February Speaker Bio and Abstract

Dr. Sylvia A. Flack is the Executive Director and Founder of the Center of Excellence for the Elimination of Health Disparities (CEEHD). She is the founding Dean of the School of Health Sciences/Professor of Nursing at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). In 2005-2006 Dr. Flack served as Special Assistant to the Chancellor. Under her leadership the outreach RN-BSN programs, the physical therapy and occupational therapy pro-grams as well as the masters in nursing program and many initiatives were developed. Dr. Flack founded the Community Family Practice and Wellness Center, an academic primary care facility located in the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem’s public housing and family services. The SOHS used this center to implement the immersion method and successfully taught students about health disparities and how to improve minority health. For ten years the residents were given care by students and faculty from the School of Health Sciences and the Social Science Department at WSSU. Dr. Flack

contin-ues her work with nursing schools through consulting and through the National Strategy Alliance. This Alliance founded by Dr. Flack has a membership of 45 historically black, predominantly black, Hispanic serving and major nursing programs. The purpose of this organization is to build environments for nursing students’ success.

Although her research has been in the areas of the medically underserved, health disparities, HIV/AIDS, elderly mi-norities and breast cancer, her greatest contribution to research has been building infrastructures for communities and faculty to accomplish research and intervention outcomes. In 2006 Dr. Flack, founded the WSSU Center of Ex-cellence for the Elimination of Health Disparities. By 2007, she had received an NIH National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities Center grant. Thirty researchers from the university were able to conduct disparities research in HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, hypertension, e-health, diabetes, and patient centeredness. In 2004 while serving as Dean and again in 2009 she developed and led Faces of a Healthy Future: National Conference to End

Health Disparities I & II, two of the nation’s largest conferences on health disparities. In 2010 Dr. Flack was selected

to lead the NC Health Equity Collaborative an organization consisting of all North Carolina health disparities centers in colleges and universities as well as community organizations. She has served as a scientific reviewer for the Unit-ed States Department of Education, NIH, National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities, NC HHS, DoD Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) and Susan G. Komen. Dr. Flack has been instrumen-tal in securing multi-million dollars through research and training grants, new programs, scholarships, and cooper-ate and privcooper-ate fundraising. In 2014 she was selected to serve as a member of the Southeastern Health Equity Council, National Partnership from Health and Human Services.

She serves on many communities, state, national boards and commissions in healthcare, public education, higher education and civic organizations. She consults nationally with colleges and universities on educational programs and also has served as a SACS visitor. Past and current community boards include the Downtown Plaza, the Pied-mont Triad Sickle and Health Services Advisory Board, The E-Girls, Forsyth County Health Department Infant Mor-tality Coalition and the Health Equity Action Team, Leadership Winston-Salem Board, HealthCare Access, Board of Directors and the Quality Improvement Committee of Center Point Human Services, Crisis Control Ministry Board and the Mid-Atlantic Affiliate of the American Heart Association.

Dr. Flack holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from WSSU, a Master of Science in Nursing from the Medical Col-lege of Georgia and Doctorate in Educational Administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Universi-ty. Among her many awards and honors she is most thankful for the 2008 Leadership in Health Disparities Award from NIH and 2010 induction into the Legacy Club of the Missionary Council for the CME Church. Her most cher-ished award came from the WSSU Nursing Alumni Chapter in 2005 when they named her “Most Distingucher-ished Alumni”.

Gail Webster to serve out remainder of Tim Ballard’s Councilor Term

Tim Ballard (En-Cas Laboratories) has provided notice that he will not be filling out the remainder of his term as section Councilor. The local section is grateful for the many years that Tim has served as Councilor. At the Executive Committee Meeting on January 31, 2015, the committee appointed Gail Webster (Guilford College) to fill out the remainder of Tim’s term. Gail will be wearing two hats for the Central NC Section as she is also the head of the Women’s Chemist Committee. We wish Gail well in her new position.

Chemistry Olympiad is Coming

Dr. Bakarr Kanu (WSSU), Olympiad Committee Chairman, has announced the registration and test dates for the Chemistry Olympiad. A letter of invitation and participation with details on the Chemistry Olympiad can be found on page 4.

Subject: NC Academy of Science meeting March 28 2015 at Biotech Place WS NC

I have taken on the responsibilities to host the North Carolina Academy of Sciences Annual Meeting, to be held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, March 27-28, 2015. The meeting will be at Wake Forest Biotech Place, which is at the Innovation Quarter, www.wakeforestinnovationquarter.com/<http://www.wakeforestinnovationquarter.com/> . I am contacting you be-cause Our Local Arrangements Committee recommended that we reach out to SYNGENTA to provide an agricultural science and commercialization angle to the sessions. In addition, we are particularly interested in showcasing how chemistry can be utilized in the agri-business enterprise. The annual meeting is comprised of a series of one-hour "workshops" and lectures in the early (2:00-3:00) and late (4:30-5:30) afternoon Saturday March 28th. Your talk would be one of four concurrent ses-sions. The registrants would select which session they want to attend as they register, so we would be able to tell you the size of the audience as registration continues. Would you be willing and able to dedicate some time toward this during the after-noon of March 28th 2015?

DETAILS: The North Carolina Academy of Science meeting has a theme, determined by the host, and this year it is Innova-tion in Research. The membership is predominantly academic: faculty in most of the teaching-mission state instituInnova-tions as well as the private colleges and universities throughout the state. The attendees at the meeting include faculty in the scienc-es and undergraduate students who will be prscienc-esenting some of their undergraduate work. Attached is a synopsis of last year's meeting, to give you a flavor of the meeting. Because this would be at the level of general faculty and advanced under-graduate science majors who have done some research, this audience would be coming from all ends of the state, and you would be showcasing not only your company goals and accomplishments, but also the opportunities that a science major in the state might have in the workforce in this area.
