Higher-level tests

The higher-level tests evaluate your students'

command of the language covered in Oxford

Exchange through more challenging exercises

than those contained in the test booklet. You can

use them with a whole class where most students

are coping well with the Oxford Exchange

coursework, or to cater for more able students in

mixed-ability groups.

CD-ROM

The higher-level tests are also available on

CD-ROM so that you can copy the files onto

your computer and adapt them to suit the needs

of your students.

Diagnostic test

The diagnostic test can be used at the beginning

of the school year. It is designed to cover

language which students have already learnt in

Primary, and will give a good indication of the

level at which your students are beginning ESO.

The test should take about 40 minutes.

End-of-unit tests

There are ten end-of-unit tests designed to

follow the Student’s Book units, and each

of them should take 40 minutes to complete. The

tests all contain a Vocabulary section

(10 marks), and a Grammar section (20 marks),

followed by Reading and Writing (5 marks

each).

End-of-term and End-of-year tests

The end-of-term and end-of-year tests

should take about one hour and should be

administered at the end of each term. They

are divided into four sections: Vocabulary,

Grammar, Reading and Writing, and are

marked out of a total of 50.

End-of-term test 1 is designed to be used after

Unit 3, of-term test 2 after Unit 7, and

End-of-term test 3 after Unit 10.

The end-of-term tests are cumulative – that is,

End-of-term test 2 covers language from terms

one and two, while End-of-term test 3 covers

language from all three terms. You may want to

use End-of-term test 3 as a practice test in

preparation for the final End-of-year test.

Test summary sheet

There is a test summary sheet on page 5 of this

booklet, which can be used to keep a record of

students’ test results during the year.

Suggestions for using the tests

Warn students in advance that they will be

having a test and tell them what the test will

be covering.

Students need to develop procedures for

revision, so encourage them to look back

through their notebooks and to use the

Grammar and Vocabulary pages at the back

of the Student’s Book. You might also want

to discuss the amount of time students should

spend revising.

Before students begin a test, spend a few

minutes looking through it with the class and

make sure that everyone understands how to

do each type of activity.

Students may need extra paper to carry out

Iain is from Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. ‘My favourite festival is Hogmanay – that’s our New Year celebrations. Every year there’s an enormous party in the streets, with modern music and dancing. I go with my friends. My friends usually dance, but I prefer to watch. People don’t wear special costumes, but at twelve o’clock we watch the fireworks – they’re always fantastic – and we listen to the bagpipes. They always play traditional music then. I don’t usually go to bed until about five or six o’clock in the morning, but I get up very late on New Year’s Day.’

HANK _______________________ Hank’s favourite festival is Thanksgiving. ‘It’s an American festival. We celebrate it every year on the last Thursday in November. All my family have dinner at my house. We eat special food (turkey and pumpkin pie are the traditional foods, but I’m a vegetarian so I never eat the turkey!) and relax or play games. We usually watch American football on TV. There’s an important match every year and, of course, we don’t go to school.’

Ben: How far is it?

Sarah: It’s a long route. We’re walking over 1,000 kilometres!

Ben: And what’s the weather like? Sarah: It’s very, very cold. During the day

it’s often sunny and windy, too. Ben: Is that a problem?

Sarah: Well, we’re all wearing very warm clothes and sunglasses, so it’s OK. Ben: Of course, there aren’t any hotels in

the Arctic. Where do you sleep? Sarah: We’ve got special tents and sleeping

bags. We need them! The temperature is -35ºC at night. Ben: What other problems are there? Sarah: Well, there aren’t any shops so we’re

carrying all our food. My rucksack weighs about 50 kilos. That’s a lot. Also, there are some dangerous animals – polar bears are sometimes very aggressive. Apart from that, I’m having a fantastic time!

How are things with you? My new school is fantastic. As you know, it’s a special sports school and I’m having a great time here. I love it! We start at 8 o’clock, so I usually get up at 6.30! In the morning we have normal classes and in the afternoon we do different sports. The school has got three big gyms and there are two swimming pools, a lot of tennis courts and a sports centre with special areas for football and other sports. I can play volleyball and I’m good at hockey. I’m learning basketball, karate and tennis. There’s an important tennis competion in April so we’re preparing for that. I’m also in the swimming club and we have practice before school. I can swim 2 kilometres now, but I can’t run 10 kilometres. My teacher says I must train more, but I haven’t got any free time!

My favourite film is

A.I. (Artificial Intelligence).

In the film an inventor created an incredible boy robot, David. David is different from other robots because he can love. He lived with some human parents because their son was in hospital in a coma. Soon he didn’t want to be a robot any more because he loved his mother. Then the son recovered from the coma. When the son was home again he was cruel because he didn’t like his robot brother. The family abandoned David, but he travelled all over America and looked for the Blue Fairy for many years. The Blue Fairy helped him. In the end he discovered that his mother really loved him. He didn’t become human, but he was happy.

IN DECEMBER 1999 TWO FRIENDS, Andy and Mike, were on a small plane when they had an accident in the Andes mountains in Chile. They knew that to survive they had to cross the mountains. They had a map and some food, but they didn’t have a compass or a tent.

The weather was terrible – it was very cold and windy, there was a lot of snow and the temperature was often –10ºC. They put on all their clothes and they wore sunglasses to protect their eyes. They only travelled during the day. They walked in the direction of the sun. At night they looked for protection and made a fire. They didn’t meet any people, but they saw some animals in the distance.

After ten days they didn’t have any more food and they were exhausted, but they didn’t stop. Finally, after two more days they came to a road and soon they arrived in a small town. It was Christmas Day and their terrible experience was over!
