University Prospectus

(4)

A Prospectus is a printed document that describes the main features of an institution (School or University) or commercial enterprise. In the case of a commercial venture it is legally mandated, and must comply with the strict legal requirements, and filed with the country’s securities inspectorate. A University Prospectus on the other hand is not legally mandated and does not require approval by the Country’s National Council or Commission for Higher Education. It must, however, provide needed information such as the mission, vision, objectives, raison d’être for the institution’s existence, programmes offered, costs for each programme, student life, accommodation and qualification of key university officers.

It is against this background that the Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) 2015 Prospectus is being presented and I hope it will provide you with the necessary information you need to know about Uganda Martyrs University. I hope you will on reading it decide on the institutions’ strengths and why your son/ daughter or relative should study at UMU and not any other institution. A Prospectus is a living document and will require updating fairly regularly. Allow me to conclude by thanking Mr. Emmy Rwomushana for spearheading the production of this Prospectus. Let us continue to lead the world in virtue and wisdom.

Prof. John Chrysostom Maviiri

Vice Chancellor

About Uganda Martyrs University

Background of the University

Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) is a faith-based private University owned by the Episcopal Conference of the Catholic Bishops of Uganda. UMU acknowledges the late Archbishop Kiwanuka as the Father of Catholic higher education in Uganda. When he first conceived the idea in the 1940’s, circumstances did not allow establishing a University at that time. However, this proposal was renewed during the 1980’s, and was endorsed by the Uganda Episcopal Conference in 1989. Uganda Martyrs University was officially launched in 1993 by His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni President of the Republic of Uganda. It received its civil Charter on 2nd April 2005. Uganda Martyrs University is located along the Equator at Nkozi, 80 km west of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. Opened in October 1993 with 84 students and two academic departments, UMU currently has 7 Faculties, 1 Institute, 3 Schools, 3 Directorates; and about 5,000 students, of whom about 1,500 are full-time residents on campus. The remaining 2,500 and 1,000 participate in distance learning and part-time programmes respectively at the University campuses in Kabale, Kampala, Masaka, Mbale and Lira.

Vision, Mission, Objectives, and Values

The University is committed to its vision, which is: “to be a university that is nationally and internationally recognized for excellence in research and the advancement of knowledge.” Basing on its slogan, “Making a Difference,” the University members and alumni are encouraged to make a positive contribution to society wherever they are. The Mission of the University is ‘to provide quality higher education, training and research for the betterment of society guided by ethical values.’

School of Postgraduate Studies

The School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) at Uganda Martyrs University is mandated to coordinate and manage graduate and postgraduate programmes. The SPGS runs the Doctoral programmes at the University. In liaison with the Higher Degrees Committee, the SPGS tracks the progress of all MPhil and PhD candidates through graduate seminars, research methodology workshops and progress panels. The SPGS also organizes the oral defense of Doctoral thesis. The SPGS receives application forms and forwards them to the respective Faculties offering the courses applied for scrutiny and recommendation on who to invite to the Graduate Admission Test (GAT).

After the GAT results are released, the Faculties advise the SPGS on the suitable number of candidates that may be admitted per Faculty and per course. The SPGS then prepares the final list and admits the qualifying students.

The SPGS coordinates the preparation of joint timetable by the Faculties for jointly organized core postgraduate courses such as research methodology, computer literacy, consultancy skills, communication skills and others. The SPGS works with the Higher Degrees Committee and various Faculties to put in place measures to ensure and promote quality in Graduate and Postgraduate programmes.

The Archbishop Kiwanuka Memorial Library

A Library is at the heart of any educational institution. At UMU, the Library is the hub of our learning process. Apart from the books and journals traditionally associated with a library, it is equipped with internet linked computers to assist the learning process.

Enquiry Services

The Library has a number of dedicated and trained staff members who can help answer any enquiries that you may have on any aspect of the library services.

The Library has branch libraries at all the University’s established campuses i.e. at Nkozi, Rubaga, Nsambya, Mbale, Masaka, Kabale and Ngetta University campuses. It liaises closely with libraries of our affiliate institutions close to the campuses to supplement on the information resources available to the students for example, the Uganda Catholic Social Training Centre Library at Rubaga, and Nsambya Hospital Training School in Kampala.

Other Connections

The Library Services also draw from resources available in other libraries both inside and outside the country to enable students to have access to a wide range of information.

By holding institutional memberships with some of these libraries and accessing their document delivery services, we make available documents that are otherwise not accessible through the UMU library system.

Directorate of Outreach

Organized community outreach at Uganda Martyrs University started as a community social services arm of the Equator Valley Farm (EVF) in 1999, with a purpose of contributing to community development through facilitating capacity of maize farmers within a short radius of the University.

The farm management felt a social responsibility to develop together with the surrounding community by starting an education program targeting farmers in the sub-county community. An agricultural outreach service program was initiated focusing on teaching improved agricultural practices to farmers, as well as equipping the community with knowledge in food utilization.

With support from a Belgian NGO known as TRIAS, EVF expanded the scope of outreach, both geographically and thematically - to cover 3 sub-counties of Buwama, Kintuuntu, and Nkozi - educating farmers on improved agricultural practices and nutrition. The community nutrition project is one of the most effective activities that the University has ever impressed in the three sub-counties. To date, many people within the community are still referring to EVF and the outreach field office at Kayabwe as MUKUZA, - relating to one of the famous nutritious foods for the infants which the disadvantaged mothers used to obtain from the farm.

The Quality Assurance Directorate

Preamble

The Quality Assurance (QA) Unit at UMU was established in 2008 with two part-time staff. One was acting QA Coordinator and the other as an Administrator/Editor. The QA Unit acquired office space in 2009 and was equipped with some desirable office equipment. In 2010, the QA Unit obtained a Directorate status and two new full-time staff were employed to run the Directorate. They included a Director and an Administrator. At the moment, the QA Directorate has a full time Quality Assurance Officer and two Administrators.

In all this we cannot forget one of the objects of UMU as stated in its Charter, namely that research must be done for the “betterment of life in Uganda in particular as well as elsewhere.”

Role and Responsibilities of the RD

The roles and responsibilities of the RD shall include the following:

• Spearheading the generation of the research agenda of the university • Organising seminars, workshops and conferences
