Introduction

The Papers of Gilbert James contains _{52 cubic feet of materials which include} biographical (1915-1985), proceedings (1972-1978), correspondence (1949-1980), subject files (1942-1980), literary productions (1954-1979), clippings (1955-1979), printed materials (1947-1981), and photographic materials (1975, Not Dated). All materials are unrestricted.

Processing of this collection occurred between January-August of 2006. The finding aid was prepared in August, 2006. Both were compiled by Jamie Thigpen.

Includes correspondence, papers, student records and other records relating to the Urban Ministries Program for Seminarians (UMPS) at Asbury Theological Seminary; magazine articles on various topics; outlines of lectures given at various meetings and conferences; and papers relating to various urban training programs.

Includes student papers and records and other records relating to the Urban Ministries Program for Seminarians (UMPS) at Asbury Theological Seminary. Also included are various news clippings and classroom notebooks.

Includes research materials and data from projects for the Free Methodist Church of North America and the police department of Racine, Wisconsin.

Content

The Papers of Gilbert James consist mainly of documents from 1915-1985, the bulk of which dates between the mid-1950’s and the mid-1970’s.

literary productions, clippings, printed materials, and photographic materials. Series are arranged alphabetically and are as true to Dr. James’ own method of organization as possible.

The largest sections are the subject files and literary productions. Dr. James clearly collected information on a myriad of topics, most of which relate ultimately to urban church ministry. The James collection is a hotbed of information on the Civil Rights Movement and its relation to the Church.

Includes birth certificates, preaching certificates, and posthumous mentions in printed materials, as well as notes made during his bout with Alzheimer’s. PROCEEDINGS

Includes faculty notes made by Dr. James during his tenure at Asbury Theological Seminary.

Arranged alphabetically.

Includes business and personal letters from associates, friends, and family of Dr. James and of his wife, Esther.
