2015-2016 Education, Culture and Employment Page 1 of 5 The Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) Right from the Start Early Childhood Development Framework and Action Plan has committed to increasing the number of qualified northern Early Childhood Development (ECD) professionals in licensed programs. Ten (10) $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to help full-time college and university students offset the costs of attending southern accredited post-secondary institutes in Diploma or Degree programs with a direct focus in Early Childhood Development studies.

The following information is required to apply for one of the ten $5,000 scholarships under the Right from The Start Early Childhood Development Scholarship Program for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Applicants must ensure the information is complete and accurate and the requirements of the program are met by the deadline.

DEADLINE

Applications must be received by 5:00 P.M. MDT on Tuesday, September 15th, 2015 to be

considered. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure all documents required under the application process are submitted and received prior to the deadline.

PART I - APPLICATION FORM

The following is the first step in the application process. Please ensure that you have all the information you will require to complete the application before beginning.

In addition to this Part I Application Form, there are other requirements that must be met for your application to be considered. In Part II, you will be given information on those requirements, and how to submit them. You are advised to review those requirements BEFORE you begin this application to ensure you are able to meet them by the deadlines specified above.

B. Academic Studies Information

Please specify the full name of the degree/diploma (Examples: Early Learning and Child Care Diploma, Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Development, etc.)

How many months will it last during this academic 2015-2016 school year? Please indicate starting and ending date.

Is your program full-time which means it meets the minimum requirement of at least 60% of a 100% full course load?

How many semesters or school years is this particular diploma or degree program in total?

What month and year do you intend to graduate from this program?

Do you want to pursue a career in the Northwest Territories when you have successfully completed your program? If yes, please indicate where in the NWT you would like to work. If no, please describe where you plan on living after graduation.

PART II - OTHER REQUIREMENTS

To complete your application, you must provide the following. Once you have assembled them, go on to Part III.

I. Letter of acceptance from a college or university detailing your studies in an Early Childhood Development focused Diploma or Degree program, specifying the date your studies are to begin, and the length of the program in which you are to be enrolled. A letter of conditional acceptance is also acceptable. Department of ECE staff may contact you after your program start date to confirm your attendance.

II. Proof of NWT residency (legible copy of your NWT Health Card, General Identification Card, Drivers License). Must submit copies of a minimum of 2 proofs of residency documents.

III. A copy of your transcript from the previous academic year (for students registered in a first year post-secondary program, please provide a copy of your Grade 12 high school transcript). You must have an overall passing grade.

IV. A letter of intent, approximately 400-800 words, which includes all of the following elements:

o your career plan and goals;

o why you chose the Early Childhood Development career you are pursuing;

o what you plan to do when you have finished your program, including where you expect to be employed;

career goals;

o why you should be chosen as a recipient of this $5,000 scholarship

V. Complete the following Declaration:

I also grant permission for the Department of Education, Culture and Employment to obtain transcripts from education institute(s). I understand that scholarships are awarded for use in the current academic year only. I further understand that if successful in my application, any tax implications or considerations will be my responsibility and that I must be in good financial standing with the GNWT to receive payment. I acknowledge that if I am a recipient of the Right from The Start Early Childhood Development Scholarship Program my name and image may be used to raise awareness of the Program and its objectives, and that I will be expected, if able, to participate in events to achieve these objectives.

It is your responsibility to ensure your documentation is received by the deadline. Once these documents are received you will receive by e-mail, at the e-mail address you provided in your on-line application, a confirmation of receipt.

Your application will be assessed based upon meeting all of the requirements as outlined in the application Part I and Part II.

Once the scholarship selection committee has made its decision and awarded the available scholarships, you will receive by e-mail its decision concerning your application.
