Volunteers Needed for Yard & Garden Work

Do you have a green thumb or a strong back? We are looking for help around the church grounds. This can be done with social distancing. We have a couple volunteers who are willing to guide the process but we need more hands for the work. If you would like to help, please contact Cindy in the Parish Office.

Volunteers for Sanitizing Saturday Night

During the week Rodney does a fabulous job sanitizing the pews between Mass but they need to be cleaned on Saturday night so the pews are ready for Sunday morning. The Knights of Columbus are coordinating the Saturday night sanitization. They have a sign up sheet at the back of the church if you would like to help out with this task. If we have 4 volunteers it generally only takes about 15 minutes after Mass. If you have any questions you can contact Gerry at 353-6008 or Cindy in the parish office.

Liturgy Schedule

Now that we are back to having regularly scheduled Masses, we are working on finalizing the schedule for July, August & September for Readers, Cantors & Altar Servers. If there are dates in these months that you are not available or if you are not comfortable volunteering at this time, please email or call the office. Finalized schedule will be done on July 1.

From the Desk of Father Steve: Learning Wisdom from the Great Saints of the Church

The theme of the first half of this weekend’s Gospel reading could be summed up in saying that Jesus must hold first place in our lives. He says, “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” These are very direct and piercing words from our Lord, but they are true and most important for us to take to heart. As Christians, nothing and no one can be more important to us in our lives than our relationship with God. Period.

And it’s important for us to remember a second point: keeping God first in our life not only gives due glory and honor to God who made us, it will also most readily help us to love others as we should, and better preserve harmony and peace with those around us. This is because every human being was created to be in a relationship with God in which God is first and foremost in our life, because that is what is best for us, and that is what will make us most happy and fulfilled. We were created to love God and to be loved by Him, and God has done everything imaginable and more in order to prove that to us, even to the point of revealing Himself to us in a way that we can handle and under-stand: becoming one of us in Christ Jesus. Jesus, the Son of God and God Himself, is to be our way, our truth and our life. If anyone or anything else is more important to us in our lives than Jesus, our lives will be disordered, because we will not be living as we were made to live. As I have said before, Jesus is everything for us, brothers and sisters. Perhaps we can take some time today to ask ourselves whether Jesus truly holds first place in my life. If not, what or who do I value above Him? And what am I willing to do to make that right? Below is an excerpt from a homily by a new saint in the Church- Pope St. Paul VI.

God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve

*******************************

Not to preach the Gospel would be my undoing, for Christ himself sent me as his apostle and witness. The more remote, the

more difficult the assignment, the more my love of God spurs me on. I am bound to proclaim that Jesus is Christ, the Son of

the living God. Because of him we come to know the God we cannot see. He is the firstborn of all creation; in him all things find their being. Man’s teacher and redeemer, he was born for us, died for us, and for us he rose from the dead.

All things, all history converges in Christ. A man of sorrow and hope, he knows us and loves us. As our friend he stays by us throughout our lives; at the end of time he will come to be our judge; but we also know that he will be the complete fulfillment of our lives and our great happiness for all eternity.

I can never cease to speak of Christ for he is our truth and our light; he is the way, the truth and the life. He is our bread, our source of living water who allays our hunger and satisfies our thirst. He is our shepherd, our leader, our ideal, our comforter and our brother.

He is like us but more perfectly human, simple, poor, humble, and yet, while burdened with work, he is more patient. He spoke on our behalf; he worked miracles; and he founded a new kingdom: in it the poor are happy; peace is the foundation of a life in common; where the pure of heart and those who mourn are uplifted and comforted; the hungry find justice; sinners are forgiven; and all discover that they are brothers. The image I present to you is the image of Jesus Christ. As Christians you share his name; he has already made most of you his own. So once again I repeat his name to you Christians and I proclaim to all men: Jesus Christ is the beginning and the end, the alpha and the omega, Lord of the new universe, the great hidden key to human history and the part we play in it. He is the mediator—the bridge, if you will—between heaven and earth. Above all he is the Son of man, more perfect than any man, being also the Son of God, eternal and infinite. He is the son of Mary his mother on earth, more blessed than any woman. She is also our mother in the spiritual communion of the mystical body.

Remember: it is Jesus Christ I preach day in and day out. His name I would see echo and re-echo for all time even to the ends of the earth.

Bazaar Committee

We are looking for volunteers to help with the fall bazaar. This fundraiser for the restoration project brings in a good amount of money, but it takes a lot of people participating. If you have skills in and enjoy any of the following or if you just like to help, please, contact Cassi: cooking, running a kitchen, running a bake sale, decorating, vendor

communication, advertising, money management, carnival organizing, sign making, volunteer coordinator, writing thank yous, raffle organizer. The Fall Bazaar is scheduled for Saturday, October 10th. Watch for vendor applications to be available soon.

Thank You Garden Committee

Holy Spirit’s newly formed Garden Committee has been very busy this year! Marilyn Schaefer has been working the front gardens and coordinating the team. Deb Anderson beautified our back entrance making it much more inviting and obvious as an entrance. Marge Horihan has taken on all the perennials, particularly around the rectory

courtyard. Ann Gilbert & Nate Van Santen laid mulch on all the gardens in one evening! This group has also donated or obtained donations for all the materials. Thank you!

Cassi’s Corner

I recently had the opportunity to visit in-person with a friend that I hadn’t seen since the COVID shutdown. We quickly realized how much had happened in the past few months. We had nearly forgotten that when everything began, the recommended protocols were changing daily. Even now, as things turn toward reopening, we are faced with changing and conflicting information. This ever-changing atmosphere was/is frustrating, tiring, and stressful, but one silver lining is that we can practice living more in the moment. How often do we hear we should do that, yet our mind goes to whatever is coming next or what we should have done before? I’m not sure I really even knew how to live in the moment until COVID hit (and I’m still early on in my practice of it)! Two practices have helped me start living in the moment. First, I’ve had a basis of quiet, meditative prayer daily for a few years which laid the ground work of being still. Second, my recent COVID-time practice has been doing the dishes. It’s strange because this chore that I prefer to avoid has given me time to quiet my mind, to just be present to the current

moment. Now, it doesn’t have to be doing dishes for you. Maybe it’s mowing the lawn, folding laundry, gardening, or vacuuming. The only “requirement” is to be there and not in the future or the past. That’s it! There have just been two steps that have started me on the road to living in the present, and you know what? I’ve started to hear God’s still voice more often and more clearly as a result.
