Crime Scene investigation
This class focuses on crime scene investigation, evidence collection and documentation, the key components of any criminal investigation. This course will teach students the importance of properly processing a scene and preparing cases for court. The course includes instruction on the legal considerations of a crime scene search, including approaching the scene, sketching, photographing, latent print processing, identification and evidence collection and preservation. It will also include instruction on the collection of DNA, digital and firearms evidence. Students who attend this course will process a mock crime scene at HFSC’s Crime Scene House, providing them a unique opportunity to receive hands-on instruction and practical application of evidence collection, case review and other topics covered in the course.

Domingo Villarreal is the Technical Training Director for the Houston Forensic Science Center. Mr. Villarreal has nearly 30 years of forensic experience. He graduated from the Police Academy in 1986 and has a degree from the University of Houston. He also has graduated from the Law Enforcement
Management Institute of Texas and the FBI’s National Academy. Mr. Villarreal has been an instructor for the U. S. Department of Justice, and assisted laboratories in numerous countries
meet ISO/IEC 17020 accreditation standards. Mr. Villarreal has successfully developed and managed a program that trained experts to teach law enforcement personnel about courtroom testimony, analysis and processing of crime scenes, latent print development, friction ridge skin comparison and palm print identification. His courses have been taught in Colombia, Paraguay, Mexico and other Latin American countries. Mr. Villarreal is a certified lead assessor of the ISO/IEC 17020 and 17025 standards. Mr. Villarreal is a member of the Board of
Directors of the International Association for Identification (IAI.) He has also served as the chairman of the IAI’s Crime Scene
Certification Board.

Dr. Tammy S. Barette is a training specialist with the Houston Forensic Science Center. Dr. Barette is a Forensic Anthropologist and has more than 15 years of experience in human skeletal
identification and recovery of remains with associated evidence from crime scenes. She earned her MA and Ph.D. in biological and forensic anthropology from Ohio State University. Dr. Barette also has a law degree from the Ohio State School of
Law. She is a Certified Senior Crime Scene Analyst through the International Association for Identification (IAI). Dr. Barette served for 11 years as the coordinator of the forensic biology program at Keystone College in Pennsylvania. She has taught myriad forensic science courses, including photography and crime scene-related classes. Dr. Barette routinely presents at IAI and divisional IAI educational conferences. She is also a member of the IAI Science and Practice Subcommittee on Crime Scene Investigation and the Forensic Anthropology Committee of the IAI’s Florida Division.

Soraya McClung is the Houston Forensic Science
Center’s Scientific Training Director. Ms. McClung is
an international forensics trainer and former director
of the West Virginia State Police Forensic Laboratory.
She has served for four years on the Board of Directors
of the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors
(ASCLD). As chairwoman of the ASCLD International
Liaison Committee, Ms. McClung has worked with the
International Forensic Strategic Alliance (IFSA) and
its partners, Interpol and the UNODC, on developing
minimum standards for emerging forensic laboratories.
Ms. McClung is also a member of a U.S. Technical
Advisory Group to the American National Standards
Institute (ANSI) working on the development of an ISO
standard for the manufacturing of forensic consumables.
