DEALING WITH CARD COMPROMISE

Target’s recent card compromise was a startling reminder of how dedicated hackers and skimmers are to achieving their goals. It also created a wave of activity nationwide for nearly all financial institutions.

Although the largest of the year, Target’s compromise was not the first. Gulf Credit Union attempts to spot compromises as early as possible on our own, but also receives information through our card processor when a compromise is discovered.

Compromises occur daily in locations ranging from small mom and pop shops to the biggest retailers in the nation. This may occur at the terminal where you swipe your card, when the information is transmitted from a retailer to their payment processor, or later taken from a server where information was stored.

Target’s compromise came at an unfortunate time for all parties involved; the holidays, specifically just before Christmas. Our number of affected cards was higher than usual and required action to protect Gulf Credit Union and our members. We also recognized the need for our members to have access to their funds throughout Christmas and the New Year. We delayed closing suspected compromised cards or mailing letters, and extended our time frame for action. The decision was successful. We avoided significant losses while maintaining member access to funds when needed most.

MEMBERS’ ACCESS TO CREDIT UNION DOCUMENTS

According to Section 91.315 of the Texas Administrative Code, upon request members of Gulf Credit Union are

entitled to review or receive a copy of the most recent version of the following credit union documents: balance

sheet and income statement, a summary of the most recent annual audit, written board policy regarding access

to the articles of incorporation, bylaws, rules, guidelines, board policies and copies thereof, and Internal Revenue

When Gulf Credit Union becomes aware of a card compromise, we send a letter explaining the situation and offer multiple methods to obtain a new card along with a date the affected card will be closed. Our next step is sending a follow-up letter that includes card ordering options and a final reminder that the card will soon be closed. We normally provide 15 business days from receipt of the first letter to respond with your selection to obtain a new card.

Most residents know that June 1 is the beginning of hurricane season. It can be a stressful time for many, which is why it’s important to plan ahead as much as possible. We all know it’s important to know the evacuation routes, and to have a list of needed supplies, as well as medications and important documents.
