Why Cable Glands?

Cable glands are the universal replacement for a condulet. They are used in every country in the world and will continue to be used more and more, even in the USA. Why?

– Cable glands offer superior corrosion resistance (up to IP68) over iron and aluminum condulets. Most outlast even PVC coated condulets.

– Smaller in size, installation versatility.

– Many glands offer cost and labor savings, especially with the price of conduit where it is today. Most OEM customers are already using cable and glands. Other customers such as automotive, pulp and paper, and pharmaceuticals are gravitating toward cable and glands. Chemical plants and refineries are also using glands for process and instrumentation areas.

– The IEC standard wiring method is with cable and glands – worldwide. IEC Electrical Sales are much larger globally than NEC.

What type of cable are you using?

SWA, GSWB, MC?

What is the outer diameter (od) of the cable?

*Remember that most of our cable glands are made in Europe,

and therefore are measured in millimeters (mm).

It is critical to correctly mate the cable gland with

appropriately sized cable.

We recommend that the cable od falls in the middle

(midpoint) of the published cable range for that particular

gland.

What Questions Do I Need to Ask the Customer in

Order to Sell Our Cable Glands?

(16)

16

1. What doesn’t the cable fit the gland?

– Many cable manufacturers’ tolerance does not actually match what their cut-sheets state. The solution is to make sure that the cable falls as close to the midpoint cable range that our gland will accept. That way, even if the cable is out of tolerance, it can be properly terminated in our glands.

2. Why are we not price competitive with Hawke or CMP?

– The majority of examples and applications we have seen are not comparing apples to apples. For example, our TMCX is not the correct cross reference to the Hawke 501/453/UNV (universal cable gland). In fact, our TAB1

Series is at a fraction of the cost of the TMCX cable gland. The reality is that we are very competitive with Hawke and CMP, and will continue to grow our business.

(17)

3. How do we differentiate ourselves from the

competition?

– Combining CAPRI, CEAG, CCH, and Peppers cable glands together, we offer the broadest line of cable glands in the industry.

– We have listened to our end-users and customers by providing an

accessory kit – simply add K1 to the part number and you will receive 5 parts in a bag vs. 5 separate parts to order with Hawke and CMP proving cost, labor, and transactional cost savings to our customers.

– Many of our stocked cable glands in Roanoke, VA include the accessory kit – K1.

4. I have heard that CMP has a triple rated cable gland?

– CCH and Hawke have taken an honest approach to the marketplace and offer both CSA and ATEX dual listings on a single fitting. CMP claims to have UL / CSA / ATEX triple ratings, however, after further review of the certificates published on their own Web site, their UL listing is only for NEMA 4X – NO hazardous area UL listings.

(18)

18

5. Does CCH offer all thread types?

– Yes we do. In selecting cable glands, we manufacture NPT, Metric, and PG threaded cable glands. We also have a full line of adapters from NPT to metric, metric to NPT, PG to metric, and so on.

6. What does NP (nickel-plated) brass do for the

customer?

– It provides a higher level of corrosion resistance than brass cable glands. From a pricing standpoint, it falls in the middle of brass and stainless

steel glands, so many customers will go this route. Nickel-plated brass may be confused with stainless steel from the aesthetic standpoint, so be careful with this.
