About the BSOP

The Burwell School of Photography was founded in Edmonton in 2007 by Paul Burwell with the goal of providing unparalleled photography education. Paul is an award winning professional photographer and contributing editor to Outdoor Photography Canada Magazine. He recognized the need for hands-on, professionally taught photography courses that were available in the Edmonton area. Our classes consistently receive rave reviews and we encourage students to sign up early as we regularly sell out certain classes. Over the years we have expanded our course offerings and instructors and we are pleased to offer our largest ever selection of classes and workshops for the Winter/Spring 2014 session.

Our classes and workshops are for everyone from the absolute beginner, aspiring amateur or even the seasoned professional. We strive to provide an experiential, down to earth learning environment with world class photographer instructors. Our instructors haven’t just taken a class on teaching photography, rather they are seasoned, recognized professionals making a living from photography who have a passion for sharing their experience with their students.

Photography is ultimately about vision. Our instructors will teach you both the technical and creative skills to develop your own style and vision of photography. Our classes and workshops feature a combination of classroom theory combined with a very healthy dose of hands-on learning.

Digital Camera Fundamentals

Instructor: Paul Burwell

This class is the foundation for most of our other classes. This is the class that will help you master your digital camera (with manual controls and interchangeable lenses) so that you can get the camera off of automatic mode and start using one of the manual modes to start making the photographs you want to make instead of the photos the camera decides for you. Digital Camera Fundamentals fully explores the topics of exposure modes, aperture settings, shutter speeds, the when, where and why of ISO, metering modes, proper exposures (photos that aren’t too dark or bright), autofocus, electronic flash, white balance and equipment choice considerations.

This class is not for the student who wants to sit for 12 hours listening to an instructor talk but rather for the student who wants a class with a great mixture of theory in addition to ample hands-on practice on their own camera. Digital Camera Fundamentals is our most popular class, so register soon-we’re often sold out months in advance!

Lightroom for Photographers

Instructor: Paul Burwell

We strongly believe that Adobe’s Lightroom software should form the basis of all of our student’s photography management and editing software. This software was created from the ground up by and for photographers.

During this class we will teach you how to import your photos, sort the good from the bad and reduce the clutter, make them so that you can find them again in the future. And when we are done with that we’ll teach you how to develop your photos so that they look their absolute best.

This class will teach students how to take advantage of the incredible power of this easy-to-use software. Most photographers can do everything they will ever need to do to most photos entirely within Adobe Lightroom. The price of this class includes a textbook.

Adobe has recently announced a “photographer’s subscription” that bundles both the current version of Lightroom and Photoshop CC for $10 USD/month.

Photoshop CC for

Lightroom Users

Instructor: Paul Burwell

Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud) is the de facto standard application for photography manipulation software. This class presumes that you use Adobe’s Lightroom software to manage your photographs and that you’ll be using Photoshop to do the sort of editing tasks that simply cannot be performed within Lightroom itself.

This course will teach you how to harness the power of Photoshop CC to accomplish tasks like cropping and resizing, fixing common problems, compositing, pro sharpening techniques, mastering content-aware changes, portrait retouching, Photoshop special effects and getting prints that match your monitor.

Adobe has recently announced a “photographer’s subscription” that bundles both the current version of Lightroom and Photoshop CC for $10 USD/month.
