The historical roots of the “Collegio della Sapienza” date back to 1362, the year of its establishment, when by commission of the Pontifical Court, Cardinal Niccolò Capocci created the College with the aim of forming young leaders of the new Papal State after the Avignon exile.

The structure was built by the architect Matteo di Giovannello from Gubbio, known as Gattapone, and still today, houses precious works of extreme historical and artistic value, such as the Pozzo-Cisterna (Cisternal Well), a Chapel dedicated to San Gregorio (artistic fresco’s by the Giotto school) and the Theatre from the Goldonian era.

In September 1362 the cardinal dictated conditions for the hospitality of forty "wise men", Italian and foreign students of theology and law at the prestigious University of Perugia.

In 1902 La Sapienza was rented by the ONAOSI Foundation to welcome its guests then purchasing the building in 1936.
