1 Download contents

VMware image

The downloaded files include an executable VMware image in a split zip format with an installation of the Windows XP operating system.

The VMware image includes the entire ARIS PD&A installation including ARIS Business Architect, ARIS Business Publisher, ARIS Business Simulator, ARIS Business Server*, Microsoft SQL Express*

database and all the required tools.

Note

You need a Windows XP MSDN AA (Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance) license to run the image.

2 System requirements

Hardware recommendation

In order to work quickly with the VMware image, we recommend the following hardware:

CPU

Dual Core, 2 GHz Main memory 4 GB RAM Hard disk

20 GB free disk space

If you do not meet the recommended hardware requirements, you can find out how to adjust the existing VMware image accordingly in the appendix.

Tools

The VMware image is delivered in a zipped version. You first have to unzip this. To do so, use a compression tool capable of unpacking split zip files. For example, you can download 7-Zip at

http://www.7-zip.org.

To launch the unzipped VMware image, you need the VMware Player.

You can download it at http://www.vmware.com.

3 Installation and getting started

VMware Player installation

To launch the VMware image, you need the latest version of the VMware Player. You can download it at

http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ and then install it.

You can use the VMware Player free of charge. You simply have to register.

Download and extract the VMware image

To launch the VMware image with the VMware Player, you first have to download all zip files required for your package. Be sure you download all the zip files into the same folder.

After downloading, extract the content of the zip files to your hard disk using a compression tool. Always select the first zip-file (filename ending with .zip.001) to extract the archive.

Launch the VMware image Procedure

1. Launch the VMware Player.

2. Click on Open a Virtual Machine.

3. Go to the directory in which you extracted the VMware image.

4. Open the file ending with .vmx.

5 Dialog for creating a new identifier (UUID)

If the underlying hardware of the VMware image changes, it may be necessary to create a new UUID. If a corresponding dialog opens when you start the VMware image for the first time, click on OK.

6 VMware Tools

VMware Tools allow you, amongst other things, to use the clipboard between the underlying operating system (e.g. Windows Vista) and the operating system of the VMware image (Windows XP). VMware Tools launches automatically during the start of the image.

Licensing Windows XP

Once you have launched the VMware image for the first time, you have to perform the following procedure.

Procedure 1. Click Next

7 2. Accept The End User License Agreement

3. Customize your Windows XP region settings or click Next to skip.

4. Enter your name and organization.

5. Enter your Windows XP MSDN AA license key.

8 6. Enter the computer name if required (please ask your local

administrator) or keep the proposed name. Don’t enter a password for the Administrator account.

7. Set date and time or click Next to skip.

8. Keep “Typical settings” and click Next.

9. Enter the name of the workgroup or click Next to skip.

10. Finish the Setup.

Windows will restart and is ready to use.

Licensing ARIS products

After licensing the Windows XP operating system you need to license the ARIS products.

Procedure

1. Start the Virtual Machine and log on with User: Process Design or Administrator*

9 2. The Software AG PD&A Licensing Setup will start up automatically.

Click Next

3. Accept the license agreement

4. Copy and paste the licenses for ARIS Business Publisher and ARIS Business Server* you’ve got via email. Please make sure you entered the data correctly and without leading and ending spaces.

5. Click Install to start installation.

6. Confirm the service-start pop-up by clicking OK. Windows services will start and be configured to automatically start with the system.

7. Click Finish to exit setup. ARIS Business Publisher and ARIS Business Server* are now ready to use.

Note

You may repeat the setup at any time in order to update your license keys. Just run the setup again from the desktop panel (Community >

Licensing setup) or from My Documents > Setup.exe.

8. Start ARIS Business Architect 7.2. by clicking on the icon in the desktop panel.

9. A window will come up, asking you to enter the ARIS Business Architect license key. Copy and paste the key you’ve got via email and click Ok.

4 APPENDIX

Change the VMware image

VMware Player allows you to create and configure images.

It is, for example, possible to increase the memory made available to the VMware image to 2048 MB if the computer used has enough memory in total.

12 Description of the image

Network settings/Internet access

The virtual network card is directly connected to the physical network.

No proxy server is set up. The Internet Explorer is connected directly to the Internet.

MS SQL database administration*

You can launch the administration of the MS SQL database using SQL Server Management Studio Express (under Start > All programs >

Microsoft SQL Server 2005) User: sa

password: manage

13 ARIS Business Publisher administration

You can launch the administration of the ARIS Business Publisher by clicking on the icon “ARIS Business Publisher” in the desktop panel or pointing your Web-Browser to http://localhost:9090/businesspublisher.

The following background services will always run:

 ARIS Business Publisher Server

 ARIS Business Server*

 ARIS Service Enabling*

 SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS)*
