The dominate race in Wakulla is white, with nearly all of the county being so. The next most populous race is black, with a little over 10% of the county. There are few Asians, Pacific Islanders, Others, Two or More, Hispanics, and Native Americans in the county. The population of Wakulla is often referred to as “Florida Crackers” or “Hicks”.

The county seat, Crawfordville, is the only
unincorporated county seat among Florida's
67 counties.
Wakulla County is part of the Tallahassee,
Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area.
5 of the 8 county commissioners are
democratic, one is republican, and the other
is independent. So the county is mainly a
democratic one.
Main cities in Wakulla are Sopchoppy, Smith
Creek, St. Marks, Wakulla Beach, and Wakulla
Springs.

Folk and Popular Culture
One old folk story is the “Wakulla
Volcano.” The
Wakulla Volcano
was
the name given to a prominent
column of smoke, sometimes
accompanied by bright light, seen
coming from deep in the swamps of
Wakulla County, Florida, from at least
the Spanish occupation of Florida
through 1886. The scientific
assumption today is that the smoke
came from a peat fire.
Seminole Indians used to be the
dominate Native American population
in Wakulla County.
The population is dominantly
considered “redneck” or “typical
Florida cracker” due to their rich
cultural in the fishing industry and
hunting.

Language
About 4.3% of the Wakulla County population speaks a
different language other then English in their homes.
The estimated language to be spoken is Spanish, because the Hispanic/ Latino group is the next dominate race in the county
that speaks a foreign language. Also, according to the chart on the left, above
15% of Florida residents speak Spanish as the main
language.

Some major services set up in the county
are enforced in order to help with
environmental problems such as: mosquito
control, sewage treatment and disposal,
water pollution, bio-medical waste, beaches,
and animal control.
Although there are many things that concern
the population, the Environmental Health
Department of Wakulla are setting up
programs and services for the population to
make sure these problems don’t interfere
with the health of the Wakulla people.

There are about 37 different religious
congregations in Wakulla.
