The Australian Government introduced streamlined visa processing (SVP) arrangements on 24th March 2012 for certain student visa applicants with a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for bachelor, master or doctoral degree courses at a participating university. Eligible applicants, regardless of their country of origin, are treated as though they are low risk (similar to the current AL1). If the applicant does not have a CoE, they will be processed under the pre-existing AL framework.
Kangan Institute is nominated as an education business partner under SVP by La Trobe University and Victoria University.
This package allows you to commence a diploma or advanced diploma at a TAFE and, on completion, transfer to university to complete your degree program. When you apply for a packaged program you will receive a student visa for the whole period of your study.
SVP applications are required to follow a separate process to that of applying for a stand-alone Kangan program, including the submission of a dual application form and further supporting documentation. Please contact the Kangan Institute International Services office prior to submitting an SVP application for further details.

General English courses extend students’ knowledge of English and increase their confidence in the ability to communicate in English. The program equally
emphasises the main skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Class texts are supplemented by authentic materials wherever possible. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is offered at upper-intermediate and advanced levels. EAP classes provide the language and study skills students need for tertiary study in Australia and classes include IELTS preparation.
YOu WILL LeArn
Our teaching methods focus on student-centred communication using innovative print and audio-visual resources. Students participate in whole class, individual, pair and small group work activities which offer the opportunity to practice communicating in English. Our teachers engage students with topics of interest. Our teachers strictly enforce an ‘English only to be spoken’ rule in the classroom to ensure all students maximise the opportunity to improve their language skills as quickly as possible.
Assessment AnD pLACement
Students are tested during orientation on their first day and are placed in a class according to the English language level demonstrated. Our class sizes vary from 10 to 18 students.
CLAss Assessment AnD prOgressIOn
Assessment includes teacher observation, class activities, assignment work,
class participation and tests. Students generally spend 10 weeks at each level. For example, a student who enters the program with an IELTS score of 4.5 would generally require 20 weeks of ELICOS to reach the equivalent of IELTS 5.5. Students who complete the upper intermediate or advanced levels receive direct entry into courses at Kangan Institute or our partner institutes. Please refer to individual courses for English language entry requirements.
Our teACHers
All classes are taught by fully qualified and highly experienced teachers with specialist qualifications in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) and who have experience in IELTS preparation and as IELTS examiners. Our teachers are native speakers of English and a number of our teachers have lived and taught in Europe, the Gulf, Asia and Latin America.
CLAss tImes
Classes are scheduled between 8.30am and 5pm and are delivered over five days per week. Students study for 20 hours of timetabled classes each week, either in the morning or afternoon depending on their level.
ADDItIOnAL ACtIvItIes
In addition to time-tabled classes, students can access our independent learning centre (ILC) and the computer laboratory (subject to advertised availability).
All classes are allocated time in the computer laboratory each week. As part of the students’ ELICOS program, we organise a range of educational excursions and activities to enable students to visit areas of interest as well as to socialise and to use their English in practical situations. The cost of these excursions is subsidised by the Institute. There are also a number of clubs organised by our staff that are fun and enjoyable outside of class time. Clubs include coffee and conversation, pronunciation, reading and writing, movies and conversation and supervised self-study.

Membership of one or more professional associations is highly recommended for students aspiring to become accounting professionals. While each accountant will ultimately make their own choice of professional body, we strongly recommend that our students become members of the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA). The IPA is fully supportive of accounting students, providing free student membership, excellent career advice, access to low-cost professional development and a range of resources to enable students to maintain updated industry knowledge. The IPA also provides an articulation pathway that enables a master’s degree to be obtained in 2.5 years in addition to the time taken to complete the Advanced Diploma of Accounting.
