LOCOMOTIVES: INVESTMENTS

FOR THE LONG HAUL

The locomotives you buy today must not only integrate the most reliable, robust and proven sub-systems and components, they must also come with full lifetime field support back-up wherever you need it. This is because you want to be able to focus on serving your customers, knowing that you can depend on the locomotive builder to supply replacement parts or maintenance.

To cross national borders in Europe, locomotives need to be “interoperable” – in other words, equipped with voltage power supply and multi-standard signaling equipment (ETCS1 + a set of country-specific signaling systems).

PRIMA,

PROVEN PERFORMANCE

WITH UPGRADEABLE TECHNOLOGY

The world of transport by rail is changing. Freight haulage and passenger

service operators are ever more demanding. They expect reliability,

availabi-lity, competitiveness and low energy consumption. Moreover, operators are

looking for rolling stock that guarantees good working conditions for drivers

and ensures safety for all.

(3)

MODULAR AND INTEROPERABLE SUB-SYSTEMS

The principal components of the Prima locomotive are standardized: signaling equipment, BoBo and CoCo bogies and the Onix traction system. Each component can easily be replaced to meet your changing needs.

Prima locomotives are fully interoperable². In other words, they are configurable for cross-border services throughout Europe and can likewise be adapted to prevailing standards anywhere in the world.

Power supply and safety equipment differ from one European country to another. In order to cross borders with ease, Prima locomotives can be fitted with safety equipment and pantographs ready to run on any one of four different power supply voltages (25 kV, 15 kV, 1,500 V and 3,000 V).

PRIMA BLENDS RELIABILITY WITH AVAILABILITY AND

EFFICIENCY

Prima locomotives are fitted with an independent traction system on each axle: should a driver notice a fault on an axle, the locomotive can operate at 75% of its usual perfor-mance in a BoBo version, or at 83% for a CoCo version, thereby considerably reducing the risk of immobilization.

The locomotives are also equipped with a highly reliable braking system that optimizes operating conditions. Lastly, Prima locomotives are fitted with brakes that are both rheos-tatic and regenerative, returning energy back to the power grid via the catenary.

2Prima locomotives are fully compliant with Europe’s Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI)

Prima’s modularity allows us to configure the specification you need at

time of purchase and then later, adapt it for a different application. In this

way your locomotive remains at the forefront of technology throughout

its complete life cycle. From the outset, our engineers have kept in mind

“ease of maintenance” in designing Prima to guarantee low operating cost

and optimum use.

MASTERING LIFE CYCLE COST

When you buy your locomotive, you consider its efficiency, the purchase price and also maintenance and repair costs. In this respect too, Prima locomotives provide multiple advantages.

From the initial product concept through to fabrication, Alstom engineers developed Prima to minimize maintenance costs and to mitigate obsolescence risk.

Easy access to its different sub systems was another Prima design objective. For instance, its traction converters are equipped with fast plug-in hydraulic connectors that allow them to be removed without draining the cooling liquid.

The Prima’s central gangway, the widest in this class of locomotives, facilitates access to the traction units. Prima’s structural modularity allows the swift replacement of parts damaged in the event of an accident.

The standardization of Prima’s structure and its main components considerably limits the number of subsets. Prima is equipped with Alstom's remote diagnostic solution, TrainTracer, that identifies wear in each of the various sub-systems and transmits these data to the maintenance centre. This allows maintenance or repair actions to pre-empt failures and greatly reduce the risk that units in your fleet will break down at a remote location and be out of use for an extended period.

Alstom applies a double sourcing policy in order to mitigate the risk that any key component - the IGBT3in particular - becomes unavailable. Alstom guarantees the supply of replacement parts throughout your Prima locomotive’s full lifespan.

ERGONOMICS AND COMFORT FOR YOUR DRIVERS

It is essential that your drivers benefit from optimum working conditions. Prima locomo-tives provide the EUDDplus (European Driver's Desk) and a generous work and living space specially designed for a two-driver team. The layout of the control panel and the amenities for resting periods provide excellent ergonomics and comfort for both men and women drivers. The full insulation of the driver cab from the machine room, guarantees a very low level of noise at work and while resting.

For optimum comfort, the cabin is equipped with air conditioning. A wide range of optional equipment and accessories such as lavatories, beds, refrigerators or microwave ovens may be selected to further enhance the on-board comfort of drivers on extended itineraries.

Prima II, a modernized design

The new Prima design created by Alstom’s in-house design team combines esthetics with technology. Alstom’s Design & Styling Department chose a solution that is not only innovative, but also technically reliable and economically efficient.

Thanks to its unabashedly modern design, Prima fully expresses its power, efficiency and reliability while also meeting exacting manufacturing efficiency parameters. The pure contours of the driver’s cab window area offer the driver unequalled comfort and visibility. Wide and flat side panels give operators an attractive surface to reinforce their brand (by placing logo and graphics). This will enable them to project their identity on the railway network or to generate revenues through advertising.

ONIX, A GUARANTEE OF RELIABILITY

Alstom was the first train-builder to use IGBT technology in a locomotive. Our Onix IGBT-technology, train propulsion system, guarantees the efficiency of the Prima's traction and braking, as it does also in our full range of trains – from trams to very high speed trains. This traction system is designed to be powered by any one of four voltages. It is composed of a set of components, the most important being the IGBT inverter. IGBT technology made it possible to reduce the size and the weight of the traction system while boosting its performance. It improves the Prima's reliability and reduces its energy consumption. Onix also features an integrated low-maintenance, low-noise ventilation system that increases reliability and improves air flow.

AT THE VANGUARD OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

In order to optimize your maintenance process, rolling stock must be equipped to deliver an increasingly large amount of data swiftly. For this purpose it is essential to use infor-mation technology such as wireless communication and centralized databases, fed via Internet or your own Intranet. Prima locomotives are equipped with TrainTracer, the same up-to-date technology that Alstom has already installed on high speed trains in United Kingdom.

TrainTracer provides an effective way to monitor key components. Maintenance teams are informed of each locomotive’s condition and possible failures in real time. It is also possible to complete the system with a GPS locating system. Access to this information enables maintenance teams to anticipate possible breakdowns and make the right diagnosis. It also makes it easier, in the event of an incident, to carry out repairs in situ.

A LEVEL OF SAFETY UNIQUE IN THE WORLD

The risk of an accident can never be averted. In developing the Prima locomotive, Alstom concentrated on maximizing the level of passive safety. Prima is designed to ensure total protection - for the driver and the key sub-systems. In the event of a collision, at a speed of up to 65 km/h, the body of the locomotive is protected at the chassis level by energy absorbing buffers.

The Prima locomotive remains undamaged in the event of a collision with a stationary 80 ton locomotive at a speed of up to 36 km/h. It is also protected in the event of collision with a stationary 15 ton convoy, when its speed does not exceed 65 km/h. In most cases damaged parts can easily be replaced at the customer’s depot. Lastly, the design of the locomotive’s body at the points at which it is linked to the bogies reduces the risk of deformation in the event of a crash. Alstom is the only train-builder in the world to offer such a high level of protection.

DEPENDABILITY UNCOMPROMISED

Prima combines proven technology with high levels of comfort and

safety. Alstom guarantees optimized freight and passenger operations

because Prima combines highly reliable components, optimized driver

ergonomics and an unsurpassed level of safety. Today already, Prima

is already setting the new standards for locomotive quality and

efficiency.

PRIMA IN THE WORLD

MOROCCO, ONCF

Morocco has launched a major program to modernize and restructure its railway network. To be able to rapidly meet the steep increase in passenger and freight traffic, the ONCF signed, in November 2007, a contract to acquire 20 Prima units. The locomotives, equipped for 3kV power supply, are ideal to pull either freight or passenger trains. They can however be easily upgraded to operate also with a 25 kV power supply, should the operator require this in the future. Particular attention was given to the comfort of the drivers: cabs are equipped with air conditioning and the living space is designed to provide two drivers with the best conditions. The last locomotive was delivered in August 2010.

CHINA, MOR (MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT)

In February 2007, Alstom delivered the first of the electric locomotives intended for freight traffic on the Datong – Qinhuangdao line. The global contract signed with the Chinese Ministry of Transport includes 180 Prima.

These double BoBo units powered by an individual traction drive for each axle are the most powerful locomotive sets in the world. This customer uses two of these 10 MW locomotives in double unit to haul loads of up to 20 000 tons. As such, they are the perfect solution to the customer's haulage requirements on this specific railway.

With its Onix IGBT traction system the Prima is particularly reliable, an essential requirement on lines which only have a limited number of repair workshops. In March 2007, Alstom signed a contract to deliver 500 CoCo triple axle locomotives, with power of 9600 kW able to tow convoys of up to 8,000 tons. Prima locomotives operating in China are built in partnership with a local train-builder. The first locomotives were completed and unveiled early 2010 in China.

FRANCE, VEOLIA

In October 2005, Veolia Cargo signed a contract with ALSTOM Transport for 17 electric BoBo locomotives for cross-border freight haulage operations in France and Germany. Other options have followed bringing the total number of Prima locomotives ordered to 31. Alstom’s know-how and experience were decisive in Veolia Cargo’s choice.

The contract, initiated by Veolia Cargo and now in the hands of Europorte France, VCH and the leaser CB-Rail, includes a 10-year provision for a full service preventive and corrective maintenance which is partly covered by our remote maintenance system, TrainTracer.

PRIMA DIESEL

The Prima range also includes diesel locomotives. Alstom has significant references in this market in a number of countries, such as Iran, Syria, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom and the United States. The SNCF ordered 300 diesel locomotives for delivery through to 2015.

PRIMA, A SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHIP

With LocLife Services, Alstom is committed to providing you with efficient maintenance services for your whole fleet of locomotives, supported by our network of workshops in Europe, within the time limits required by your business.

Lastly, to prolong your rolling stock’s lifespan, Alstom offers to renovate your stock of locomotives, whatever their brand. Alstom provides services which improve the reliability of your locomotives, increase their transport capacity and extend their lifespan, such as reengineering obsolete parts, adding modern technologies and/or equipment, renovating bogies and traction equipment and increasing power.

From 2002 to 2009, Alstom was chosen to maintain 434 freight locomotives for the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway Company. With 32,000 miles of track across 28 American states and 2 Canadian provinces, BNSF operates one of the most extensive North American railway networks. The contract between BNSF and Alstom implemented very advanced technologies based on CBM4, which models wear cycles of key locomotive components and subsystems. This technology enabled teams at the ARC (Alliance Reliability Center) to anticipate the moment when parts needed to be serviced or replaced, thereby making it possible to optimize components’ lifespan.
