The research project INTUS: partners and objective

Title:

INTUS = Operationalisation of Environmental Accounting

Instruments through the use of Environmental Management Information Systems Objectives:Improvement of existing environmental accounting instruments

Better understanding on how to select the right EMA instrument

Efficient application of the instruments by the support of Environmental Management Information Systems (EMIS)

(4)

Case Study: Continental Temic Nürnberg

Company profile:

Continental Temic is part of Continental Automotive Systems (CAS) and has

production sites in 13 countries (more than 3000 employees in Germany). Main office is situated in Nürnberg. Products are electronic components for automotive safety systems (brakes, airbags, etc.)

Targets of the case study:

The company faces an increased demand for information on the use of

environmentally relevant materials

Input-Output-Balances,

Environmental Management

use of defined materials

such as lead in solder and VOC in adhesives

(5)

Initial Situation: Different and Inconsistent Data

Hazardous Substances Management hazardous substances database Waste Management Waste/residue database PPS Production Planning-System Corporate Accounting common data partial Integration

ERP

System

Input-Output Balancing in spread sheets with data from ERP

Business Applications:

Integrated software for business processes, ERP-system (SAP R/3) Environmental Management:

Input Output Balance work intense (manual queries to evaluate material consumption)

Separate software for management of waste and hazardous substances

Register for hazardous substances in spread sheets, quantitative

infor-mation in SAP R/3 Resulting Problems:

Input-Output-Balance to much effort and imprecise

(6)

Objective and Solution: Efficient Use of Existing ERP-data

Objective

Making data from ERP-System easily available for environmental management

Focus: consumption of environmentally relevant materials

Option: automatic input output balance

Solution

Classification of materials in SAP R/3 according to a developed scheme of an “Eco-Key”

Storage and administration of Eco Key data in SAP MM and SAP EH& S

Standardized and self defined queries with ABAP List Viewer

Long term: complete integration of data on hazardous substances

Results

standard queries

hazardous substances inventory

Input side of I/o balance (optional)

Other standard queries Self defined queries

Use of substances containing lead

Use of substances containing VOC

(9)

Challenges and Conclusions

Case study:

Technical solution rather easy to develop

Highest efforts for checking and completing master data

Implementation of SAP/EH+S was scheduled but not yet decided in the Temic group

Other projects to maintain compliance had a higher priority (especially IMDS in the automotive sector)

Project INTUS/ general:

ERP systems contain valuable useful information and data for environmental management purposes

Today the cost benefit ratio of such projects is still difficult to determine, development of software solutions in the environmental field is still often driven by regulations

In the future integrated solutions for environmental management in ERP systems will be provided
