When Archbishop Lucas came to the Archdiocese he expressed a strong interest in spending many weekends in parishes with his people. His many duties have limited his ability to do this, but the desire remains.

The Archdiocese informed us that the Archbishop would not be available for Confirmation here in February 2020. We were given the option of moving it to a weeknight with the Archbishop, or keeping Confir- mation on a Sunday. My staff and I looked at the options with the large number of students, the structure of our program, and elected to keep it on Sunday.

Since Archbishop Lucas cannot be with us in 2020, he will appoint a delegate to administer the Sacrament. Going forward, the Archbishop will try to cele- brate Confirmation possibly every other year. This process is still being studied by the Chancery and I will keep you posted.

We are blessed with a strong, faith filled parish, a dynamic Archbishop and a thriving Archdiocese. Let us always pray for one another that the Holy Spirit hold court in our hearts. Have a blessed week!

God Is Not a Horse-Trader

We struggle because our image of God is too small. Our prayer is weakened by our diminished view of God. Sometimes we pray to a God of our own projection, someone we would like Him to be. In order to strip our- selves of false notions of God, perhaps we can say who His is not.

God is not a horse-trader. He is not a legal- ist. There is no contract where God rewards us if we jump through the right hoops. There is not a quid pro quo. No, we cannot earn God’s love for us—it is already there, a love for us beyond imaging. We must approach God like a child climbing onto His lap, seeking the em- brace and comfort of His welcoming arms.

God is not a grave-digger. He does not want to steal or bury our joy. He knows which joys lead to dissipation, emptiness, and de- pression. No, He wants us to live, and indeed, He wants to lead us to even greater happiness and peace. God desires that we go forth to live, and to plunge into His whirlwind of grace, gratitude, wonder, and expansive freedom.

God is not upstairs. He is here with us. He did not create the universe, wind it up like a watch, then step away and leave us to figure things out. He is not distant. No, God walks among us in His Son, Jesus (Emmanuel, God is with us). He is there with us for our morning cup of coffee, our commute to work, our strug- gle for patience, our joys, our tiredness, our weakness, our sleepless nights—He is there beside with us.

God is not hard-of-hearing. He might seem remote and not hear our prayers. We call out to Him and He seems silent. No, He remains as close as our breathing. He hears all our prayers and gathers them into His divine will for each of us.

God is not a wimp. He is not a pushover.

God is merciful but He wants us to stand up tall. In C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia, Aslan is not a tame lion. No, our God heals sinners, changes lives, and saves the hopeless. There is in God a wildness of beauty, an overflowing of life, and always the possibility of the unex- pected—there is always more.

We must be set free from our false images of God. Despite our fears, stubbornness, mis- placed zeal, or lethargy, He desires that we come to know Him as he really is: beauty and goodness incarnate, our best friend, our be- loved, He whom we adore.

Jesus is so full of surprises. This week, we can let his surprising ways interact with our daily lives. All of us, in some ways, tend to want to trap - or at least intensely resist - the prophets who call us to conversion. We are all asking our Lord to tell us what we need to do to have eternal life. We might all know the ways we don't like his answer. The invitation to love our neighbor, the way the lowly Samaritan did, can be a reveal- ing question for us this week. Who is the neighbor or stranger or enemy whom I'm called to help, care for their wounds, and provide for their recovery? Or, we can reflect upon whether we are too busy, and not focused enough on what really matters - spending some time just listening to Jesus. Perhaps, we have some desire, need, struggle that we very much want to turn to the Lord with. This could be the week we ask, seek and knock - persistently and confi- dently. All week, we can ask for the grace to be “with” Jesus and to “gather” with him, perhaps especially alert to ways we are “against” Jesus or “scatter” in different things we do or attitudes we take.

All it takes for us busy people is a little focus. We will get into the habit of beginning each day by bringing our attention to these strong desires with practice. At first, it may work best to rely on a line from one of these Guides - letting it be our expression of what we need and returning to it consciously throughout the day.

With practice, we will grow in comfort with naming our own desires more precisely. For example, I might already be more like Mary than Martha. I might want to be asking our Lord, “Help me keep listening to you, Lord, throughout this day.” It may be that I haven't said the Rosary with devotion in years. This may be a week to rediscover that powerful prayer, a decade at time, throughout the day, reflecting much more deliberately on the traditional mysteries or the reflections of this week.

Every night, we can all express our thanks to the Lord for the faithful way we are being invited to a closer relationship, in the midst of our busy, daily lives.

40 Days for Life - From Wednesday, September 25th through Sunday, November 3rd you’re invited to join other Christians for 40 Days For Life, forty days of prayer and fast- ing for an end to abortion. This year, the Fall campaign will focus on the facility in Bellevue and the 2020 Spring cam- paign will focus on the facility in Omaha. You’re invited to stand and peacefully pray during a 40-day vigil at the abor- tion facility in Bellevue, The Abortion & Contraception Clinic of NE. 40 Days For Life is an internationally-organized, peaceful effort comprised of three components: prayer and fasting, peaceful vigils, and community outreach. Since the first co- ordinated campaign effort, 40 Days For Life reports 12,668 lives saved from abortion – that we know of – and the clos- ing of 73 abortion facilities. Nebraskans Embracing Life, for- merly Nebraskans United for Life, is mobilizing local efforts in the Omaha & Bellevue area for the tenth year. IXIM: SPIRIT OF SOLIDARITY MISSION IN GUATEMALA

Since 2004, parishioners from across the Archdiocese of Omaha have gone to our sister diocese in Huehuetenango, Guatemala to work alongside our sisters & broth- ers in Christ. Ixim missionaries build bridges of understanding & solidarity by learning about the lives & realities of those in Huehuetenango. Ixim missionaries have staffed medical clinics, taught lessons at local schools, applied fluoride treatments to chil- dren, assisted with gardening projects, painted parish & school buildings, helped implement clean water projects, & accompanied young women during their formation for religious life. Our 17th trip will be June 17th – June 28th 2020. Come hear more about our Archdiocesan mission & discern your call to service at an upcoming infor- mation meeting.
