Making history isn’t easy . Making 140 years worth is downright impressive . And that’s why at Saint Joseph we didn’t just set out to build another hospital, we set out to make tomorrow’s history today . All of our leadership, expertise and history of delivering leading-edge, patient-centered care will remain in the heart of Denver when Saint Joseph Hospital opens its new facility on December 13, 2014, at 1375 E . 19th Avenue & Downing Street, just across from the current campus .
Saint Joseph Hospital will be the newest hospital in metropolitan Denver . The Baby Place will offer families a hotel-like atmosphere with the latest technology and amenities available . You will be cared for by our skilled nurses, midwives, and physicians in a comfortable and caring environment . When you deliver your baby with us, we will treat you like a member of our family . Most parents have only a few pregnancies and childbirth experiences in their lifetime . Let us help prepare you for the birth experience you are dreaming of . Studies have shown that families that take prenatal classes report a higher level of confidence with bringing their new baby home, greater breastfeeding success and dealing with emergencies .
Our classes are designed to meet

Prenatal Education
Registration Information
Education Programs
The education programs at The Center for Lactation and Education are developed to help you and your family make choices about childbearing, parenting and personal health . Unless otherwise noted, classes are held at Saint Joseph Hospital .
Early Registration
Prepared childbirth classes and prenatal education classes fill quickly . We recommend that you register several months in advance to reserve your place in these classes . Please plan ahead and select class dates that will be completed at least one month before your due date .
Class Registration
Registration is required for all classes . You may register online at saintjosephdenver.org, or by calling with credit card payment . Please call our office at 303-812-4640 with any questions about classes .
Class Confirmation
Once we have received your registration and payment, your space in the class is reserved . We will email you a confirma-tion letter listing the class date, time, what to bring, and direc-tions to the classroom on the Saint Joseph Hospital campus .
Cancellation Policy
We understand that circumstances may arise that require you to cancel . If you cancel your registration up to five business days before class begins, your registration fee will be refunded . No refunds will be given after this time.
We are unable to transfer registration fees to another class should you miss your scheduled class .
We regret that in rare instances, classes may be cancelled if we do not reach a minimum number of registrations . A full refund will be given if we must cancel your class .
Childcare
Babies may attend classes with you where noted in the class description . Otherwise, we ask you to make other childcare arrangements .
Inclement Weather
In case of inclement weather, you will receive an email or you may call The Center for Lactation and Education at 303-812-4640 one hour before class start time for cancellation information .

Prenatal Yoga
Nurture yourself and your growing baby through gentle Hatha yoga . Learn basic breathing techniques and yoga poses that are especially beneficial during pregnancy . Guided relaxation and visualization exercises encourage an open-minded, positive approach to pregnancy and birth . The instructor is certified in prenatal yoga . Please bring a mat, pillow and blanket to class .
Cost: $60 for 6-week session, or $12 per class for individual classes

Marvelous Multiples
Just found out you’re going to have twins, triplets or more? Get prepared for the uniqueness of pregnancy, birth and life ahead . Meet other families who are also experiencing the joys and challenges of expecting multiples . Practice healthy pregnancy choices through sound nutrition, rest and stress-management techniques .
Learn about the physical and emotional challenges of a multiples pregnancy . Get prepared for the many variations in birth through your knowledge and confidence in the multiple birth process . Gain practical skills and problem-solving information about life at home with newborn multiples . It is best to take this class by 20 weeks gestation, although you are welcome at any time during your pregnancy .
Cost: $70 per couple
When to take this class: Anytime during pregnancy, but best before 20 weeks gestation

Breastfeeding multiples is unique . This class is designed to teach you the special strategies that will make breastfeeding your twins or triplets successful .
Information covered includes how breast milk is produced; benefits, myths, techniques of feeding;feeding cues; positioning; and pumping . Breast pumps, bras and other product information will be reviewed, as well as strategies for those first weeks at home .
Cost: $35 per couple

Wondering how well you will manage labor? Confidence begins here! Our childbirth preparation courses will provide you with accurate information as you prepare for labor and birth . Let our certified childbirth instructors teach you about the labor process, coping and breathing techniques and the latest about epidurals, medication and interventions . You will also learn about strategies for partners, Cesarean birth and hospital procedures . Learn how to manage the pain of labor and become empowered with knowledge and skills for birth .

A private class can be arranged to meet your individual needs . This class will be tailored to fit you, whether this is your first or subsequent pregnancy . A certified childbirth instructor can meet with you for a 21/2-hour session focusing on your

Childbirth Preparation —
eClass
This method of preparing for childbirth might be a good fit if you prefer to learn at your own pace, have been placed on bed rest, or if your work/travel schedules prevent you from committing to a traditional class . This self-paced course is a mix of self-study using web-based content and videos .
Here’s how eClass works:
1. Register for the course . You will receive your personal access code to eClass. This website provides easy-to- understand explanations with graphics and videos to teach you about the process of birth .
2. View the website at your own pace . The helpful graphics and short video clips scattered throughout the course, as well as the assessments, will help you feel confident about birth .
3. Attend a Practicing Labor Skills session (this is optional and can be arranged when you register for your eClass or after you have completed the course) .
Computer requirements for this class include an Internet connection and Microsoft Explorer 6 or above . Cost: $70
When to take this class: You should complete your home-study prior to attending the Practicing Labor Skills session or at least three weeks before your baby is due .

Everyone knows that labor is hard work! In this session, a certified childbirth instructor will teach you how to use positioning, relaxation, breathing and distraction techniques . The class is an opportunity to:
• Practice skills after completing Childbirth Preparation eClass. • Refresh your skills from a previous birth .
We recommend you take Practicing Labor Skills after completing Weekend Express, eClass, or as a refresher course .

Join other children three to seven years of age as we share story time at the “camp” and take an “expedition” around the hospital . This class will help your child feel comfortable in the hospital setting . Parents remain with their child during this class . Each child receives a fun safari “treasure .”

Never changed a diaper? Given a baby a bath? This class will help you prepare for those first weeks at home . Content includes cord and circumcision care, taking temperatures, recognizing signs of illness, crying and comfort techniques, as well as newborn procedures in the hospital .

Boot Camp for New Dads
This workshop is a MUST for all first-time
dads!
Boot Camp for New Dads is a one-session workshop and is led by men for men . In this session, you will be oriented to the unique aspects of new fatherhood by the experts — new fathers and their two- to four-month-old babies . Topics include: gatekeeper phenomenon; troubleshooter’s guide to crying babies; dad’s toolbox; caring for new moms; birth and bonding; what to expect postpartum; working/ family balance; your role as protector . You will have the opportunity to hold and care for real babies who are two to four months old! This class should be taken during the last trimester of the pregnancy .

Baby’s First Ride Program
Have you thought about installing your baby’s car seat? It is important that it be done correctly to keep your baby safe . Unfortunately, 80 to 90 percent of car seats are installed incorrectly!
Baby’s First Ride is a free service offered to all families giving birth at our hospital . After the birth, Mom, Dad or another support person can call the Baby’s First Ride reservation line at 303-866-8222 to make an appointment (appointments are also available during your pregnancy) . The car seat and installation will be checked by a certified child passenger safety technician before you and your baby are discharged . You must have your car seat installed in your car before you leave the hospital with your baby . The technician will teach you the proper way to install and use the car seat so that your baby will be safe starting with the very first ride!
Baby Makes Three
Most couples quickly discover that the arrival of their bundle of joy can create a bundle of stress on their relationship . Reports of less fun, less sex and more arguments can frighten those unaware of practical ways to negotiate and better communicate after the baby arrives . This class is a fun way to learn and nurture your relationship while preparing for parenthood . This class is held at Good Samaritan Medical Center. The Baby Place
Hospital Admission
During your pregnancy, please obtain instructions from your healthcare provider so you understand exactly what to do when it’s time to come to the hospital . (If you think you are in labor, call your provider, who may ask you to come to the hospital to be monitored .)
When packing for your stay at the hospital, we suggest you pack personal toiletries, gowns, robe, slippers, bra, baby’s going home clothes and mother’s going home clothes . The hospital cannot accept responsibility for valuables such as jewelry, credit cards, cash or personal belongings, so please leave these items at home .
Your Birth Experience
At Saint Joseph Hospital we want to support your individual birth preferences . Our facility offers labor triage rooms, LDR birthing suites, delivery rooms equipped for Cesarean deliveries, and recovery rooms . Discuss your ideas early in your pregnancy as your healthcare provider may offer direction and guidance specifically for you . Once you are well informed, you are better able to decide among the services we offer for the birth of your baby .

The Starting Place (OB Triage Center) is designed to accommodate you and your labor support person during early labor examinations while your labor is being evaluated . We suggest that other family members and visitors remain at home to be notified once labor is confirmed .
The Starting Place is a unit consisting of four evaluation rooms and a labor lounge, where you can watch television or listen to relaxing music as you walk or sit on a birthing ball for com-fort between labor assessments .
The Starting Place is staffed by Certified Nurse Midwives . Whether you go to The Starting Place or directly to The Baby Place, you will be asked a series of admission/prenatal questions pertinent to your care . If your journey begins in The Starting Place, your labor evaluation may last from two to four hours . If there are complications or when labor progresses, you will be transferred to The Baby Place .
The Baby Place
Many women choose to have their babies in a birthing suite because it has a comfortable feel, similar to a bedroom at home . The cozy room has a birthing bed that converts to a delivery bed for the birth . Most suites have whirlpool tubs . The birthing suite is also called the LDR because this is where you labor, deliver and spend your two- to three-hour recovery period . Although the room is comfortable, emergency care is available immediately if complications arise for either mother or baby .
Saint Joseph Hospital is a teaching hospital and, therefore, you may have nursing students, medical students and resident physicians involved in your care . This is to ensure high-quality training for healthcare providers of the future . One of our highly skilled labor nurses and your own physician or certified nurse midwife will also be involved in your care .
The Baby Place
We encourage you to have a labor support partner (baby’s father or another close friend or relative) with you during labor and birth . The guidelines for other visitors in Labor and Delivery may vary based on your individual situation and needs . Our goal is to protect your privacy and to provide you and your baby with a safe environment . Children may be with you in the LDR; however, an adult other than the labor partner must accompany the child . One adult of your choice may accompany you for a Cesarean delivery and will be given sterile, disposable clothes to wear .
Some families want to bring a camera or video recorder . If you wish to video record special moments in the birthing room, please bear in mind the need to obtain permission from physicians, nurses or staff you may want to include . When your baby is born, the nurse will examine the baby’s condition . To nurture the attachment between you and your baby during the period immediately after birth, we encour-age you to participate in our Baby’s First Hour program, as long as mother and baby are doing well . During this time we promote skin to skin contact with your baby for up to one hour or until the first breastfeeding is complete . Skin to skin contact provides warmth, bonding and improves breast-feeding success . You will place your naked newborn tummy down on your bare chest . Fathers or significant others are encouraged to participate as well .
Identification bands will be placed on your wrist and your baby’s wrist and ankle . A fourth identification band is avail-able and can be placed on the wrist of the baby’s father (or other support person) if you desire . You will be asked to sign a permit for this person to wear the band, as the band allows access to the baby in the nursery . The identification bands provide security for you and your baby . Your baby will also be footprinted .
The Women’s Place
Mother/Baby
Once you are both ready, you will be moved with your baby to the Mother/Baby Unit . A team of nurses cares for both of you during the remainder of your hospital stay . The rooms on the Mother/Baby Unit are private, as family-centered care is our goal . Each room has a day bed . This provides an opportunity for mother, baby, and dad or partner to stay together . Each of the postpartum rooms has a private bath, shower, telephone, television and DVD player .
While you and your baby are with us, we encourage your family to stay with you as much as possible and to become involved in baby’s care . Children who are sick or running a fever are asked not to visit, so that your new baby can stay healthy .
Visitors must wash their hands before handling the baby . Please be aware of your need for rest and limit visits accordingly . To help you get the rest that you need we encourage you to take part in the unit’s Quiet Time . During Quiet Time the staff will limit interruptions to only those that are medically necessary to allow you time to sleep, relax and bond with your baby . Encourage visitors to avoid this time if possible . Quiet Time occurs from 1 to 4 a .m . and 2 to 4 p .m . daily . If you wish to have privacy while nursing, suggest that your visitors go to the cafeteria . You may ask your nurse to place a sign on your door if you are sleeping or don’t want to be disturbed by visitors . There may be occasions when it is necessary for your nurse to interrupt your phone calls or visitors to care for you or your baby, and we will attempt to keep these interruptions brief .
Mother/Baby Care — when the nurse cares for both you and your baby in your room (rooming-in) — is designed to encourage togetherness and bonding, teach you baby-care skills, and support you in these first important days after birth . Mother/Baby Care involves having the baby in your room 24 hours a day . It fosters a closer relationship between the two of you, allows you more opportunity to become familiar and comfortable with your baby, and enhances the care we can provide for both of you . We believe all family members benefit from early contact with the newborn baby, and we encourage as much time as possible with your infant .

Mother/Baby
Your baby will stay in your room during your hospital stay . Your baby will be taken to the nursery briefly at night to be weighed and have a hearing screening test . Research has shown that babies who spend the night in their mothers’ hospital rooms sleep better, awaken less, and cry for shorter periods of time . The same research shows that mothers who have 24-hour rooming-in get the same amount of sleep as the mothers whose babies spend the night in the nursery . When babies are born between 35 and 37 weeks gesta-tion they require special care with feeding and temperature control . The nurses, lactation specialists and physicians will help you learn their unique needs .
Your newborn’s picture will be taken, and you will be offered an opportunity to purchase a variety of portrait packages, including portrait birth announcements and online birth an-nouncements . In addition, you will have the opportunity to develop a web page for your baby’s photo . Only friends or family members designated by you can view the photos on your web page .
Going Home
An average stay following a vaginal birth is one to two days and two to three days following a Cesarean delivery . Your discharge time is coordinated with your healthcare provider and keeping your needs in mind . Please make arrangements for transportation prior to your day of discharge . Follow-up home care by nurses is available . Please check with your healthcare provider for recommendations . Your baby’s car seat must be installed in the car before you leave the hospital . For help with installation of your car seat, make an appointment with Baby’s First Ride (see page 14 for more information) .
Antepartum Services
Antepartum means “before birth” . Our Antepartum Unit specializes in the care of high-risk mothers, and is dedicated to the care of women and their families . During the course of your pregnancy, there may be circumstances that would require you to be admitted to the hospital for special, individualized care in our Antepartum Unit . Your doctor will decide if it is necessary to more closely monitor you or your baby and to identify risk factors to treat complications . During your stay, you will be monitored and managed by your OB provider . If necessary, the Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians will provide consultation and co-management of your high-risk pregnancy with your OB Provider . Our nurses are specially trained and experienced in caring for women who have high-risk pregnancies . You may stay on our Antepartum Unit until delivery, or you may be discharged and asked to return as needed, depending on the circumstances . It is our commitment to provide a soothing and comfortable environment so you can relax and be reassured that you are receiving the best care for you and your baby .

Why Should I Choose to Breastfeed?
While you are pregnant, you comfort, protect and nourish your baby. Breastfeeding is a wonderful way to continue this care after your baby is born.Making the choice to breast or formula feed is not just a matter of personal preference. There are important differences between breast milk and formula that you should be aware of.
Breast milk provides the best possible food for your baby because it is more easily digested and protects against allergies and illnesses, like painful ear infections, and pneumonia.
Breastfed babies have lower risks for SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome/Crib Death), obesity, diabetes and cancer.
Breastfed babies get milk that’s perfect for them — fewer tummy aches and less diarrhea or constipation. They get so much holding and cuddling, it is no wonder moms and babies love it! The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for at least one year and exclusive breastfeeding until infants are six months old.
You may also be surprised to know that women who breastfeed usually lose their pregnancy weight more quickly and that they have a lower incidence of breast and ovarian cancers.
Breastfeeding has another advantage — it is inexpensive. The cost to breastfeed your baby is less than half the cost of formula feeding.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center
At the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center, caring and tech-nology go hand in hand . Our focus is the subspecialty of high-risk obstetrics, also called Maternal-Fetal Medicine or Perinatology . A high-risk pregnancy occurs when there are medical complications affecting either the mother or baby during pregnancy or birth . Our high-risk mothers and their unborn babies are cared for in a warm, relaxing and friendly atmosphere . The health and well-being of our new parents and growing families is our primary concern .You will most likely be referred to the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center by your OB provider for consultations based on the specific circumstances of your pregnancy . We will co-manage your pregnancy with your OB provider if a medical complication or problem should develop with you or your baby . The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center provides a comprehensive range of both outpatient and inpatient consultation services including care for maternal medical complications, fetal abnormalities, ultrasound services, diagnostic procedures, genetic and preconception counsel-ing and prenatal screencounsel-ing testcounsel-ing . We also offer diagnostic procedures such as chorionic villus sampling, amniocente-sis, and others as needed if problems develop during your pregnancy . Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
(NICU)
Your baby deserves the best care possible, and that is what Saint Joseph Hospital provides . Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is located near the Mother/Baby Unit and consists of 30 private rooms . The security of having their baby nearby is comforting to parents whose baby needs special care . Here, premature babies and critically ill newborns receive the highest level of care from specially trained physicians and registered nurses .
The hospital is staffed around the clock with neonatologists who are pediatricians with three additional years of training in newborn pediatrics .They have expertise in complica-tions and providing specialized medical care for newborns . In addition to neonatologists, special care is provided by neonatal nurse practitioners who are on duty 24 hours a day . These practitioners are registered nurses who have addition-al education and experience in the care of sick newborns as well as ongoing care of newborns .
Families are encouraged to take an active part in caring for their infant . Sometimes a mother is medically ready to leave the hospital, but her baby needs additional care . Families of these infants can stay in one of our guest rooms at The Parent Place for a limited number of days at no charge, based on availability . This allows the parents to be close to their infant at all times .
Parents are encouraged to call and visit . Parents, grandpar-ents and close friends may visit as long as they are free from illness . Siblings who are healthy and supervised may visit, although no other children may visit . Parents are welcome in the NICU 24 hours a day, and are encouraged to participate in their infant’s care .

Family members and guests may purchase a meal using the same room service menu as the patient. Guests can purchase a voucher in the hospital cafeteria. The guest may then place their order through the room service telephone number .

To ensure that all patients, visitors and employees are provided with the safest possible environment, and to reinforce the fact that smoking is a significant health risk, Saint Joseph Hospital is a smoke-free campus . We have established these smoking restrictions for the wellbeing of your baby .

During the Baby Business class, you will fill out information for your baby’s birth certificate as well as apply for a Social Security number for your baby . The birth certificate is an important permanent legal document that will be used by your child throughout life . It is helpful for parents to decide on a name, and the spelling of the name, prior to our requesting this information for the birth certificate . If changes or corrections have to be made after discharge at the Office of the State Registrar, there will be a fee . Later changes may require a court order .
While you are in the hospital, you will be given information on how to obtain a legal copy of your baby’s birth certificate . Hospitals cannot provide these certificates .
Paternity Information
A paternity form is offered to unmarried couples . This form is free of charge if it is completed at the hospital before discharge . This form requires a witness . If friends or family are not available to witness it, hospital staff may witness as long as the father has a current photo ID . A paternity form can be completed at a later date through the state office, and there is a fee for this service .

While you are in the hospital, if you have any questions or concerns about your care that cannot be answered by the nurse caring for you, please ask to speak to the manager . You may also ask to speak with the director or nursing supervisor by calling the hospital operator .
