Mayor’s message

The Gold Coast is a warm, connected community where

everyone belongs.

Our city is famous for its lifestyle – but its greatest assets are the countless volunteers who work tirelessly to benefit the community. Sports clubs, veterans groups and not-for-profits play a vital role ensuring our community grows more cohesive as our population continues to grow.

As your Mayor, it has been a real privilege to meet hundreds of these groups and learn more about their passion and contribution to our community and lifestyle.

It demonstrates incredible community pride and a generous spirit, which I firmly believe is second to none.

It’s very important to me that volunteers are nurtured, supported and encouraged to achieve even more in their chosen fields.

That’s why this Council is proud to have established a Community Development Officer (CDO) program within the Safe & Liveable Communities branch.

Dedicated City officers with experience in grant writing, networking and running events are now available to provide specialist advice to volunteers and worthwhile causes.

In the lead up to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games™ many thousands of locals will put up their hands to volunteer in some capacity. I encourage anyone with time or energy to get more involved in their community – the skills and friends you make today will help our city shine when we step on to the world stage.

This Community Guide is a valuable resource. I hope it is of use to those in need and an inspiration to those who want to help make our great city even better.

TOM TATE

MAYOR

Council

Council of the City of Gold Coast (Council) is the second largest local government in Australia – based on the Gold Coast’s estimated resident population of around 530,000.

Employing more than 3200 staff, Council provides a range of services, programs, activities and facilities for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Councillors and divisions

The Gold Coast currently has 14 Council divisions. Every four years residents in each division elect a Councillor to represent their community needs and directly elect the Mayor.

About this Guide

This Community Guide provides a directory of services offered across the Gold Coast.

There are three sections: A-Z Guide, which contains general listings; People with a Disability Guide and Seniors Guide, which reference specific listings in easy-to-find sections.

The Gold Coast Community Legal Centre & Advice Bureau Inc. is a non-profit community organisation that provides advice, assistance, information and referral to the entire Gold Coast community. This service is completely free of charge and not subject to any kind of means test.

Our organisation has come to be known simply as ‘The CAB’ over time and has now been servicing the Gold Coast community for more than 30 years. From very humble beginnings in a small space generously provided by the City of Gold Coast we have grown to one occupying modern, easily accessible premises and comprising of more than 25 volunteers, five solicitors and various support staff. All our staff and volunteers are dedicated to ensuring that the entire Gold Coast is serviced, from Yatala and Jacobs Well in the north to Coolangatta in the south and extending out to our hinterland suburbs in the west.

Apart from the community information provided by our dedicated volunteers, our legal services are in very heavy demand. For full information about these services please refer to our website, our facebook page, visit our office or ring our friendly volunteers on the front counter.

The Guide that you are now reading contains approximately 2400 entries and is regarded as the most accurate and up-to-date source of information about community organisations on the Gold Coast. Whilst we are able to ‘Google’ just about anything on the internet nowadays, at times some of the information on various web pages can be inaccurate or out of date or otherwise unreliable, unlike the information in the Guide.

Our thanks go to the City of Gold Coast for publishing the Guide and to all the representatives of organisations, clubs, etc. who contact us with new or updated details.

As well as this printed version, the Guide is also available on our website,

advicebureau.org.au, in an easy to navigate format. The web version is updated weekly so if you are updating your organisation’s details, please fill in the ‘listing request’ form on our website or notify us by post, email or fax of any changes.
