Worship Resource for Epiphany 4 (Sunday, January 31, 2021)

Thanks for joining us in worship today! If you are worshipping online, be sure to fill out the digital connection card. Today is the second in our four-week sermon series, titled “They Met Jesus.” Today we meet a demon possessed man, who oddly enough was spending time in the Temple.

Sunday School this Week

In Adult Sunday School class we continue the 10 week journey to the Holy Land with teacher Ray Vander Laan. This series specifically walks us to the key places that lead to the death and resurrection of the Messiah. Join us on Zoom.

Getting Reading for Worship

As you get ready for worship, you will want to have:

1. Your Bible. We will be reading these passages: Deuteronomy 18:15-20, 1 Corinthians 8:1-13 and Mark 1:21-28.

2. A With One Voice (WOV) hymnal. We will sing hymn #649 (“I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light”). We will conclude the service by singing hymn #501from the Lutheran Book of Worship (“He Leadeth Me: O Blessed Thought”).

3. The elements for Holy Communion. We encourage you to strive for a bread product and something in the “fruit of the vine” category.

4. The worship service will be broadcast on YouTube. You will find links to both on the home page of the Grace website (www.grace-nalc.org).

Opening Hymn: I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light (WOV #649)

1. I want to walk as a child of the light. I want to follow Jesus.

God set the stars to give light to the world. The star of my life is Jesus.

Refrain: In him there is no darkness at all. The night and the day are both alike. The Lamb is the light of the city of God. Shine in my heart, Lord Jesus.

2. I want to see the brightness of God. I want to look at Jesus.

Clear Sun of Righteousness, shine on my path, and show me the way to the father. Refrain

3. I’m looking for the coming of Christ. I want to be with Jesus.

When we have run with patience the race, we shall know the joy of Jesus. Refrain

Brief Order for Confession and Forgiveness

Have mercy on us. In your compassion forgive us our sins known and unknown, things done and left undone. Uphold us by your Spirit so that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

15The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. 16For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.” 17The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. 19I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name. 20But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.”

Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. 2Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. 3But whoever loves God is known by God. 4So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that “An idol is nothing at all in the world” and that “There is no God but one.” 5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”), 6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. 7But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. 8But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we

do. 9Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak. 10For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol’s temple, won’t that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols? 11So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge. 12When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.

21They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the

synagogue and began to teach. 22The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24“What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” 25“Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. 27The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, for the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Giving of Your Tithes and Offerings

We encourage you to participate in the offering as you worship from your home. Have a designated basket where you place your offering, and include your children in the process. Let them serve as ushers, for example. Use this as a teaching time to talk about the importance of stewardship, and to pray for your church’s financial situation during these abnormal times. Here are a few giving options for you to consider:

1. Your Grace offering envelope is also a mailing envelope. We recommend added an additional piece of tape to secure the tab.

2. Give through the Grace app. It’s quick, simple and easy, and very secure. Connect through the “Give” option.

3. Use the “bill pay” option through your bank.

4. Arrange for automatic contributions through the Grace system (Vanco). Again this is very secure. There is a form to be filled out for this. Contact Church Administrator Darla Kalifoot (937-399-6257) to get this set up.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion

P: The Lord be with you! C: And also with you! P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord.

(4)

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Holy, Holy, Holy Lord

Holy, holy, holy Lord. God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen Lamb of God

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; grant us peace, grant us peace. At the pastor’s direction, share the communion elements with one another.

As you share the bread with one another, say “The body of Christ given for you.” As you share the cup with one another, say “The blood of Christ shed for you.”

Hymn: He Leadeth Me: O Blessed Thought (LBW #501)

1. He leadeth me: oh, blessed thought! Oh, words with heav’nly comfort fraught! Whate’er I do, where’er I be, Still ‘tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

Refrain: He leadeth me, he leadeth me, By his own hand he leadeth me. His faithful foll’wer I would be, For by his hand he leadeth me.

2. Sometime mid scenes of deepest gloom, Sometimes where Eden’s bowers bloom, By waters calm, o’er troubled sea, Still ‘tis God’s hand that leadeth me. Refrain 3. Lord, I would clasp thy hand in mine, Nor ever murmur nor repine;

Content, whatever lot I see, Since ‘tis my God that leadeth me. Refrain 4. And when my task on earth is done, When by thy grace the vict’ry’s won,

E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee, Since God through Jordan leadeth me. Refrain
