Burlington is the principal city of the Burlington MSA which encompasses all of Alamance County (MSA population of approximately 150,000 in 2008). Burlington is a short drive to two major NC airports. Manufacturing is an important component of the local economy. LabCorp, one of the largest clinical laboratories in the world, has its headquarters and several testing facilities in Burlington. LabCorp is Alamance County’s largest employer, employing over 3,000 people ion the county.

Economy

In the heart of America’s best business state, a dynamic destination is coming into its own — an emerging “corridor” of commerce where two major Interstates 85 (north/south) and 40 (east/west) link two of the fastest growing and most talked-about metro areas on the East Coast. At one end, the Research Triangle Park Region of

Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill; at the other, the Piedmont Triad Region of Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point. Alamance County is the centerpiece of this Carolina Corridor, where the full resources of the region come together to create exceptional opportunities for expanding and relocating companies.

Transportation

Alamance County has two major Interstates: 85 (N/S) and 40 (E/W) that run concurrently through the county linking Alamance County to major destinations. Interstates 95 and 77 are approximately 90 miles away. The modern,

deep-water ports of Wilmington, Morehead City and Charleston provide shipping service to Alamance County along with two inland ports located in neighboring Greensboro and Charlotte. North Carolina is the hub of an East Coast rail network with 3,600 miles of track throughout the state. Norfolk Southern Railway and Amtrak provide service to Alamance County. Alamance County is served by two commercial airports within a 45 minute drive. Piedmont Triad International Airport has 61 daily flights. Raleigh Durham International Airport has 270 daily flights. Daily Non-stop flights service over 40 locations including

London and Toronto. Air Cargo service is provided by 10 air cargo carriers. Piedmont Triad International is the site of a new FedEx Mid-Atlantic sorting hub which opened in 2009. Burlington-Alamance Regional Airport (BUY) offers a lighted runway with ILS, FBO, Rental Car and Hangars. The runway is currently being extended to 6400’ and will be able to handle plans as large as 737’s.

Education

Alamance County is home to over forty schools

including public, charter, and private educating

almost 25,000 students. Alamance County is

also the home to Elon University, a nationally

ranked four year liberal arts college and Alamance

Community College (ACC). Elon has 49 majors

including masters-level education for its nearly

5,000 full-time students. ACC has 46 programs

of study offering a variety of certificates and

associates degrees for its 4,400 full-time students.

Alamance has 22 universities and 10 community

colleges within an hour’s drive including numerous prominent schools such as Duke University and UNC. There

are a total of 140,700 full-time university students and 53,700 community college students in the area.

Healthcare

Alamance Regional Medical Center, part of Cone

Health System, provides excellent healthcare with

238 beds and 1500 employees in facilities located

throughout Alamance County. Recently the center

was named one of the nation’s best hospitals for

treating heart attacks. Regionally, there are 20

hospitals in a 45 minute drive including the world

renowned Duke University Medical Center and

Wake Forest/Baptist Medical Center. In all, there

are over 8600 hospital beds in the area.
