TIPS

Vacations should be a time for rest, relaxation and

rejuvenation. But many CPAP therapy patients don’t think

to travel with their equipment. This can leave them tired and

reduce the overall enjoyment of the trip. Remember, even

one night without CPAP therapy can cause apnea

symptoms to return.

There’s no reason not to take your equipment with you

even if you’re flying. Even with newer Department of

Transportation carry-on bag limits, CPAP equipment is

considered a medical supply and luggage limits may

not apply.

It is recommended that you not check your CPAP machine,

but instead carry it on. Once CPAP equipment is checked,

it is much more susceptible to getting lost or damaged. Just

like medications, your machine and mask are important to

your health, so keep them close by. Being tired on vacation

is no fun. Making sure you get the same CPAP therapy on

the road as you do at home will go a long way to making

your trip as enjoyable as you planned.

• If you sleep on your side or on your stomach, the CPAP nasal pillows

should be sized to fit the nostrils. You’ll be able to change

positions easier and keep the pillow system in place.

• Use a bit of nasal lubricant if your nose gets irritated. It will

There are many reasons you might

have sleep apnea. Large tonsils, gender,

age and smoking all may contribute

to the condition. However, a common

characteristic shared by people with

sleep apnea is a struggle with weight.

Additional fat deposits around the

neck can constrict the airway, making

obstruction more likely to occur.

Sleep apnea is not always related to

weight, but doctors tell us that losing as

little as 10 percent of our body weight

can reduce moderate apnea occurrences

by 14 to 26 percent.

Losing weight through exercise when

you have sleep apnea can be difficult.

When you don’t get enough sleep, you

may be too tired to exert yourself.

So start slow and build. Try yawning

or simple deep breathing repeatedly
