1. CENTRAL BANK
The principal objectives of the Bank of Botswana are to:
(a) Promote and maintain monetary stability, an efficient payment mechanism and the liquidity, solvency and proper functioning of a sound-based monetary credit and financial system in Botswana.
(b) Foster monetary, credit and financial conditions conducive to the orderly, balanced and sustained economic development of Botswana.
(c) Assist in so far as it is not inconsistent with the set-up objectives in the attainment of national economic development goals.

2. COMMERCIAL BANKS
These are entities licensed under the Banking Act (CAP. 46:04) to conduct banking business. The Banking Act defines banking business as the acceptance of deposits of money repayable on demand, after fixed periods or after notice, as the case may be, by cheque or otherwise. 4.4 Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA)
The Government established CEDA in response to recommendations from both the National Conference on Citizen Economic Empowerment (NACCEE) held in July 1999 in Gaborone and the 4th Evaluation of Financial Assistance Policy, which was terminated in 2000. Both reports called for support of business development to promote development of citizen entrepreneurship, which has been found lacking among a large majority of citizens. NACCEE also recommended that the citizen empowerment schemes be consolidated and the financial assistance be provided as loans and not grants. It is against this background that government established CEDA to redirect the efforts to deal with constraints affecting the development of citizen business and participation in the economy.
