Needs Statement

Sarasota Ski-A-Rees is not allowed to finance funds according to our by-laws.

Background Statement

“The Sarasota Ski-a-Rees, established in 1957, is a multigenerational team whose mission is to perform free waterski shows for the public, participate in waterski competitions, train youth and adults in the sport of show skiing, educate the public on manatee safety, and provide waterski clinics and shows for those with

disabilities.” Community involvement is the most important part of our existence and family participation is the cornerstone. Our Team prides itself in teaching the value of community involvement, teamwork, athletics, sportsmanship, and presenting yourself as self-confident and a leader in private and public venues.

PROGRAMS

Free Community Water Ski Shows

Description Annual show design and development which includes coordination of

Team members developing show script, choreographed music, props, costumes, boat patterns, ski acts and act pay ons and actay offs and equipment repair and purchase. Total annual cost to provide this program is $40,0000.

Short Term Success We work toward improving performances based upon weekly audience

reactions and feedback. The short term goals are to improve Team member performance and interaction with the audience which in turn helps Team members develop self-confidence, ability to work together with others to accomplish a goal, athletic abilities and public

presentations.

Long Term Success The long term goals are to continue outreach to the community building

better name recognition for the Free water ski shows.

The long term goals for Team members is the provide valuable

groundwork so that individuals can use the communication, performing and team building skills they learned while participating in the Ski Shows for use throughout their lives.

Program Success Monitoring We know that the program is working based upon weekly comments from

the audience that states they come every year to see the shows as well as asking about various performers to keep track of their accomplishments.

Program Success Examples Multiple Team Members have used these skills to build careers such as

Doctors, Attorneys, Builders, Accountants, Teachers and Entrepreneurs. There have also been numerous members who have been recruited into professional water ski shows through the nation.

Special Needs Water Ski Clinics

Description A Water Ski clinic with adaptive water ski sitchairs which allow disabled

individuals to experience the joy and freedom of water skiing. Special Needs instructors and Ski-A-Rees Team members join together to provide Special Needs individuals a unique opportunity to experience and enjoy an activity that is not usually availability to them.

Short Term Success To provide a unique enjoyable program which enhances the lives of

Special Needs Individuals thru the activity of water skiing on sit-skis with assistance of experienced side able-bodied skiers. 95% of the

participants leave with enthusiastic memories of the day wishing they could ski again.

Long Term Success The program and water skiing experience stays with the participants many

years after as well as the benefit it gives their care givers too when they see the participants being extremely happy when they can do something themselves.

Program Success Monitoring By the response rate at signing up for the program each time it is offered.

We are working towards providing it twice a year.

Program Success Examples Many return participants and their care givers have stated that they were

so thankful that they were able to come back. A father said his son, who was 23, had a picture on his wall of himself skiing from a clinic 5 years previous and talked about it everyday. Others talk about how the

participants discuss the skiing throughout the year and say how they want to participate again.

Collaborations

Sarasota Ski-A-Rees collaborates with the following entities:

1) The City of Sarasota by providing Free Water Ski Shows and maintain and improve the site they provide us on City Island.

2) USA Water Ski Association who we partner with for daily activities as well as Regional and National Tournaments, and Driver - Skier Clinics.

3) Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission who we partner with to educate and inform the attending public of Manatee Awareness and Protection. We monitor the area we ski in for Manatee and report it to the Fish and Wildlife Commission.

Ski-A-Rees biggest management challenge is to figure out how to spend our limited dollars in the most effective way to provide first class water ski shows and maintain and improve our site. Ski-A-Rees is not allowed to borrow funds according to our by-laws.

In 2016 Sarasota Ski-A-Rees is building the Team's Recognition thru Board Approved Ski Shows, Advertising, and Fund Raising Opportunities.
