requirements that should be environmentally sustainable and relevant to the context.

• A comprehensive

understanding of relation-ship between people, build-ings and their environment, and the need to relate build-ings and the spaces between them to human needs and scales considering socio-cultural, psychological

• Adequate knowledge

of history and theories of ar-chitecture and the related arts, technologies and human sciences, together with un-derstanding of the structural design, construction and en-gineering problems, associ-ated with building design. The five year degree program has three stages; Foundation, Intermediate and Final. First year foundation is commonly taught to students enrolled in various disciplines offered at School of Art, Design & Ar-chitecture (SADA). This year introduces the students to the common basis of art, design and architecture, while also incorporating visual, graphi-cal and oral skills. The inter-mediate stage has two years (2nd and 3rd) devoted to in-troduce the students to ba-sics of architecture, enhanc-ing design skills with critical and innovative thinking. The final stage at fourth and fifth year is devoted to deepen the perception of architecture as

an activity in space and time within a given physical, socio-cultural and historical con-text. Fifth year is dedicated to broaden the exposure of the profession of architecture by creating awareness about the challenges of the archi-tectural practice, and vari-ous contemporary issues of social and built environment are discussed. Students are encouraged to develop their own individual preferences, potential, aptitude, expres-sion and design approach. During thesis study and writ-ing, the students are encour-aged to apply their concepts and philosophies in a project of their own choice by ap-plying knowledge which they have gained in the last four years.

Career Opportunity

Graduating students have various career choices. They can go into professional field as practicing architects and open up their own consul-tancy firms after gaining suit-able experience. Landscape

The Department of Ceram-ics, Glass and Metal design provides the platform to those aspiring artists who wish to pursue this medium as professionals.

This department allows the students to explore the techniques of design, pot-tery, sculpture and whatever seems fit to inspire them. Project based teaching is undertaken in studio ses-sions and in supplemented courses at the department.

Program Overview

Study of material is encour-aged and is applied in a wide range of students’ projects. Advance studies in rendering a 3 dimensional form in relation to space is inculcated in the students as they undertake the Sculp-tural Ceramics course, which is mandatory for all ceramic

students. The students enjoy a well-rounded experience as they have the collabora-tion with the ceramic indus-try and participate in national and international trade exhi-bitions. Along with the expo-sure to industry, the students also benefit from the national and international artists and practitioners who visit often and give workshops in tech-nical and artistic realms. Individual studio space for students is provided for a fo-cused, distraction free envi-ronment. State of the art gas kilns as well as Raku kilns along with different manual firing stations are provided so that the students are fa-cilitated on campus and understand the kiln mainte-nance. Specialized instruc-tion to glaze chemistry and material preparation is given to the students for better

un-derstanding of the material. Students are also taken to field trips to the ceramic in-dustry, artists’ studios and heritage sites to broaden their horizon and expand their exposure to sculptural and utilitarian ceramics. Design seminars are also held regularly to enhance their formal and conceptual study of art and design to enable them to think outside the convention and express themselves like true, well-rounded artists.
