ACTS 11:1-18 (NIV)

“The apostles and the believers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him and said, ‘You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.’ Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story: ‘I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. I saw something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to where I was. I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles and birds. Then I heard a voice telling me, “Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.” I replied, “Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.” The voice spoke from heaven a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again. Right then three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying. The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house. He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, “Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved.” As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said: “John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way? When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, ‘So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.’”

BRINGING IN THE LIGHT

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Easton McCall Suciu

CALL TO WORSHIP

L: Today we gather as God’s people, part of the greater family of faith around

the globe, to worship our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

P: We gather in the Spirit of Love which God gave as a gift to the world to be administered through the church.

L: We are called to live lives of love, devoted to serving God by serving those around us.

P: May God equip us and inspire us through our worship today to live this calling more fully as bearers of the banner of Jesus Christ in the world. Amen.

SPECIAL MUSIC “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” Traditional Jud Souers, soloist

Confession of the Christian Community

L: Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one true Church, apostolic and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare:

P: We believe in the one God, maker and ruler of all things, Father of all men, the source of all goodness and beauty, all truth and love.

We believe in Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, our teacher, example, and Redeemer, the Savior of the world.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, God present with us for guidance, for comfort, and for strength.

(5)

5

We believe in the forgiveness of sins, in the life of love and prayer, and in grace equal to every need.

We believe in the Word of God contained in the Old and New Testaments as the sufficient rule both of faith and of practice.

We believe in the Church as the fellowship for worship and for service of all who are united to the living Lord.

We believe in the kingdom of God as the divine rule in human society, and in the brotherhood of man under the fatherhood of God.

We believe in the final triumph of righteousness, and in the life everlasting.

(The Korean Creed, UMC, 1965)

L: Let us now pray together the prayer that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ taught us:

P: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

WORSHIP COMMITTEE OPENINGS

The Worship Committee is looking for a few more volunteers to assist with ensuring that the sanctuary is prepared for services. Our work is done “behind the scenes” as opposed to standing up in front of the congregation. Participation requires a minimal time commitment—normally just before the service you regularly attend. If this sounds like an interesting opportunity to serve your church, please contact Jim Anderson at (520) 870-6972 or oldsarge1706@live.com.

VIDEO CHURCH!

If you are finding yourself feeling a little squeezed at church today because of the crowds or if you just want to enjoy watching church on a big screen with a cup of coffee, please be aware that all church services are broadcast live in Souers Hall each week. Additionally, if you are traveling or are at your summer home or if you simply want to listen to part of the church service again, an audio and video copy of the weekly church service is available on the church website along with newsletters, bulletins, and other information. Please be aware that because of the need for editing, the audio/video of the church service is posted on the website a few days after church.
