6. Raise quick height adjuster (S) to top notch and install

reel on mower.

7. Follow all steps for each remaining Turf Groomer to be

installed.

Figure 16 2.1 ADJUSTING PROCEDURE _________________________________________________________________________

1. Adjustments and maintenance should always be

per-formed by an qualified technician. If proper adjustment cannot be made, contact an authorized Jacobsen® Dealer.

2. Do not wear jewelry or loose fitting clothing when

adjusting or repairing any equipment.

3. Inspect the equipment on a regular basis; establish a

maintenance schedule and keep detailed records.

a. Keep the mower clean and moving parts properly

adjusted and lubricated.

b. Replace worn or damaged parts before operating the

machine.

c. Keep shields in place and all hardware securely

fastened.

4. Wash the equipment after each use. Do not wash any

portion of the equipment while it is hot. Do not spray water directly at bearing housings and seals. Do not use high pressure spray or steam.

5. Repair damaged metal surfaces and use touch up paint.

6. Use the illustrations in the Parts Catalog as reference for the disassembly and reassembly of components.

2.2 GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS ___________________________________________________________________

1. Initially, expect an increased amount of grass removal

when using the Turf Groomer. Also expect an increased amount of wear on the reel and bedknife; therefore, sharpening will be required more frequently. With contin-ued usage, however, the frequency of sharpening will decline.

2. Do not use the Turf Groomer immediately following top

dressing as the blades will pick up the top dressing and pass it through the reel. The groomer should be raised to its highest position and disengaged with the clutch knob.

3. Use the Turf Groomer on a regular basis, however, if you

wish to skip a day, the Turf Groomer should be disengaged. The groomer blades will simply roll on the ground without leaving any marks.

4. The Turf Groomer may also be raised to its highest level

but leave clutch knob engaged so that the blades will rotate though the grooves in the roller and keep the roller grooves clean.

2.3 HEIGHT OF CUT _________________________________________________________________________________

Before this attachment can be put into regular use, several passes should be made over a test area, each pass at a different setting to obtain the best possible results for your turf

conditioning needs.

1. Record the settings and conditions during the first test. Examine the test area a few days after the first grooming

AJ N AR AS AT AU S

WARNING

Before you clean, adjust, or repair this equipment, disengage all drives, lower cutting units to the ground, engage parking brake, stop engine, remove key from switch and disconnect Negative (BLACK) battery cable to prevent injuries.

CAUTION

Be careful to prevent entrapment of hands and fingers between moving and fixed components of the machine.

!

(8)

and record the results.

2. Your requirements will determine the final settings and

they will be governed by the type and condition of the grass, temperature and season of the year, the frequency of cut and many other variables.

3. Keep in mind that the conditions and settings will vary

from green to green and from one season to the next.

NOTE: Over grooming can cause severe damage to turf.

2.4 REEL HEIGHT OF CUT ____________________________________________________________________________

1. To set the cutting height for the reel, loosen the wing nut

(D) and thread screw (A) in or out to obtain the desired

height of cut (B) on gauge bar (C).

Use a small metal scale to measure dimension (B) as the height of cut. Once dimension (B) is obtained, tighten wing nut (D).

2. Loosen nuts (E) on both ends of the reel just enough to

allow knob (F) to raise or lower the roller brackets.

3. Place gauge bar across the front and rear rollers at one

end of the reel.

4. Slide the head of screw (A) over the bedknife and adjust

knob (F) to close the gap between the screw head and the bedknife.

5. Repeat adjustment on opposite end of reel.

6. Recheck both ends of reel for proper adjustment and

tighten nuts (E).

Figure 17 2.5 TURF GROOMER HEIGHT OF CUT ADJUSTMENT _____________________________________________________

1. The height of cut adjustment on the Turf Groomer is

made with the “Quick” and “Micro” adjusters and the gauge bar (C).

a. The “Quick” height adjusters (J) allows changes in

increments of 1/8 in. (3 mm) per detent position.

b. The “Micro” height adjusters (K) permits infinite

variations between the 1/8 in. increments. Each “click” of the micro adjuster moves the groomer shaft 0.007 in (0.18 mm) up or down.

2. The height of cut for the reel must be adjusted before the Turf Groomer height of cut can be set. If reel height of cut is changed, the groomer will need to be re-adjusted.

3. To set grooming height, loosen wing nut (G) and adjust

screw (H) from 0 to 1/16 in (2 mm) below reel height of cut (B).

4. Place the gauge bar across the front and rear rollers on

one end of the reel with head of screw (A) over the bedknife.

5. Unlock the “Quick” height adjuster (J) on one end of reel by turning knob 90° and bring the groomer blades down as close to screw (H) as the lowest detent allows. Lock adjuster.

6. Move “Quick” height adjuster on opposite end of reel to

same detent position.

7. Finish adjustment using “Micro” adjusters (K) on both

ends of reel.

8. Do not set the blades at ground level or below. To

mow at this level may damage the machine as well as the turf. The Turf Groomer was designed to be a conditioner, not a vertical mower.

9. Jacobsen does not recommend setting the groomer blades over 1/16 inch below the reel cutting height.

This height will also help eliminate natural graining and smooth out uneven grass

10. Make absolutely certain that each Turf Groomer is adjusted evenly on both ends and that all the cutting units on the mower are adjusted to the same height.

Figure 18 A B C D E F A B C G H J K 0-1/16 in.

(9)

2.6 CLUTCH KNOB (22” GROOMER ONLY) ______________________________________________________________ Note: The 18” groomer is not equipped with a clutch knob

and is designed to be always ON.

1. The Turf Groomer is equipped with a clutch to disengage

the groomer blades and allow you to cut grass with the reel only.

2. The groomer blades should be raised to their highest

position and the clutch knob disengaged when groomer is not in use.

3. To disengage the clutch, hold pulley (L) and turn clutch

knob (M) 110° counter-clockwise. Make sure the groomer is disengaged by manually turning pulley (L) and check if groomer blades turn.

Figure 19

2.7 BELT __________________________________________________________________________________________

1. The drive belt used on the Turf Groomer is a patented

design, Kevlar® cord, syncronus belt.

NOTE: To prevent permanent damage to the belt, do not overtighten, twist, fold or bend the belt.

Overtightening the belt will cause premature belt failure and abraisive wear of the pulley and bearings. Twisting or bending the belt will permanently damage the cord fibers of the belt.

2. Once the belt has been adjusted as described in the

assembly process, no further adjustment is required.

[See Section 1.7]

3. Periodic inspections of the belt will be required to check for wear.

4. Spare belts should be stored individually and not

compressed or bent into any form other than eliptical.

2.8 LUBRICATION ___________________________________________________________________________________ Lubrication intervals are based on operating from 8 to 10

hours per day, 5 days per week under normal operating conditions.

All maintenance intervals must be performed more frequently when operating in extremely dusty conditions.

1. Always clean the grease fitting before and after lubricat-ing.

2. Lubricate with grease that meets or exceeds NLGI Grade

2 specifications.

3. Apply grease with a manual grease gun and fill slowly

until pressure is felt. Do not use compressed air guns to prevent damage to seals.

Grease each of the following points not more than once a month.

a. Clutch (22” Groomer Only) (1 Fitting) (N)

b. Groomer bearing housings (2 Fittings) (O)

c. Roller bearings (2 Fittings) (P)

d. Micro Adjust Pivot (2 Fittings - See Note) (Q)

NOTE: To grease motor side micro-adjust pivot, remove grease fitting (Q) from micro-adjust pivot on opposite end of reel and plug (R). Install fitting and grease motor side pivot. Reinstall all parts to their original position. This is applicable to all units except for G-Plex.

4. For smooth operation of pivot points and other friction

points, apply several drops of SAE 30 wt. oil every 40 hours, or as required.

Clean and lubricate individual parts and components as required. Apply Lubriplate Multi-Lube compound between bearing housings and drive / driven assemblies.

Figure 20

WARNING

Never hold onto the reel blades during the engaging or disengaging operation. If it is necessary to stop the rotation of the reel, place a wood block between a reel blade and the frame.
