The Andaman & Nficobar group of Isflands (ANI) beflongfingttotthe unfiontterrfittory ofIndfiafissfittuattedfin tthe Bay of Bengafl bettween 6.75027778–13.68333333 N & 92.20000000–93.95000000E, consfisfing of 572 fisflands. There are 550fisflandsfintthe Andaman group and 22fintthe Nficobar group(www.andamans.gov.fin). Car Nficobar fis tthe nortthernmostt partt oftthe Nficobar Isflands bettweenLfittfle Andaman & Nancowry. Therefis nofinventtory orfinformafion exfisfing on tthe freshwatter fishes of Car NficobarIsfland.Ittfis knowntthatt mostt of tthe earflfiestt and recentt works on freshwatter fish documenttafion wereconductted onflyfintthe Andaman group offisflands(Day 1870; Annandafle & Hora 1925; Mukerjfi 1935; Herre 1939, 1940, 1941; Koumans 1940; Sen 1975; Sttarmühflner 1978; Taflwar 1990, Rao ett afl. 2000; Paflavafi & Davfidar 2009; Devfi 2010; Rajan & Sreeraj 2013, 2014a,b,c; Rajan ett afl. 2013; Kumar ett afl. 2016). The gobfifid fish genus Redfigobfius are wfidefly dfisttrfibutted fin tthe Indo-westt Pacfific, finhabfifing freshwatters and

esttuarfies whfich are cflose tto tthe sea (Larson 2010). Presenttfly, 12 specfies of Redfigobfius are known worfldwfide, of whfich R. bfikoflanus (Herre 1927)fis tthe mostt wfidespread specfies. From ANI,tthree specfies of Redfigobfius are reportted, vfiz. Redfigobfius ttambujon (Bfleeker, 1854), R. bafltteattus (Herre 1935), and R. bfikoflanus. Durfing an fichtthyoflogficafl survey of Car Nficobar

Isfland, tthe occurrence of Redfigobfius oyensfi, from a freshwatter sttream was observed, whfichfis reportted herefin as tthe new record tto tthe Nficobar Isflands, Indfia, andsubsequenttfly,tthe firsttreportt of afreshwatter fish from Car NficobarIsfland.

Underwatterfaunafl survey was conducttedfin a sttream flocatted att a dfisttance of 8km from a ttrfibafl vfiflflage caflfled Kfinmafi, Car NficobarIsflands(Ffig. 1). A sfingflefemafle Redfigobfius sp. was encounttered and a phottograph of tthesame wasttaken wfitth a Nfikon 130 watterresfisttantt camera. The specfimen was coflflectted usfing a hand nett, butttthecoflflecttedspecfimencoufld nott be broughtt tto tthe capfittafl, Portt Bflafir due tto flogfisfic dfificufltty. Generafl observafion ontthesttream habfittatt, flora, and tthe substtratte was notted. Dr. Heflen K. Larsonfrom Queensfland museum, Austtraflfia, whofis tthe firstt revfiser oftthe genus Redfigobfius,fidenfifiedtthe goby based on tthe phottographs.

Ffirstt dorsafl fin wfitth a dark bflottch on tthe postterfior edge; restt of tthe fin orangetto pafle yeflflow coflor; second dorsafl fin ttransflucentt, wfitth rows of goflden spotts. Co-occurrfing fishes were R. bfikoflanus, Sficyoptterus mficrocephaflus (Bfleeker, 1855), and acrusttacean, Macrobrachfium flar (Fabrficfius, 1798), whfichfis aflso tthe firstt documenttafion from Car NficobarIsflands, buttseemstto be acommon finhabfittantt oftthe hfiflfl-sttreams of NficobarIsflands. The sttream wascflear and had asmaflfl watterfaflflfintthe up -sttreams;tthesubsttratte andtthecattchmentt areacomprfised mafinfly of dead corafl bouflders(Image 2 A,B). The bottom of tthe sttream was charactterfized by corafl bouflders and bflack voflcanficrocks, devofid of any vegettafion exceptt pattches of fiflamenttous aflgae. The sttream ran tthrough a serfies of smaflfl poofls of 1-metter deptth, and flowedfintto a creek, eventtuaflfly drafinfingfintto tthe sea.

The ttype flocaflfitty of R. oyensfi (=Gobfius oyensfi, de Beaufortt, 1913) fis Ceram, Indonesfia, whfich fis approxfimattefly 4,287km from Car Nficobar Isfland. Presenttfly, R. oyensfi fis known from tthe Phfiflfippfines, Indonesfia, Mficronesfia, and knowntto be occasfionaflfly found atttthe base of watterfaflfls.Ittfis suggestted,tthatttthefir dfisttrfibufionfis pattchy and ttherefis aflack offinformafion on gflobafl popuflafion and abundance. As aresufltt,tthe IUCN Red Lfistt of Threattened Specfies cattegorfize R. oyensfi as Datta Deficfientt(Larson 2012). Dettafifled habfittatt finformafion from Mebuflfibuflfi Rfiver, FergussonIsfland, D’EnttrecastteauxIsfland Group, New Gufinea was descrfibed by Gerry Aflflenfin Larson (2010), wherefittfis menfioned
