MW FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK

AROUND THE MOUNTAIN WEST

• Heading into Week 3, the Mountain West has six undefeated teams, which only trails the SEC (10) and Big Ten (7) amongst the 10 FBS conferences.

Additionally, it is the most among the nonautonomous-5.

• Mountain West play begins Saturday when Air Force hosts Utah State (5:30 p.m.

MT on FS2) and San José State travels to Hawai‘i (6:30 p.m. HT on FS1). An Aggies victory on Saturday evening would give them a 3-0 mark for the first time since 1978.

• San José State, the defending Mountain West champions, will enter the 2021 Conference season riding an eight-game win streak, which is the fifth-longest active league win streak nationally. In 2020, the Spartans were 7-0 in MW play and haven’t lost a league contest Nov. 23, 2019.

• Through Week 2, Mountain West programs have registered three victories over autonomous-5 opponents (San Diego State def. Arizona, Utah State def.

Washington State and Nevada def. Cal). The three A5 victories are the most by a nonautonomous-5 conference this season.

• A Nevada victory on Saturday at Kansas State would give the Wolf Pack two autonomous-5 wins. The last time Nevada defeated a pair of A5 opponents in a single season was 2010.

• Fresno State RB Ronnie Rivers is the nation’s active FBS leader with 46 career touchdowns, setting the program career record on Saturday, Aug. 28. Rivers is six touchdowns shy of tying for fifth-most in Mountain West history, a spot currently held by San Diego State’s Rashaad Penny (2014-17).

• Nevada is coming off a victory at Cal (Sept. 4) and has now won three out of its last five games against autonomous-5 opponents. The Wolf Pack can improve that win figure on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Kansas State.

• New Mexico has opened the season with a 2-0 mark for the first time since 2005.

• Dating back to the 2019 season, the Mountain West has won 14 games against autonomous-5 opponents, including 12 against the Pac-12.

• In the past 17 years, the Mountain West has been the top nonautonomous 5 conference nine times and second five times.

• The Mountain West has been nationally-ranked in 21 of the last 28 College Football Playoff Rankings.

• The Mountain West produced the first non-automatic-qualifying FBS team into a BCS bowl game (Utah - 2005 Fiesta Bowl) and into the College Football Playoff (Boise State - 2014 Fiesta Bowl).

MOUNTAIN WEST COVID-19 CANCELLATION POLICY

The Mountain West 2021-22 COVID-19 Game Cancellation Policy applies to all MW-sponsored sports.

These provisions will continue to be reviewed by the MW Directors of Athletics and the MW Health & Safety Advisory Committee and will be adjusted should circumstances warrant.

• If a Mountain West contest cannot be played as scheduled due to a team’s inability to participate related to COVID-19 issues, the game shall be considered a forfeit for that team and will not be rescheduled.

• If both teams are unable to participate due to COVID-19 factors, the game shall be declared a “no contest”.

• There shall be no minimum roster thresholds for competition.

• Forfeited Mountain West games will be recorded as a loss for the team unable to compete, and as a win for the scheduled opponent, for the purposes of Conference standings, determining MW championship participants and MW championships seeding only. Per the NCAA, this does not change an institution’s official won-lost record.

Situations related to participation in MW championships will be addressed on a case-by-case basis within the context of this policy and applicable MW Handbook language. Tiebreaking and seeding procedures will be implemented consistent with these provisions and, if it becomes necessary, modified to utilize unbalanced formulas.

MW FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK

The Mountain West was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions — Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from a former 16-team conference re-established continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Three of the MW’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. TCU re-joined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. With conference realignment sweeping the nation in recent years, the MW has been proactive in addressing membership changes. Boise State University joined the Mountain West in 2011-12, followed by Fresno State and the University of Nevada on July 1, 2012. Also on July 1, 2012, the University of Hawai‘i became a football-only member of the Conference. On July 1, 2013, the Mountain West further expanded when San José State University and Utah State University joined the Conference, bringing to 11 the number of full-time member institu- tions and 12 football-playing members. On July 1, 2014, the Colorado College women’s soccer program became the first non-football affiliate member of the Mountain West, expanding that sport to 12 Conference participants.

When the Mountain West officially began operations on July 1, 1999, the new league had in place a seven-year contract with ESPN, giving the broadcast entity exclusive national television rights to MW football and men’s basketball, and three-year agreements to send the league’s football champion to the Lib- erty Bowl and a second team to the Las Vegas Bowl. Commissioner Thompson also arranged a third bowl tie-in each of the first three seasons (1999 Motor City, 2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans) before securing a four-year deal with the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco in 2002.

Entering the 2021 season, the MW has nine (9) postseason opportunities, including a spot in a New Year’s Six Bowl (highest ranked non-autonomous 5 champion), six (6) primary bowl positions with the Jimmy Kimmel Los Angeles Bowl, Arizona Bowl, Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, New Mexico Bowl, SoFi Hawai‘i Bowl and an ESPN Events-operated bowl, likely to be held in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex - and two (2) secondary positions.

An innovator in the postseason bowl structure, the MW engineered many

“firsts,” as league teams have participated in seven inaugural bowl games (2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans, 2002 San Francisco (Emerald), 2005 Poinsettia, 2006 New Mexico, 2015 Arizona, 2015 Cure), as well as placing the first non-automatic-qualifying FBS team into a BCS bowl game with Utah’s appearance in the 2005 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and into the College Football Playoff (CFP) with Boise State’s selection to the 2014 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
