Performance tables

2014

Introduction

These 16-18 performance tables provide

infor-mation on the attainment of students of sixth

form age in secondary schools and further

education sector colleges. They also show how

the results compare with other schools and

colleges in a local authority area and in England

as a whole.

All schools and colleges in a local authority

area are listed in alphabetical order including:

maintained secondary schools; academies;

free schools; independent schools; and further

education colleges with students aged 16-18.

Special schools that have chosen to be included

are also listed, as are any sixth form centres or

consortia that operate in an area.

The performance tables’ website

www.education.gov.uk/schools/performance

contains download data showing the

infor-mation underlying the 2014 16-18 performance

tables in a spreadsheet format. Additional

down-load data is also available which shows

indi-vidual A level and other advanced level

qualii-cation results at subject level for each school and

college. This data can be found on the

perfor-mance tables’ website under ‘Download Data’.

The information in these tables only provides

part of the picture of the work done in schools

and colleges. For example, colleges often

provide for a wider range of student needs and

include adults as well as young people among

their students. The tables should be considered

alongside other important sources of

informa-tion such as Ofsted reports, other comparative

performance information on further education

providers and information from schools and

colleges themselves.

Ofsted inspection reports can be found on

Ofsted’s website at www.gov.uk/government/

organisations/ofsted, or through the

perfor-mance tables website on the school/college

page or direct from the school or college.

Schools and colleges should be able to

sign-post their students to sources of support to

assist them when considering their post-16

options. Support is also available from the

National Careers Service via telephone and

webchat at  (0800 100 900 or https://nation

alcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/Pages/Home.

About the 2014 results

Students included in performance tables

The tables report the results of 16-18 year old

students at the end of advanced level study in

the 2013/14 academic year. Students are only

included if they are aged 16, 17 or 18 at the start

of the 2013/14 academic year. They will have

completed key stage 4 and studied advanced

level academic or vocational qualiications before

moving to higher education or employment. In

the majority of cases this will be those students

at the end of two years of advanced level study

(akin to a traditional sixth form), but may include

those students completing in one year or three.

The performance indicators are separated into

three separate cohorts: A level; academic; and

vocational. The respective measures are based

on the number of students within each cohort:

A level cohort includes a student that

has been entered for at least one A level,

and can include students who took other

qualiications alongside an A level.

academic cohort includes a student

that has been entered for at least one A

level or an International Baccalaureate,

Pre-U or AQA Baccalaureate, and can

include students who took a vocational

qualiication alongside an academic

qualiication.

Vocational cohort includes a student

that has been entered for at least one

substantial advanced level vocational

qualiication. It excludes students who

did not take vocational qualiications, but

can include students who took academic

qualiications alongside a vocational

qualiication.

Where a student has undertaken a

programme with a mix of academic and

vocational qualiications, they will appear

in more than one cohort if they meet the

relevant criteria.

Qualiications reported

A level attainment measures, with the

excep-tion of A level grades AAB, include AS results and

applied A levels where they have been achieved

alongside academic qualiications. Academic

measures include A level, AS, International

Baccalaureate, Pre-U, AQA Baccalaureate,

Free Standing Maths Qualiications, Advanced

Extension Awards and Extended Projects. The

vocational measures report achievements

in all substantial advanced level vocational

qualiications.

A ‘substantial’ advanced level academic or

vocational qualiication is deined as a

qualii-cation that is at least the size of an A level (180

guided learning hours per year), for example a

BTEC Subsidiary Diploma (Level 3).

Local and national averages

A local authority average is shown for each local

authority in England. These averages are based

on the results of all state funded schools and

fur-ther education sector colleges in a local area.

Two national averages are shown. One is

based on the results of state funded secondary

schools and further education sector colleges

only. The other includes independent schools

as well as state funded secondary schools and

further education sector colleges.

You may wish to compare the results of

indi-vidual schools and colleges with the published

local and national averages.

How the tables were compiled

The A level, academic and vocational

qualii-cation results were provided by the awarding

organisations concerned and then checked, and

where appropriate amended by schools and

colleges in October 2014. Some reviews of the

grades requested from awarding organisations

by schools and colleges were not completed in

time to afect the information included in these

tables. It is therefore possible that, for some

schools and colleges, the published

informa-tion would have been diferent had the results

of the reviews been available earlier. If you have

an interest in a particular institution’s results you

should check with the school or college.

(6)

5

Sixth form centres and consortia

In some areas, to pool resources and ofer a

wider range of post-16 courses to students,

schools and colleges collaborate together in a

group known as a sixth form centre or

consor-tium. Where schools and colleges are known to

be part of a sixth form centre or consortium, a

symbol

will appear in these tables next to the

age range of the school or college. The sixth

form centre or consortium will also be named

and its results shown separately towards the

end of the tables, together with the names of

the participating schools and colleges.

Special schools

Students who need more specialised teaching

and facilities may go to special schools. Special

schools with sixth form students may choose to

have their results included in the 16-18

perfor-mance tables. Some special schools will have

no results published for their students because

they do not take the qualiications reported in

these tables.

Closed or new schools and colleges

Schools and colleges that closed since January

2014 are reported as closed in these tables.

Any state funded school or college that opens

on or after 12 September 2013 will be

pub-lished as a new school in these 16-18

perfor-mance tables with no results.

Publication of small numbers

Results based on a cohort of ive or fewer

stu-dents are suppressed to reduce the risk of

indi-vidual students being identiied from

pub-lished data. Where data is suppressed this is

published as ‘SUPP’.

(7)

6

Examination results reported in the 16-18

perfor-mance tables relect the attainment of students

of sixth form age at the end of advanced level

3 study in the 2013/14 academic year. Results

are only reported if they relate to advanced

(lev-el 3) qualiications approved under Section 96 of

the Learning and Skills Act 2000. Further details

on approved qualiications can be found on the

website

www.education.gov.uk/section96.

Attainment measures

We publish two types of attainment measures

for students at the end of 16-18 study –

thresh-old measures and average point score. Both are

calculated from student’s examination results

at level 3.

All calculations are based on the cumulative

achievement of students, usually over two years

of study.

Average point score per examination entry

gives an indication of the average grade achieved

by students at a school or college. The measure is

expressed as a point score and the grade

equiv-alent to support interpretation. Further details

on the way in which these measures are

calcu-lated can be found in ‘Average point scores

cal-culations’ and ‘Average grade calcal-culations’ under

‘Methodology and technical guides’ on the

per-formance tables’ website.

Average point score per full-time equivalent

student

measures the average size of study

programme taken by students at a school or

college and the average cumulative results

achieved. The more qualiications taken by

stu-dents and the higher the grades, the higher the

average point scores per student. To recognise

students who are undertaking a mix of

aca-demic and vocational qualiications, this

meas-ure is calculated using the number of full-time

equivalent students in each cohort. Further

details on the way in which this measure is

cal-culated can be found in ‘Average point scores

calculations’ under ‘Methodology and technical

guides’ on the performance tables’ website.

For the purposes of calculating the average point

scores, advanced academic qualiications are

assigned points based on their broad

“equiva-lence” with A level grades. Advanced

vocation-al quvocation-aliications are assigned points based on

how they broadly compare with A level grades.

A document ‘Point Score Allocations’ found under

‘Methodology and technical guides’ on the

perfor-mance tables’ website explains the points assigned

to diferent qualiication grades.

Threshold measures

show the proportion of

students achieving one, two or three A levels,

or ‘substantial’ academic or vocational

qualiica-tions. Substantial qualiications are those that are

at least the size of an A level. Since these

meas-ures are reported separately for each qualiication

type, a lower proportion of students will achieve

these measures if they are taking a mix of

aca-demic and vocational qualiications. As such, the

cohort information and average point score per

full-time equivalent student should be

consid-ered alongside these measures.

(8)

7

The A level facilitating subject measure at

grades AAB

is another type of threshold

meas-ure relevant to A levels only. It shows the

propor-tion of students achieving grades AAB in at least

two facilitating subjects, providing a measure of

excellence in A level attainment. The

‘facilitat-ing’ subjects include biology, chemistry, physics,

mathematics, further mathematics, geography,

history, English literature, modern and classical

languages.

Students who already have a good idea of what

they want to study at university  should check

the usual entry requirements for their chosen

course and ensure that their choices at advanced

level  include  any required subjects. Students

who are less sure will want to keep their options

open while they  decide what to  do.  These

stu-dents might want to consider choosing at least

two facilitating subjects because they are most

commonly  required  for entry to degree courses

at Russell Group universities. The study of A levels

in particular subjects does not, of course,

guaran-tee anyone a place. Entry to university is

competi-tive and achieving good grades is also important.

You can ind more information on subject choice

and entry requirements at Russell Group

univer-sities at:

http://russellgroup.ac.uk/informed

-choices/

Level 3 value added

Value added is a measure of the progress

students have made between the different

stages of their education in relation to their

peers nationally. For level 3 value added, we

look at the results achieved by each student

in advanced level qualifications and

com-pare them with the achievements of similar

students nationally who, according to their

results at the end of key stage 4, were of the

same level of ability.

The value added measures are not included

in these tables, however they are published

on the performance tables’ website. To find

out more about level 3 value added,

includ-ing details on how it is calculated, please see

the level 3 value added user guide under

‘Methodology and technical guides’ on the

performance tables’ website.

(9)

8

The cohort information should be

consid-ered alongside the other measures,

particu-larly, when interpreting the proportion of

stu-dents achieving one, two and three A level/s,

academic and vocational qualiications. The

cohort information shows the number of

stu-dents aged 16-18, who, in 2013/14 academic

year, were:

on roll at a school or college

at the end of key stage 5 study (i.e. A level,

academic or vocational study)

at the end of A level study

at the end of academic study (International

Baccalaureate, Pre-U, AQA Baccalaureate,

Free Standing Maths Qualiications, Advanced

Extension Awards and Extended Projects)

at the end of vocational study

The cohort information also shows the

num-ber of full-time equivalent students aged 16-18

who, in the academic year 2013/14, were at the

end of:

A level study

advanced level academic study

advanced level vocational study

Cohort information

The number of full-time equivalent students

in each cohort shows the proportion of time a

student spends on each qualiication type. For

example, a student undertaking only A level

qualiications will be counted as one full-time

equivalent student at the end of A level study.

However, a student taking a mix of qualiication

types, such as two A levels and one advanced

level vocational qualiication (the same size of

two A levels), will be counted as half of a

stu-dent at the end of A level study and half at the

end of advanced level vocational study.

The full-time equivalent cohort igures are used

to calculate the average point scores per

stu-dent. This approach ensures that these

meas-ures take account of students undertaking a

mix of academic and vocational qualiications.
