SUMMER 2016

the traditional

Same Name. Same Bank. Same Great Service.

People often ask me if we are ever going to switch our “Lake Elmo Bank” name. After all, we serve the east side of the Twin Cities and our customers are no longer just from Lake Elmo.

We are proud of our name! It represents over 100 years of community ownership and involvement; 100 years of building relationships, and building our reputation. We make our decisions not just for tomorrow, but for the long, unforeseen future. Our name stands for a community bank working hard every day for the individuals, families and small businesses that are the engine to our local economy. We hope that when you see Lake Elmo Bank, you know that we are your community bank. We are willing to work with you – so, no, we are not going to change our name. Our name is unique and so is our dedication to our customers! Thank you for allowing us to be your community bank.

Lake Elmo Bank – We Are A Dementia Friendly Business

LEB partnered with the ACT on Alzheimer’s in 2014 and was instrumental in developing the tools and skills needed to make our Stillwater Community a Dementia Capable Community. LEB is the first and only business in the St. Croix Valley Area who has completed “dementia friendly” training with its employees. “Our staff learned a bit more about the challenges faced by individuals with dementia,” says Christine Clark – Vice President, LEB. “We also learned strategies to help make their visit or transaction with Lake Elmo Bank more pleasant. We are here to help.”

Teaching Kids to Save

LEB Partners with Lakeview

Hospital to Power Up for Kids!

Power Up for Kids is Lakeview’s campaign to

encourage healthy eating and exercise with the youth in our community. Partnering with Lakeview for their Power Up Week in May, LEB donated a “Power Up with Little Elmo” Gift Pack drawing. Little Elmo water bottles were given to kids during the Saturday

event to promote the importance of drinking water. Lakeview’s Chomp stopped by our Community Shred-It Day to visit with customers and Little Elmo. Our Little Elmo Savers ClubSM

has been working in the classrooms at Lake Elmo Elementary classroom for 9 years. A series of presentations gives students an understanding of how to manage money along with how a bank works. Students have an opportunity to open a savings

account and transact business. The program concludes

with a tour of Lake Elmo Bank. “The kids really seem to enjoy learning about money and how to save for things they would like to purchase,” says Deb Raleigh, who

coordinates the Little Elmo Learners Program. “Our employees enjoy visiting the school and sharing information about the bank and their jobs.”

LEB Employees, Customers & Communities

Raise Over $7,000 for Food Shelf

Lake Elmo Bank collected food for the local food shelf by opening their lobbies for collection during March – National Food Drive Month.

Christine Clark, LEB Vice President – Marketing, challenged her good friends at First State Bank & Trust in Bayport to a friendly competition in 2014 and they have continued the annual challenge. Combined, both Banks raised more than $15,000 in cash and food donations for the Valley Outreach Food Shelf. “The enthusiasm and generosity from our employees and our customers was once again truly amazing,” said Christine Clark.

LEB Celebrates 19th Annual Employee Appreciation Week

A Superhero’s Success!

The 19th annual LEB Employee Appreciation Week had something for everyone! This annual event is the Bank’s way of saying “thanks” to our employees by planning fun activities and friendly competition throughout the week. The Superhero theme had people dressing in costume at the Woody’s Bar & Grill Happy Hour Event to wrap up the week.

Committed to its mission of providing personal service second to none, the Bank annually recognizes one employee who exemplifies this tradition of service in his/her daily routine.

The Board of Directors selects the recipient based on nominations from bank employees, recognizing the employee’s commitment to service, as well as community commitment.

This year’s recipient, Beth Springborn, joins a list of 18

past winners. Beth started as a student teller in 1998. She left the Bank to spend time with her young family in 2006, returning to LEB in 2013 as the Lead Teller/Personal Banker in our Oakdale Office.

“What an honor to be nominated by your peers,” says Springborn. “This award is another great example of how Lake Elmo Bank really cares about its employees.” Beth was presented with the award – and $1,500 at the Annual Employee Appreciation Breakfast in April.

IRA News: Leverage your Required Minimum

Distribution – Donate to Charity

In December 2015, Congress passed legislation that made Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) rules permanent at their existing levels, currently $100,000 per taxpayer over age 70 ½. Since 2006, people have been able to donate directly from their IRA to a charity. However, prior to this legislation, these rules had to be extended each year — usually in the last weeks of December. There was always a chance that the rules would not be extended, making tax planning and charitable planning complicated. This is good news for individuals and charities as it now allows more certainty regarding charitable giving.

How it works:

To be considered a Qualified Charitable Distribution, the following must occur:

1. IRA account holder must be at least 70 ½ when the distribution is made. 2. Distribution must be made directly by the custodian of your IRA to the charity.

3. The amount excludable per person is up to $100,000 per person (note: if filing a joint return, both spouses may make a QCD up to the threshold).

4. Charity must be qualified for charitable income tax deduction for an individual. 5. Charity must provide contribution acknowledgment.

6. The contribution is not claimed as a deduction on the donor’s tax return, but the distribution is not included on the tax return either. The QCD also counts toward the annual Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).

If you are currently taking RMDs, please consult with your tax advisor to see how you may benefit from a QCD. It is a real win-win situation.
