Dual Education bridges the gap between theory and practice:

- Theory prepares for targeted experiential learning in practice (“sharpens the focus”) and

- Practical experience is reflected with theoretical models (“creates understanding of what has been seen”).

Through this dynamic it is possible to deepen learning experiences and to create real-life competencies that

allow students to immediately be ready for employment after graduation.

Students do not only learn the “Why?” but also the “How?”.

Dual Education means a change for all involved:

- Students have to seize the learning opportunities and engage on a level which is significantly above average engagement in traditional university studies

- Universities have to partner with companies to align theoretical teaching with the practice assignments and to compress teaching time by usage of new teaching technologies

- Companies have to identify and qualify internal “education masters” to drive the learning process of students within the companies and offer internships that are aligned with the learning targets.

History

Beihang (BUAA for short) was founded on October 25, 1952 out of the merger of the

aeronautical departments of Tsinghua University, Beiyang University, Amoy (Xiamen) University, Sichuan University, Yunnan University, Northwest Institute of Technology, College of Engineering, North China University, and Southwest Aeronautical Institute.

The school provides various disciplines, and characterized by teaching feature. The school now includes 27 colleges covering 10 disciplines: engineering, science, management,

literature, law, economics, philosophy, education, medicine and arts.

The school employs famous teachers and becomes outstanding because of these teachers. 3,759 faculties and staffs are on the job, including 2,102 full-time teachers, 1,668 professors and associate professors, 73.0% of teachers have doctorate degree.

The school cultivates talents and focuses on moral quality cultivation. There are 27,811

full-time school students including 14,428 undergraduate students, 8,700 postgraduate

students, 4,015 doctoral candidates, 668 international students who are studying for a degree at school

Pilot IC Institute at BUAA

Decided by the Chinese government (Industry and Information Ministry, Education Ministry)

Apply the German Dual Education model to tighten the connection between companies and

universities.

Graduates will be qualified both in theory and practice.

Current Status

The first batch of students has already finished three years study in IC engineering or related

majors and will graduate e.g. in Apparatus and Processing, Digital IC design or Analogue IC design.

Students will pass a basic testing of IC knowledge and then work on practice assignments in

companies.

Role of Horizon

Horizon, a China-Germany dual education JV has been assigned by BUAA to
