OPEN CALL - Prototypes

IMPACT NEW STAGES

WITH THE SUPPORT OF ST’ART « Rayonnement Wallonie »

The Théâtre de Liège is launching a call for 5 grants of €10,000 in order to develop hybrid and online creative prototypes in the framework of IMPACT (International Meeting in Performing arts and Creative Technologies). Focused on performing and audio-visual arts, these concepts should be based on the idea of experiences to be created and lived remotely around three main topics: “the talking object: towards an Internet of emotions”; “F(r)ictions vs. Frictionless: Arts, Sciences and Technologies”; “Speculative Design: Probable futures / Desirable futures”.

The selected projects will be shown during a short performance (prototype, short form ...) and a virtual presentation in the framework of the 2021 edition of the IMPACT festival (from 7 to 22 November).

SENDING OF THE APPLICATIONS DEADLINE: 7 MAY 2021 – 23:59 GMT

- Resume of the project leader(s) - Project presentation file

- Envisioned technological developments - Provisional budget

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE SELECTED PROJECTS:

WEEK OF 17 MAY 2021

To be sent by email and by post:

IMPACT NEW STAGES

WITH THE SUPPORT OF ST’ART « Rayonnement Wallonie »

IMPACT New stages is a continuation of the IMPACT International Meeting in Performing Arts & Creative Technologies project that the Théâtre de Liège has carried out with cultural, academic and industrial partners in the framework of the INTERREG V Euregio Meuse-Rhine cooperation programme between 2016 and 2019.

IMPACT’s main goal was to set up a centre for cooperation, research and development, production and dissemination in the field of new technologies and the performing arts, at the crossroads of the economic, industrial, cultural and academic sectors; at the heart of what is today one of the sectors with the highest growth potential: the Cultural & Creative Industries.

In 2020, due to the health crisis, the Théâtre de Liège decided to redesign the IMPACT forum.

The forum was organized entirely online, with live streaming, immersive online experiences, and virtual panel discussions that allowed us to stay in touch with our audiences and to experience new formats.

This experience has opened up a range of possibilities that we intend to continue to explore and develop in the future.

IMPACT New stages, supported by ST’Art “Rayonnement Wallonie”, takes advantage of this experience to renew itself, in a profound and sustainable way, as a hybrid forum; physical and digital, in search of new formats, new audiences, new talents. The project will take place in November 2021 with the IMPACT New stages forum, organized in collaboration with the Cultuurcentrum Hasselt, and will be dedicated to performing arts, science and technology in a form that is both on-site (experiences designed to be lived in a venue, at the Théâtre de Liège and its partners) and online (experiences designed to be lived remotely). It will take place from 7 November to 5 December 2021: on-site at the Théâtre de Liège from 7 to 20 November - online in collaboration with Théâtre de Liège/ Cultuurcentrum Hasselt from 20 to 27 November 2021 - on-site at Cultuurcentrum Hasselt from 27 November to 4 December 2021.

CALL FOR PROJECTS

TYPES OF PROJECTS:

- The projects must be structured around a proposal for technological development within the context of an artistic work.

- The projects must integrate the notions of physical and digital hybridization, of presence and remoteness.

- The projects may be of different kinds: choreographic, theatrical, visual or musical creation, exhibition, scenography, application, etc.

- The projects may involve various technological developments (virtual reality, creative applications, interactivity and human/machine interface, sensors, visual or sound recording and broadcasting techniques, new materials and intelligent materials, 3D imaging, holography, etc.)

- The projects must clearly outline the innovative nature of the approach and research to be proposed and demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the area to be explored.

The projects will be a collaboration between one or more artists and researchers/business companies, preferably located in Wallonia. The need for skills must be described, the company does not necessarily have to be involved in the project, and the Théâtre de Liège can also play the role of facilitator in bringing the company into contact with the industrial sector.

THE FOLLOWING CAN PARTICIPATE:

All project leaders, natural or legal persons, are eligible, whatever their age, nationality and status: artist, director, choreographer, visual artist, musician, designer, engineer, researcher, entrepreneur, etc. in the fields of performing arts, visual arts and creative and cultural industries.

However, special attention will be given to artists, creators and companies from Wallonia.

(5)

The projects will be selected by an artistic and scientific committee consisting of representatives of the IMPACT Forum and external experts.

RELEVANCE Will be judged:

- The artistic or scientific excellence of the project - The innovative nature of the proposed research

- The quality of the collaboration between artists, scientists and technologists - The adequacy of the project to the standards and values of the partners

TOPIC

All topics are accepted but major attention will be given to the following topics:

- The talking object: towards an Internet of emotions

In the context of the emergence of the “Internet of Objects” and the new dynamic relations between human beings and machines, how can we conceive an Internet where emotions would be at the heart of the relationship and question, in a critical manner, the field of possibilities?

- F(r)ictions vs Frictionless : Arts, Sciences and Technologies

In this increasingly frictionless society, isn’t the role of art (and artists) ultimately to reintroduce friction?

- Speculative Design: Probable futures / Desirable futures

Transform the possible into the desirable through design fiction, or imagine tomorrow to better anticipate it (high-tech and low-tech, future and diverted uses of technologies ...)

FEASIBILITY AND QUALITY OF THE PARTNERSHIP

The prototype must be achievable within the budget defined by the call.

The feasibility of the project will be analyzed in consultation with experts in the fields concerned and the technological partners of the IMPACT project.

Furthermore, the projects must be adaptable to the constraints and context of the venue.

ECO-SUSTAINABILITY, GENDER AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY

Projects will also be analyzed in relation to eco-sustainability (environmental impact), gender and cultural diversity.

(6)

WHAT THE GRANT CAN BE USED FOR:

La bourse couvre :

- Ideation session at the beginning of the project (June 2021 – 2 days) - Coaching by a mentor

- The costs of designing and producing the prototype.

The grant is one and indivisible, it will be paid on presentation of an invoice and the costs incurred do not have to be justified

- The costs of on-site and virtual presentations within the framework of IMPACT (On Sunday 21 November 2021)

THE SELECTED PROJECT LEADERS COMMIT TO:

- Work in collaboration with the different teams that compose the partnership - Always keep the question of technological innovation in focus

- Document the evolution of their work

- Provide royalty-free pictures in order to illustrate their work in the overall communication of IMPACT

- Participate in possible workshops/open labs during the residency period (1 day) - Work in collaboration with a Walloon company that would be useful

to their research

- Wherever possible, to present their project at promotional events (press meeting, exhibition, symposium, conference, etc.)
