What does the story of Cinderella and the sacred

season of Lent have in common? Well, the name

Cinderella derives from a root word meaning “one

who sits in the ashes”. Hence the season of Lent

begins with Ash Wednesday as we are marked with

ashes signaling a period of repentance. And “lent” comes from an old

English word meaning spring. Before we can experience the springtime

of new life in Easter we must change our way of seeing things (which is

what repentance actually means.)

All of this begins formally on Ash Wednesday,

February 17th. However, we will informally begin

on the weekend of February 13-14th. You will be

able to pick up booklets by Bishop Robert Barron

or a little black book. Hopefully these popular

books can help you establish an active prayer life which is the first of

three spiritual pillars in Lent. The second spiritual pillar is giving alms to the

poor. So on that weekend you will learn about Unbound. This is a

catholic lay sponsored organization. It serves the poor in economically

challenged countries, primarily Latin America, but also countries in

Africa and all of the Philippines. It can be one way for you to build the

second pillar of your Lenten season.

Now the final pillar is penance, the most neglected of all the Christian

virtues. This year why not think outside the box? Don’t just “give up”

sweets or beer or pizza. Why not give up the need to

be right in this polarized American country of ours?

Or focus on just listening to someone for a day,

maybe someone you do not spontaneously like. Or

maybe the best penance, to accept the day-in

day-out things that go wrong in your life.

Prepare even now for Lent so that you can fully enjoy

the springtime life of Easter. Fr. John

ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT - THE HOLY EUCHARIST

Mother Teresa said: "Do little things well with love."

The new year is starting. Will you do a little thing and give your love in an hour each week to the Baby Jesus who is God's Love to you, the Crucified Jesus who died for your sins, the Risen Jesus who opened Heaven for you, and the Eucharistic Jesus who gives you Himself for your spiritual sustenance?

Jesus asked the Apostles "Could you not watch one hour with Me?" He asks you the same.

We are blessed in this parish to have Perpetual Eucharistic

Adora-tion. Christ awaits a parish adorerevery hour of the day, every hour of the week, all year in the Holy Family Chapel.. Most hours of the day someone from the parish is with him, giving them their love and receiving His Love. There are also several hours each week with no adorer honoring Jesus.

He is there by Himself because no one cares enough to be with him. It takes a small effort done with love to get out of your comfort zone and to bring your love and receive His Love. He gives you 168 hours each week. Will you give him one of them back each week to honor and love him?

If you would like to answer Christ's call to you, contact Jim/Martha Coyne 252-414-8389 kofcjimc@gmail.com Vernon/Joanne Dunn 321-5896/355-3628

Thank you for all the support and inquiries about the roof. We met with the Architect from the Diocese about the roof, here is his recommendation.

“Based on our visual inspection of the exterior, it appears more invasive inspections may be warranted to either confirm or rule out moisture damage within the wall assembly. My recommendation would be to hire an envelope consultant to review the issue, per-form additional invasive inspections if necessary, and to provide a recommendation and estimate for re-pairs, up to and possibly including providing a rede-signed envelope.”

We are in contact with some firms and getting quotes to do a better inspection to determine how best to move forward.

Our Gift Card program is still

going on.

Call Marlene Hughes today at: 252-355-2460 to place your gift

card order for any of the following stores: Food Lion, Walmart, Fresh Market, Kohls, Crack-er Barrel, Starbucks, Darden Restaurants, JCrack-ersey Mike's, Panera Bread, China 10, Red Robin, Am-azon, & Red Lobster.

The Gift Card Program supports Saint Peter Catholic School since 2019, given $21,000 thus far.
