TECHNOLOGY VISION & MISSION
Vision StatementWe believe that students have a critical need to be able to access information, manipulate data, synthesize concepts and then to express their ideas creatively to others using text, video and audio media. Through technology, one can virtually bring the world to the student, regardless of rural and/or cultural isolation, to provide a depth and wealth of approaches to instruction that can reach children of all learning
modalities. In doing so, the learner becomes the architect of their own knowledge acquisition and integration, using vast resources at their fingertips to bring personal meaning, perspective and expression to the knowledge they acquire.
We believe technology is also an administrative tool which can dramatically improve the management and assessment functions of education. As teachers increase their use of performance-based assessment as a tool to continuously improve student learning, the power of technology can allow easier tracking of student work and progress. This will enable teachers to guide learners to activities that address competencies the learner needs to work towards and ultimately increase student success.
We believe the changes in the workplace require students and citizens who, as life long learners, can take responsibility for their own learning. To achieve meaningful
educational reform requires adequate and appropriate infusion of technology to support an education system that will meet the demands of the 21st Century.
Mission Statement
In the Tolleson Union High School District the learning community will be technologically literate life-long learners.

The Tolleson Union High School District is committed to school improvement, high
achievement for all students and service to the local community. This Technology Plan is designed to address the District’s technology goals and focus our efforts in
connecting students and staff to education technologies and strategies which strengthen teaching, administration and learning.

NEEDS ASSESSMENT Student Learning Current Reality
In our current environment all classrooms have access to a computer. This computer is primarily used for communication and day-to-day teaching needs. Some classrooms utilize projection systems which are mounted in less than 20% of the classrooms. Other classrooms utilize a rolling projector. All Science classrooms have a mounted projector, interactive white board, and microscope camera as well as a document camera. Language Arts classroom utilize online curriculum and textbooks. Many Mathematics classrooms utilize a projection system and a Texas Instruments emulator.
Currently student literacy is accomplished in our inter-disciplinary labs through various disciplines. Language Arts, Social Science and Science teachers will utilize online databases as well as other web based technologies in these labs. The business departments also enlighten student literacy through Word Processing, Information Technology, Beginning Computer Programming, Beginning Web Page Publishing classes.
Technology based curriculum is being met and or delivered through online assignment submission via file share technology. Student knowledge recovery is being met through Read 180, Nova Net, ALEKS and System 44.
Parents are using our Parent portal to keep up with their student’s grades, attendance and discipline records. Schools are using School messenger to communicate with parents via telephone, text message and even email.
Currently TUHSD is lacking in many of the modern collaboration and communication tools.

The current technology used to support LEA administrators and their responsibilities is limited to Galileo, Genesis, e-mail, 2-way communications devices and surveillance video.
The technology in place to provide data regarding student achievement and teacher effectiveness is Galileo and Genesis, Read 180 and ALEKS labs.
Administrators promote and evaluate the effective use of technology by teachers through observations, evaluation both pre and post-evaluation conference,
School based administration has limited input to requested technology whereas district administration has the stronger role in deciding the types and quantity of technology that is available to the staff.

Preparation and Development Of Educators Current Reality
TUHSD places a high value on the use of technology in its classroom and professional development related to the integration of technology is paramount.
Over the life span of this technology plan TUHSD teacher and staff members will participate in a variety of learning experiences in a number of formats. To help each staff member become proficient in their area of expertise, TUHSD will develop a list of essential skills in the various technology tools available to all staff members. Based on the staff member’s position and assistance technology mentors, each person will develop a technology IEP (TIEP). Technology Tools change often therefore it is imperative that each staff member be aware of changes in Technology Tools and update their TIEP accordingly. Each TIEP will contain topic in the following areas:

As budgets shrink and classroom requirement increase, finding time to meet with staff for traditional style classes has become increasingly difficult. However, the necessity for professional development related to technology is more important today than ever. To
assist staff members realize the goals in their TIEP, TUHSD will provide learning opportunities in the following ways.

Infrastructure Current Reality
The Tolleson Union High School District strives to implement standardized, modular and scalable technology solutions. Where applicable, technology is centralized to take advantage of economies of scale and to reduce administrative burden. The District Office serves as the centralized network hub and delivers network access to 6 remote campuses. Centralized network access is delivered through a 100MBS wide area network (WAN) from Cox. Internet access is provided to the entire district via 50MBPS service from Cox. The District continues to apply for and receive ERATE funding for these Priority 1 services.
There are currently 3 PRI T1s terminating at the District Office, providing voice
communications throughout the District. Six campuses share a common and standard voice communications system, utilizing Voice over IP (VoIP) technology. The voice traffic travels over the 100 MBPS data WAN link connecting the campuses to the District Office
TUHSD has standardized with Dell PC platform running Windows XP with plans to deploy Windows 7 Professional throughout the District. All workstations and laptops meet state minimum standards for speed and capabilities. New PCs are purchased to meet a standard that will allow for a useful life of at least 5-7 years. The District is committed to a minimum 6:1 student to PC ratio, while maintaining a 5-7 year PC lifecycle.
The District utilizes a centralized SAN for the majority data storage. As more technology is deployed in the TUHSD infrastructure the data storage needs of the District are
growing. The SAN provides centralized data storage for the entire district and will easily scale as the storage needs increase.
The District network standard is to provide a Gigabit backbone and 100 MBPS connectivity to the campuses. The Network infrastructures of Tolleson Union HS and Sierra Linda support the district standard, but the three remaining schools (La Joya Community HS, Copper Canyon HS, and Westview HS) currently don’t have Gigabit backbones. CHS, WHS and LHS networks are scheduled to be upgraded with up-to-date hardware to support District backbone standard.
SHS for funding year 2010-11 which will bring these schools to the district minimum backbone standard.
The district has recently implemented iVisions for its employees to enhance business functions and reduce the amount of paper communication (payroll direct deposit slips). The district is also in the process of implementing push-to-talk cell phone
technology for school administration staff and buses that is to replace the aging two-way radio. The district has also implemented an online employment application system.
The current technology in the District is supporting areas of learning through the use of Read180, System44, NovaNet, ALEKs math software, Moodle server, public area
computers, and interdisciplinary computer labs.

EVALUATION
The evaluation of the Tolleson Union High School District #214 Technology Plan will be on an ongoing basis by the Technology Committee. The evaluation process will include but not limited to the four areas on the Needs Assessment: Student Learning,
Leadership, Professional Development and Infrastructure. Technology Committee:
On a quarterly basis, the committee will assess the status of the plan and make any adjustments needed.
Will meet with local school technology group to gather feedback and communicate progress of technology plan\projects
Technology Department:
The Technology Department will have an ongoing agenda item discussion with the Technology Committee the progress and status of all ongoing technology infrastructure updates.
The Technology Department will submit to the School Board and\or District Leadership Team an infrastructure and project update\status on a bi-annual basis or as requested by the board or superintendent.
