“You shall love the Lord you God. You shall love your

neighbor as yourself.” (Mk 12:30-31)

“We have come to believe in God's love

: in these words

the Christian can express the fundamental decision of

his life. Being Christian is not the result of an ethical

choice or a lofty idea, but the encounter with an event, a

person, which gives life a new horizon and a decisive

direction. Saint John's Gospel describes that event in

these words: “God so loved the world that he gave his

only Son, that whoever believes in him should ... have

eternal life” (3:16). In acknowledging the centrality of

love, Christian faith has retained the core of Israel's faith,

while at the same time giving it new depth and breadth.

The pious Jew prayed daily the words of the Book of

Deuteronomy which expressed the heart of his

exis-tence: “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord, and

you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and

with all your soul and with all your might” (6:4-5). Jesus

united into a single precept this commandment of love

for God and the commandment of love for neighbor

found in the Book of Leviticus: “You shall love your

neighbor as yourself” (19:18; cf. Mk 12:29-31). Since

God has first loved us (cf. 1 Jn 4:10), love is now no

longer a mere “command”; it is the response to the gift of

love with which God draws near to us.

Worship” itself, Eucharistic communion, includes the

re-ality both of being loved and of loving others in turn. A

Eucharist which does not pass over into the concrete

practice of love is intrinsically fragmented. Conversely

the “commandment” of love is only possible because it is

more than a requirement. Love can be “commanded”

because it has first been given.

(Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est, 1, 14)

ST. LUKE’S HOME HEALTH & HOSPICE

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

“What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you

read it?” 27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with

all your heart and with all your soul and with all your

strength and with all your mind’[a]; and, ‘Love your

neighbor as yourself.’” The Good Samaritan spent his time, attention and money on the man in the gutter. The others saw the man, and passed by on the other side.

Please don’t pass by on the other side. St Luke’s Hospice needs compassionate, caring hospice volunteers to visit and sit with hospice patients, relieving their caregivers to go shopping, have lunch with a friend, or just have some quiet time. Call Marie Sharp at 208-814-7603 or email at [email protected] for more information.

-Padre Julio Vicente

“Amarás al Señor tu Dios. Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.”

(Mc 12, 30-31)

(Benedicto XVI, Deus Caritas Est, 1, 14)
