UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM AND DEGREE COMMITTEE Twelfth Meeting, 2013-2014 Academic Year

Martha Adler, Jennifer Zhao, Jason Liu, Keshav Verde, Karen Thomas-Brown, John Fink, Adnan Shaout, Janice Lewis-Boyd, Elaine Logan, Laura Reynolds, , Mitch Sollenberger, and Cam Amin, Deb Peffer Absent: Roma Heaney, Bradley Pischea, Margaret Rathouz , Alice Xie (alternates with Jason Liu) March 31, 2014 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm IAVS Building (Room 2004)

AGENDA

1. CALL TO ORDER AND ADOPTION OF AGENDA: Meeting called to order at 3:01 pm; the agenda was adopted.

2. CORRECTION AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES

2.1 Minutes of March 17, 2014 Meeting (Attachment): March 17 meeting minutes were approved.

3. ANNOUNCEMENTS

3.1 General Education (Attachment): Thefirst Gen Ed Transition Committee meeting was today, March 31st; the committee approved four courses; one course was sent back; Mitch and Laura conducted the first of three Gen Ed work sessions on March 25 for faculty on how to fill out the electronic forms and to assist with questions regarding Gen Ed.

3.2 Certificate Approval Process (Attachment): formal approval is needed for new certificate programs or certificate programs with a curricular change; existing certificate programs with no curricular change can be submitted directly to UCDC; existing certificate programs need to be approved by September 30th; the process for approval should not be time consuming for existing programs— should include student advising work, curriculum self-study, and program data (the more materials submitted the better); all certificate programs need to ultimately be reviewed by HLC.

4. SUBCOMMITTEE AND OTHER REPORTS

4.1 Graduate Subcommittee: Grad Sub had a discussion on what happens with student academic grievances when unresolved within the unit; the process should be the same for Grad and UG students; we will put this on the agenda for the next UCDC meeting.

4.2 Assessment Subcommittee: the Assessment committee is working on an annual assessment template; the template is in its 4th revision; the template will be integrated into Canvas.

4.3 Online Matters: At the last UCDC meeting, the committee was asked to take the onlinedefinitions back to their units—what did people have to report? CASL recommended the definitions; Council of Deans did not have any concerns either; who holds copyright for an online course? SPG—copyright policy says the course belongs to the university but they give it back to the faculty person who developed the online course; the policy only addresses intellectual property. 5. UNFINISHED BUSINESS

5.1 Campus Policy on the Management of Cross-Listed Courses (Attachment): changes were made to the wording on the policy—little tweaks; suggestion from CASL: allow multiple units to be owners if the course(s) are jointly developed; if you have some kind of agreement you should have some kind of joint responsibility; there should be a MOU for a joint discipline developed— possibly make it a signature line on the course approval; changes to the policy: 1) remove CEHHS from the second paragraph 2) remove items 3 & 4 and keep 1&2 3)maybe add a foot note for those units who do not have disciplines; (Note: Engineering does not have to do anything for existing courses) Mitch will bring back the policy to the UCDC committee after the language is cleaned up. 5.2 Course Delivery Methods: Online, Hybrid, and Face-to-Face Definitions

(Attachment): Feedback from the UCDC committee: CASL is fine with definitions; CEHHS is fine; Engineering is fine; (NOTE: HPS 475 approved for effective term can’t do retro approval—effective term 2014); motion to approve; all in favor; approved.
