DAY 12: Ma hew 28:6 The tomb was empty. He has risen!

6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. DAY 1: Ma hew 21:1-11

Jesus rode to Jerusalem on a donkey.

21 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey ed, and a colt with her. Une them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord needs them,' and he will send them at once.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

5 “Say to the daughter of Zion, 'Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.”

6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. 8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shoung, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was srred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”

D

Jesus, the Word made flesh, had come to dwell among us. This obviously was going to bring quite a stir to the people of Jerusalem. Their long-awaited King was about to make His grand entrance into the city - not on a white stallion, as many would have envisioned, but on a donkey. Nevertheless, people crowded the road and celebrated His coming by waving palm branches and shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord.“ Jesus’ body lay in the tomb,

lifeless and dark. But on the third day, just as He had said, He came out of the tomb, never to die again. It was a miracle of God that had been planned before the beginning of time. Jesus became sin for us on the cross. He overcame sin and the grave when He walked out of the tomb! Glory be to God!

DAY 2: John 12:2-8

Mary poured perfume on Jesus' feet.

2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 “Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages.” 6 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

DAY 11: Ma hew 27:59-60

They covered Jesus' tomb with a great stone.

59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.

D D

A large stone covered the entrance to the tomb. What was going on inside the tomb would be hidden from human eyes. But God was about to do the unexpected! Jesus is worthy of

extravagant love. Mary was willing to give up something of great value just to anoint Jesus’ feet. This was no small act. This pure nard was very expensive. It cost Mary a great deal. Even when a disciple tried to correct her for being so wasteful, Jesus praised the act of worship. What does your worship cost you?

Only four days have passed since His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Yes, only four days ago the people were shouting "Hosanna!" and praising His coming. Four days later: the mood of the people has made a drastic change. The cheering crowds are gone. The religious leaders, feeling threatened by this "prophet from Galilee," have begun plotting to take Jesus' life. It is time to celebrate the Passover, and Jesus wanted to spend it with those who were closest to Him. It is the last meal that He will share with this group of friends.

Ma hew 27:3 J DAY 10: John 19:40 Jesus' body is prepared for burial.

40 Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.

DAY 3: Ma hew 26:17-19 The Last Supper

17 On the first day of the Fesval of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparaons for you to eat the Passover?”

18 He replied, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says: My appointed me is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.'” 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. D Ma hew 27:3 J

They took Him down from the cross; His poor, lifeless body, and prepared Him for burial. They placed Him in a borrowed tomb. (He wasn’t going to occupy it for long).

DAY 4: Ma hew 27:3

Judas betrays Jesus.

3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders.

DAY 9: John 19:28-30

They give Jesus a sponge soaked in vinegar to drink.

28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lied it to Jesus' lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

D John 19:40 J

On the cross, Jesus asked for a drink. His body was dehydrated from all of the blood and sweat. They gave Him a drink that would possibly help to ease His suffering. But, He refused because He was there to absorb the entire cup of God’s wrath. Then He said the most profound words. In Greek: Tetelestai, translated “It is finished” or “The debt is paid”.

Jesus’ worth is greater than diamonds or rubies. He is fairer than the lilies. Yet, a man who had followed Jesus throughout His earthly ministry betrayed Him for 30 pieces of silver. The King of kings was sold for a small amount. But don’t lose heart. Jesus CHOSE to lay down His life and He used the selfish act of one man to carry out his plan.

DAY 8: John 19:18,37 & John 20:25-29

Jesus was nailed to the cross. John 19:18,37

18 There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubng and believe.”

28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

John 20:25-29

25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

DAY 5: John 19:17

Jesus carries his cross to the site of the crucifixion.

17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). D John 19:17 J

Known as the “Via Dolorosa” (the way of suffering), the path that Jesus took to His crucifixion was a difficult physical struggle. Add in the jeering crowds, and it would have been heart- breaking struggle as well. He carried His own cross. He walked that road with the greatest of resolve. This was what He had come to do.

Never before in history had there been a more excruciating death. Never before had there been a more humiliating style of execution. The cross was reserved for the most despicable criminals. And it was upon the cross that Jesus became sin for us.

DAY 6: John 19:2-4 and Mark 15:17 Jesus crowned king of the Jews. John 19:2-4

2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.

4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.”

DAY 7: John 19:23 Soldiers divide up Jesus' clothes.

23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bo om.

Jesus lived a simple life on earth. He had nothing more than the clothes on His back. Even that was something that was taken from Him. They gambled for what was left of His clothing. However, Jesus wasn’t going to need them any longer. They gave Jesus a crown and

a robe. This was not a kingly crown. Instead, it was a crown of thorns. Every move of His brow, every

expression on His face, reminded Jesus that He had come to suffer for our sins. Little did they know that they had crowned the King of kings.
