NetBackup 7.6

NetBackup Product Overview

Symantec NetBackup™ is an enterprise backup and recovery solution that is optimized for virtually any workload, including physical systems (operating systems), virtual systems (OS on hypervisors), storage systems (disk arrays, filers), databases, applications, and big data platforms, and delivers flexible target storage options, including appliances (including NetBackup Appliance), commodity disk, tape, and cloud. NetBackup enables companies to deploy a data protection solution with both the flexibility and scalability required to backup and recover the data, servers, and applications for midsized to extremely large companies. A typical NetBackup architecture consists of several components: clients, agents, servers, and options. Clients and agents are typically installed on the systems to be protected. NetBackup media servers instruct the clients to perform backups and direct data to target storage (appliance, disk, tape, or cloud). All of this is controlled by a NetBackup master server within a single NetBackup storage domain.

Key Features

One platform, one console unifies virtual and physical global data protection. Unified global management of snapshots, replicated snapshots, backup, and recovery. Backup and appliance integrated, scalable global dedupe across virtual and physical. V-Ray one pass backup, instant image and single file restore for virtual and physical. Automated virtual data protection and load balanced backup performance.

Key Benefits

• Unified enterprise-class virtual and physical data protection eliminates point products, offers better visibility, leverages resources, and reduces cost, complexity, and risk when virtualizing mission-critical applications.

• V-Ray lets you search and recover a single file from an image backup in minutes instead of a manual mount, search, and restore that can take hours, even days. • Simplified management and faster recovery of snapshots and replicated snapshots from anywhere in the backup environment.

• Always on protection of new, moved, or cloned VMs eliminates uncertainty and overloading of hosts during backups.

• NetBackup intelligent deduplication reduces storage costs with dedupe rates as high as 98% while optimizing backup performance and resources with flexible “end-to-end” deployment options.

NetBackup Architecture & Product Areas

From a purchasing and licensing perspective, NetBackup has four major component areas: clients, agents, servers, and options. • Clients–are placed on the systems to be protected for data storage and retrieval actions to and from the NetBackup servers.

• Agents–client-based components installed or turned on with a license key that integrate the client with specific applications (e.g. Oracle, SQL, SharePoint, Exchange, etc.) allowing application-consistent backups.

(7)

Symantec Sales Tools

Licensing and Support Services Guide

NetBackup 7.6

• Options–components installed or turned on with a license key that enable various optional features (deduplication, Accelerator, OpenStorage, NDMP, tape drive sharing, OpsCenter Analytics, etc.).

NetBackup Licensing Overview

NetBackup Licensing Models

Symantec currently offers customers two licensing models to purchase NetBackup: Platform Base model and Standard model. Customers may choose between licensing models, but cannot mix and

match license models within the same NetBackup domain.

Note that some options available in the Standard licensing model are licensed per front-end terabyte. While this is a capacity-based meter, this is different than the Platform Base model, which is a bundled offering where every piece of the solution is on the front-end terabyte meter.

NetBackup Platform Base Licensing Model

The Platform Base (or “capacity”) licensing model licenses NetBackup based on how much source data is protected. Platform Base licensing offers two editions: Complete and NDMP. The Complete Edition includes all source data being protected with no distinction regarding how the data is protected. The NDMP Edition offers a reduced licensing fee for data being backed up using NDMP.

Client: Contains the data to be protected.

Master Server: Centrally manages the NetBackup domain, and initiates all backup and recovery activity based on configured policies.

Media Server: The “data mover” that receives data from client systems and sends it to backup storage.

Storage: Where backup data is stored. These can be external (tape, VTL, cloud) or internal (within the

Licensing and Support Services Guide

NetBackup 7.6

The Platform Base model is the recommended licensing model for NetBackup. There are only two base bundles in this model, which greatly simplifies license management.

NetBackup Standard Licensing Model

The Standard (or “traditional”) licensing model is based on the number of NetBackup clients, agents, servers, and options that NetBackup will be protecting or run on. A customer purchases the same number of licenses as the count of clients, agents, servers, and options. As they deploy additional NetBackup clients or servers or attach additional tape drives or storage to NetBackup, additional licenses for appropriate NetBackup products are required.

Licensing Steps to Follow

1. Choose the licensing model.

a. Standard Licensing Model (also referred to as: traditional model, infrastructure- or component-based licensing, or a-la-carte licensing): Customers under this licensing model count the number of NetBackup servers, clients, agents, and options they would like to use and purchase the number of licenses according to the meter for that component. As they use NetBackup to protect more servers or attach additional tape drives or storage to NetBackup they must add copies of the appropriate NetBackup licenses(s). b. Platform Base Licensing Model (also referred to as: capacity model, or per-terabyte licensing): Customers under this licensing model count how much front-end data is being

protected as measured in terabytes. The Platform Base ‘bundle’ license is available in two editions: Complete and NDMP.

i. The Complete Edition includes all source data being protected in the calculation, with no distinction on how the data is protected.

ii. The NDMP Edition offers a reduced license cost for data backed up using NDMP or Replication Director (typically data that resides on certain storage systems such as NetApp). Functionality is limited to NDMP policies.

The Platform Base model is significantly easier to size, monitor, and chargeback. There are only two base bundles and a single meter. 2. Size the environment.

a. Standard Licensing Model: Count the number of infrastructure components in the environment.

i. Determine the number and type of clients. Count all the systems / applications / databases that a customer wants to protect noting the type of server hardware (i.e. tier) and operating system. There are four (4) license tiers based upon the number of CPUs installed on the client (i.e. the processing power of the machine). Many servers typically require the Standard Client. Those requiring more advanced backup methods may need the Enterprise Client. Determine how many applications and databases will need to be protected and on what systems these reside.

ii. Determine the core infrastructure components. Will the customer use NetBackup Enterprise Server, NetBackup Server, or a NetBackup Starter Pack? Most customers use NetBackup Enterprise Server in order to access more advanced features and handle scale. There are four (4) license tiers based upon the number of CPUs installed on the server (i.e. the processing power of the machine).

iii. Determine what premium features will be needed. NetBackup offers a range of optional features that are metered in different ways. For example, the NDMP Option is licensed per NAS storage system, the Shared Storage Option is licensed per shared tape drive, Replication Director is licensed per front end terabyte, etc. License the appropriate number of licenses depending on what premium features are needed and how they are metered.

(10)

Symantec Sales Tools

Licensing and Support Services Guide

NetBackup 7.6

b. Platform Base Licensing Model: Count the total amount of “front end” data that will be protected, in terabytes. Front end data is data that resides on primary systems before it is backed up. Back end data would be the amount of data that resides on backup storage after a backup is performed. Platform Base licensing does not count or track back end data.

3. Prepare the quote.

Create a summary of all clients, databases and applications to be protected (this is required regardless of which licensing model).

a. For the Standard model: Combine a summary of the appropriate infrastructure components (and required tiers) with the client component list. b. For the Platform Base model: Determine the total capacity needed and the allocation of capacity to each of the two editions.

c. For smaller customers (small to mid-market) interested NetBackup Server only, we offer a sales bundle called NetBackup Starter Packs. Additional information provided near the end of this guide.

End User License Agreement

To view a copy of the latest NetBackup End User License Agreement (EULA), please refer to the Product License Agreement page, select the Business Products tab, and scroll down to the NetBackup section.

NetBackup Platform Base Licensing Model

NetBackup Platform Base licensing is a capacity-based model using the amount of source data protected per-terabyte as the calculation meter. This model is commonly referred to as capacity licensing or Front-End Terabyte (FETB) licensing. The Platform Base model enables customers to license NetBackup based on how much source data is protected rather than the number of NetBackup clients, agents, servers, and options deployed as with Standard licensing.

The Platform Base model is beneficial to customers who currently have, or plan to deploy, advanced features of NetBackup such as Enterprise Client (V-Ray, SAN Client, etc.), Data Protection Optimization (Intelligent Deduplication, Accelerator, OST, AIR), Replication Director, OpsCenter Analytics, or Application and Database Packs. The Platform Base licensing model supports customers with multiple locations within the same domain, and customers with multiple domains as long as the total number of front-end terabytes is licensed. Customers with multiple domains also have the option of using different licensing models in each respective domain, but customers are not allowed to utilize both the Platform Base licensing model and the Standard licensing model within the same domain. Customers with more than 25 front-end terabytes are recommended to consider the VPA program.

The Platform Base licensing model offers two editions: Complete and NDMP. The Complete Edition includes all source data being protected in the capacity calculation with no distinction on how the data is being protected. The NDMP Edition offers a reduced licensing fee for data being backed up using only NDMP or Replication Director.

The Platform Base licensing model includes most but not all NetBackup features and products. NetBackup Media Server Encryption Option (MSEO) and Symantec Desktop and Laptop Option (DLO) are not included in the Platform Base licensing model and must be licensed separately. For this reason, customers can purchase MSEO and DLO within a domain that is licensed through the Platform Base licensing model.

NetBackup Platform Base Licensing Benefits

Deployment for optimal performance – with the entitlement to NetBackup limited only by the amount for front end terabytes, customers can deploy the optimal configuration and architecture. Unlimited copies – since back-end data is not metered, any number of backup copies can be created, duplicated, or replicated without incurring additional software license cost. Disaster Recovery (DR) hot sites – NetBackup infrastructure at a DR warm or hot site can be kept up and running without incurring additional license cost, as long as the infrastructure is only

used to restore data protected under Platform Base licensing.

• More economical way to obtain advanced features (e.g. Enterprise Client, Data Protection Optimization, Replication Director).

• Simplified licensing compliance – single metric to understand, track, chargeback, and comply with thus reducing cost of acquisition and license management.

• Cloud infrastructure – in cases where physical infrastructure characteristics (e.g. # of CPUs, SAN interconnects) are not measurable and therefore cannot be easily licensed using infrastructure-metered licensing, capacity-based metering provides a simpler alternative.

• Easily understood value – when offering Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS), licensing based on amount of data protected provides a simpler way to communicate value that a non-technical person can appreciate without having to explain the technology or give customers a choice between features they may not understand or appreciate.

Platform Base Features and Product Inclusion

Platform Base – Complete Edition

The Complete Edition includes the following NetBackup features and products as a part of the licensing. There is no distinction made between the source and type of protection. If the customer has a large amount of data that will be protected using NDMP, the Platform Base – NDMP Edition may be the preferred licensing mechanism.

• NetBackup Enterprise Client • NetBackup Application & DB Pack • NetBackup Search

• NetBackup Standard Client • NetBackup SAP Agent • NetBackup OpsCenter Analytics

NetBackup Enterprise Server NetBackup NDMP Option NetBackup Shared Storage Option

NetBackup Server NetBackup Vault Option • NetBackup Library Based Tape Drive

• NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Add-On • NetBackup Replication Director

Platform Base – NDMP Edition

The NetBackup 7.6 release also includes an economical licensing alternative, the NetBackup Platform Base – NDMP Edition, for the protection of file data on NAS filers using NDMP policies or NDMP data movers. It provides a reduced capacity licensing fee for customers that need to back up large amounts of data concentrated on these storage systems

(12)

Symantec Sales Tools

Licensing and Support Services Guide

NetBackup 7.6

The NDMP Edition licensing also includes the Replication Director feature for the protection of NAS filers using snapshots and replication though storage system integration. The NDMP Edition supports NDMP policy-based protection of filers as well as the use of the NDMP data mover in storage lifecycle policies. Customers requiring the flexibility of configuring Standard and/or Windows policies in addition to NDMP policies require an upgrade to the NetBackup Platform Base – Complete Edition.

The NetBackup Accelerator feature is not supported with the NDMP Edition since the Standard Client is not included in the NDMP Edition licensing. The use of NetBackup Accelerator requires the NetBackup Platform Base – Complete Edition.

The Platform Base – NDMP Edition is only available for front-end terabytes that are protected using NDMP and may not be used for any other purpose.

• NetBackup Enterprise Server • NetBackup NDMP Option • NetBackup Shared Storage Option

• NetBackup Server • NetBackup Vault Option • NetBackup Library Based Tape Drive

• NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Add-On • NetBackup OpsCenter Analytics • NetBackup Replication Director

Platform Base Licensing Requirements

Customers must be licensed for all front-end terabytes protected by NetBackup. There should be no instances where the number of front-end terabytes backed up exceeds the number of front-end terabytes licensed; in this case the customer is out of compliance and must purchase additional front end terabyte licenses. The NetBackup Platform Base license must be purchased for all front-end terabytes in the NetBackup domain.

The Platform Base – Complete Edition and the Platform Base – NDMP Edition can be utilized within the same domain or across multiple domains, as long as the total number of front-end terabytes is licensed separately for each Edition, but again, can’t mix the Platform Base licensing model and the Standard licensing model within the same domain.

Measuring Platform Base Capacity

NetBackup Platform Base model uses front-end terabyte as the licensing meter. Front-end terabyte is defined as the total aggregate amount of data on clients or storage devices on which NetBackup is installed or for which NetBackup is used to provide backup functionality.

The actual data to be protected is measured, not the capacity of storage on which it resides or the aggregate amount of data backed up to disk. Data is measured as the current largest aggregate full (or synthetic full) backup performed. A terabyte is defined as 1024 gigabytes. For example, a system with a 500GB hard drive holding 50GB of data to be protected would be measured as 50GB of Front End capacity.

You will need the following information to determine license quantity:

• Amount of front-end terabytes to be protected. Typically the software tool NBDeployUtil is used to determine this number. The tool’s latest code is available at

http://sort.symantec.com/netbackup and clicking on the ‘Capacity & Traditional License Deployment Utility’ link in the “Quick Links” box on the right. Details on using and interpreting the output of NBDeployUtil can be found in the NetBackup Administrator’s Guide, Vol. 2.

Estimated growth rate in source data.

It is recommended that a growth rate be factored into the front-end capacity estimate. For example, 50GB of data today + estimated growth of 20% a year (10 additional GBs by the end of the year) = 60 GB of front-end data to protect over the next year.

(13)

Symantec Sales Tools

Licensing and Support Services Guide

NetBackup 7.6

Notes:

The calculated number of front-end terabytes is measured using a 90-day reporting window. For a given client, the largest aggregate full (or synthetic full) backup performed within any 24-hour period during the reporting window is the calculated capacity, even if the data has been subsequently deleted.

• Database archive log backups do not increase the calculated size of the largest full database backup as long as log backups occur on different days from full database backups. If log backups are performed within the same 24-hour period as a full database backup, the total licensed capacity will equal the sum of database and log backups.

The quantity of pre-deduplicated data protected is used in the FETB calculation.

Archived data is not calculated unless it is backed up by NetBackup. If archived data is protected by NetBackup then the amount of data residing in the archive is measured. Data that is moved to another server and then immediately deleted from the original server may appear twice in NBDeployUtil reports for a period of time. Only data from the new server

location should be counted when determining license quantity. Deleted data from the original server location should disappear from NBDeployUtil reports once the 90-day reporting window is exceeded.

OpsCenter includes a license deployment report which may be used to monitor and maintain capacity compliance.

Licensing for New NetBackup Customers

Determine the total amount of source data to be protected (measured in front-end terabytes) for the term of the agreement (e.g. how much data will the customer have in 1, 2, or 3 years).

Licensing for Existing NetBackup Customers

Existing NetBackup customers may migrate the existing NetBackup Standard licenses to the NetBackup Platform Base licensing model. Customers will receive credit for all existing, eligible NetBackup licenses which have active maintenance.

NetBackup Platform Base Licensing in the Enterprise VPA Program

Symantec offers volume-based pricing for the NetBackup Platform Base licensing exclusively in the Symantec Enterprise VPA (Volume Purchase Agreement) Program. The introduction of volume based pricing will provide customers with a lower per-terabyte MSRP for larger transactions. The program offers a number of SKU/bands for different amounts of terabytes. The program includes the Platform Base – Complete Edition.

Customers must purchase using the appropriate banded SKU. The appropriate SKU contains the customer’s total terabytes purchased within the SKU’s banding. The customer then purchases X quantity of the appropriate SKU, where X represents the total number of terabytes being purchased. The customer’s total historical terabytes purchased should not be included when choosing the correct band, only terabytes being purchased in the current transaction.

Platform Base Licensing Options

NetBackup Media Server Encryption Option (MSEO)

The NetBackup Media Server Encryption Option consists of two purchased license components:

Key Management Server (KMS) for centralized and secure key management. A minimum of one Key Management Server is required. The MSEO KMS can be installed on a NetBackup system (typically the master) or can be running on a system not running NetBackup.

• The second component is the Media Server Encryption license. One Media Server Encryption license is required for each NetBackup Media or SAN media server which will encrypt data. The Media Server Encryption Option is not included in the NetBackup Platform per Terabyte licensing model, but may be added by purchasing it for each media server it will run on, plus the MSEO Key Management Server license. MSEO may only be used for tape drives and should not be proposed for LTO4, LTO5 and T10000 tape drives.

In contrast, the NetBackup KMS can be used to provide encryption keys for LTO4/5, TS1120/30/40 and T10000B/C tape drives. The tape drive vendor may require a separate license to enable the encryption functionality on the tape drive, but a customer does not need to purchase the tape drive vendor's key management server to manage the tape drive keys as NetBackup KMS would do the key management. NetBackup KMS manages keys on a per domain basis. There is no charge for using the NetBackup KMS.

NetBackup Clients

Any server that sends or receives data to a NetBackup server for protection requires a NetBackup client license. If a server is protected by multiple Master Servers, a license is required for each Master Server Domain. There are two types of NetBackup client licenses: Standard Client and Enterprise Client.

Client License Type Description

Standard Client The NetBackup Standard Client is used to protect LAN-based systems. The Standard Client includes Bare Metal Restore and Client Encryption capabilities.

Enterprise Client The NetBackup Enterprise Client contains the functionality of the Standard Client plus advanced features that provide special integration with hypervisors (e.g. VMware, Hyper-V), maximize backup performance over a storage area network (SAN), and reduce the impact of backups through off-host backups.

NetBackup Standard Client

The NetBackup Standard Client license is the economical option used to protect servers. A “server” provides services to more than one user and is considered a group or company resource controlled by a system administrator, Information Technology organization, or similar.

This license entitles customers to protect a server with a standard NetBackup client (LAN-based backup). A “standard client” license also entitles customers to use either Bare Metal Restore or NetBackup

Client Encryption capabilities.

Note: Bare Metal Restore and NetBackup Client Encryption cannot be used together.

Product Description License

NetBackup Enterprise Client

The NetBackup Enterprise Client license allows customers to use the complete range of advanced data protection features in addition to the functionality of the Standard Client. The NetBackup Enterprise Client is licensed per physical server (on a tier basis) and is ideal for providing high performance, low impact protection, especially for virtual machine hosts. Features include:

• Advanced VMware vSphere Features (V-Ray) – Agentless backup of virtual machines, granular file and application recovery, vCloud integration, Instant Recovery for VMware, VMware vStorage related features such as block-level incremental and off-host backups, as well as Accelerator for VMware (also requires Data Protection Optimization).

Advanced Microsoft Hyper-V Features (V-Ray) – Agentless backup of virtual machines, granular file recovery, off-host backup. Client-based snapshot (host or array) for file systems, applications, or databases via NetBackup Snapshot Client.

SAN-connected backups via SAN Media Server or SAN Client.

Notes:

The NetBackup Enterprise Client must be used with NetBackup Enterprise Server and cannot be used with NetBackup Server.

Refer to the NetBackup Server Tier Appendix on PartnerNet in order to select the correct server tier. To download the appendix, go to the NetBackup product page, click the Sales tab, and select the Licensing Guides section.

• For a list of supported platforms, operating systems, and snapshot methods that Snapshot Client supports for certain backup methods, please see http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH59978 for the consolidated list of compatibility guides.

NetBackup Enterprise Client SAN Media Server should not be used to backup data from networked Clients. In order to backup data from networked Clients and remote Clients to the SAN attached tape resources, a full NetBackup Enterprise Server license is required.

If two NetBackup Master Servers (i.e. two separate NetBackup domains) protect a single client, two client licenses are required, one for each domain. Additionally, if two NetBackup Master Servers are installed on a single server, two licenses are required, one for each domain.

NetBackup Agents

In addition to clients, certain applications and databases can benefit from NetBackup agents that provide additional integration at a deeper level, enabling more reliable, application-consistent recovery. These agents are optional but highly recommended.

NetBackup Application and Database Pack Option

The NetBackup Application and Database Pack is licensed per system on a tier basis, once per physical host. The NetBackup Application and Database Pack license covers all the following databases and applications:

• Oracle

• Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Active Directory • IBM DB2, IBM Lotus Notes

• Informix • Sybase

• Symantec Enterprise Vault

One Application and Database Pack is required for each physical host regardless of what types or how many instances. For example, a single server requiring agent support for both Exchange and SharePoint would require one (1) Application and Database Pack.

Application and Database Pack Option Licensing Considerations

Symantec Enterprise Vault

An Application and Database Pack license is not required for customers using NetBackup 7.6. Existing NetBackup customers can obtain this functionality by requesting a new license key for NetBackup Server or NetBackup Enterprise Server from Symantec Customer Care.

Note: A Standard or Enterprise Client license is still required.

Microsoft SharePoint

If SharePoint is deployed on a single, standalone machine, only one (1) license is required. Otherwise, for a multi-server farm, consider the following for counting licenses required: • One (1) license covers all front-end web servers, including load-balanced web servers.

• One (1) license is needed for each SQL Server. • One (1) license is needed for each Index Server. • Do not exceed one (1) license per machine.

• If the Exchange server performs a mailbox role a license is required, regardless of the other roles it may perform.

• If the Exchange server only performs a CAS role then a license is not required. The license key for an Exchange server performing a mailbox role can be used on this server. • A license is not required on an Exchange Edge Server or on an Exchange Hub Server, as these servers do not store data.

Microsoft Active Directory Services (ADS)

• Full database recovery of Active Directory Services (ADS) is included with the Standard Client license.

• The Application & Database Pack license is only required to enable granular, object-level restores of ADS objects (users, groups, computers, etc.). • One (1) Application & Database Pack license is required for each Active Directory domain that requires granular, object-level restores of ADS objects.

• Some applications are sensitive to clustering and thus need additional qualification. Agent support doesn’t imply agent support for a clustered version of the application.

NetBackup Servers

There are two server licensing components: NetBackup Enterprise Server and NetBackup Server. NetBackup Enterprise Server includes the complete set of features while NetBackup Server provides a limited feature set. The clients, agents, and options are designed to work with both versions of NetBackup except for the NetBackup Enterprise Client, which is only functional with NetBackup Enterprise Server.

Organizations that decide later to access more advanced features can easily upgrade to NetBackup Enterprise Server. New functionality is enabled by license key and doesn’t require any additional application upgrades.

NetBackup Enterprise Server

Enterprise Server contains the code for both the Master and Media Server. NetBackup Master and Media Server pricing is based on the tier of the machine. The tier of the machine is determined by the number of installed processors on the physical machine.

NetBackup Enterprise Server and NetBackup Server Licensing Considerations

Blade Servers

NetBackup components (servers, clients, agents, and options) are licensed per physical system. Therefore, each blade server will require separate NetBackup licenses. NetBackup is not licensed per rack of servers.

Cluster Environments

NetBackup licenses (servers, clients, agents, and options) are required for all nodes of a cluster. However, customers are entitled to install and use one additional copy of the licensed software per the conditions set forth in the Cold Disaster Recovery Licensing Policy. In most cases, this means that in an active-passive cluster only the active node is licensed. During a failover situation the licenses effectively transfer to the new active node.

The Master/Media Server in a NetBackup Server (two tier) configuration is only supported in a clustered environment on Windows and using Veritas Cluster Server or Microsoft Cluster Server. In this case only one NetBackup Server license is required for the active node. However, NetBackup clients, agents, and options that are attached to a NetBackup Server are supported in a clustered environment using the same clustering combinations supported with NetBackup Enterprise Server.

Refer to the NetBackup Cluster Compatibility List for a complete list of all NetBackup supported clustering products.

Disk-based Options

Basic Disk Functionality (free)

Basic disk backup in NetBackup is available at no additional charge and does not require an additional license. Basic disk backup can be used for backing up to a basic disk storage unit or for temporary staging of data before writing it to tape. Please take note that Storage Lifecycle Policies cannot be used with basic disk.

Exception: Backups to any storage target that performs deduplication requires Data Protection Optimization Option licensed for the total number of front-end terabytes being protected.

NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option (DPOO)

NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option is designed to provide a set of NetBackup features geared towards enhancing data protection by optimizing storage requirements, network bandwidth usage, impact on client systems etc. This is a license bundle that provides all the features listed below.

(25)

Symantec Sales Tools

Licensing and Support Services Guide

NetBackup 7.6

Enterprise Disk Option has been discontinued in NetBackup 7.6. For customers using Standard licensing model, NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option includes all of the features that were formerly available through Enterprise Disk Option, including Storage Life Cycle Policies, Media Server Load Balancing, Virtual Tape, and OpenStorage connectivity.

NetBackup Intelligent Deduplication Feature

All intelligent deduplication features provided by NetBackup are part of the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option license. Both client- and target-based deduplication features are included. Starting in NetBackup 7.6, the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option replaced the NetBackup Deduplication Option. Customers who have NetBackup Deduplication Option from previous NetBackup versions are entitled to use the same quantity of the new Data Protection Optimization Option licenses at no additional cost in both standard and platform per-terabyte licensing models.

NetBackup Accelerator Feature

The NetBackup Accelerator feature is included in the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option license. The NetBackup Accelerator feature requires sending backups to a disk pool that supports NetBackup Optimized Synthetics technology. A NetBackup intelligent deduplication pool, NetBackup Cloud-store pool or compatible OpenStorage pool is required, which is included with the Data Protection Optimization Add-on license.

NetBackup OpenStorage (OST) Feature

The OpenStorage integration feature enables advanced access and control of qualified third-party intelligent disk devices (typically appliances). Hardware appliance vendors provide a software OST “plug-in” that conforms to the NetBackup OpenStorage API and enables communication between NetBackup and the vendor device. These must be qualified by Symantec to be supported. The exact functionality offered by each vendor will vary based on what they have written into their OST plug-in.

OST integration also enables NetBackup to utilize cloud storage offered by various cloud service providers such as Amazon, Rackspace, and AT&T. The cloud storage plug-in is installed on the NetBackup media server that connects to the cloud storage solution.

An example of functionality provided by the OpenStorage feature is the integration with NetBackup through a popular feature called OpenStorage Optimized Duplication (Op-Dupe). With OpenStorage Optimized Duplication, NetBackup is able to manage and control the duplication of backups written to an OST device using the intelligent device’s native replication capabilities. Data moves directly between OST devices under NetBackup control. The NetBackup catalog remains aware of both the primary and remote backups stored on the OST devices. Backup retentions are maintained through the normal backup lifecycle process.

OpenStorage also supports Optimized Synthetics, which is required for Accelerator. Check with the specific vendor to verify this feature is supported with their OST plug-in. OpenStorage integration includes the following OST partners:

EMC Data Domain IBM Amazon Web Services

ExaGrid NEC Rackspace CloudFiles

FalconStor HP AT&T Synaptic Storage

Fujitsu Quantum Dell

Auto Image Replication (AIR) Feature

The Auto Image Replication feature is a part of the Storage Lifecycle Policies feature and requires the Data Protection Optimization Option license for both the source and target domains.

Customers, under the Standard licensing policy, are required to purchase the applicable infrastructure licenses for the master and media servers in the source and target domains for using Auto Image Replication. Licensing for the target domain is required even if that domain is a dedicated Disaster Recovery domain. This is because the target domain master and media servers must be active at all times and are not in “idle” mode as mandated by the Cold Disaster Recovery policy.

Data Protection Optimization Option licensing is based on front-end terabytes, so there is no additional cost for DPOO licenses at the target domain, however all other infrastructure licenses including servers, library tape drives, and shared storage option are required at the target domain.

Note: If the Auto Image Replication target domain is a dedicated Disaster Recovery site then under the Platform Base licensing model there is no license charge for any of the target domain components.

Auto Image Replication image volume is not included in FETB capacity sizing since a customer may have any number of copies of the protected data as needed, without incurring extra license charges. This is one of the benefits of the Platform Base license model.

NetBackup Virtual Tape Feature

NetBackup Virtual Tape feature enables support for 3rd party virtual tape offerings. Supports unlimited number of virtual tape drives.

Includes sharing of virtual tape drives; no SSO license required.

A list of NetBackup supported virtual tape libraries can be located on the NetBackup Hardware Compatibility Matrix.

Determining License Quantity

You will need the following information to determine license quantity: • Number of servers / systems to be protected.

• Number of applications / databases and tier of machine on which each one runs. • Amount of front-end terabytes to be protected.

• Estimated growth rate in source data.

Licensing for the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option is based on the amount of front-end data to be protected on source systems (front-end terabyte). If a media server is used as part of the configuration, a NetBackup Enterprise Server or NetBackup Server license is required.

(27)

Symantec Sales Tools

Licensing and Support Services Guide

NetBackup 7.6

The use of NetBackup Accelerator with third-party OpenStorage devices requires that the OpenStorage partner provides a qualified plug-in. OST plug-ins are typically available asynchronously from the NetBackup release. Be sure to check that the OpenStorage device is qualified for NetBackup Accelerator support before quoting Data Protection Optimization Option for use with third party OpenStorage devices.

Customers using third-party OpenStorage partner storage devices that have deduplication capabilities that want to take advantage of the NetBackup Accelerator performance advantages must license the NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Option.

Calculating Front-End Terabyte Capacity

A front-end terabyte is defined as the total aggregate amount of data on clients or storage devices on which NetBackup is installed or for which NetBackup is used to provide backup functionality.

It is recommended that a growth rate should be factored into the front-end capacity estimate. For example, 50GB of data today + estimated growth of 20% a year (10 additional GBs by the end of the year) = 60 GB of front-end data to protect over the next year.

Product Description License

NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Per 1 Front End TB

Notes:

• Customers who had purchased Enterprise Disk Option and had active maintenance were upgraded to Data Protection Optimization Option with the release of NetBackup 7.6. • Customers who had purchased Flexible Disk, Virtual Tape, or OpenStorage Options and had active maintenance were upgraded to Enterprise Disk in September 2008. Each customer

received 1 Front-End TB of Enterprise Disk for every Virtual TB of Flexible Disk, Virtual Tape and OpenStorage. Enterprise Disk is no longer provided in pricelists; customers seeking to buy this are now required to buy the Data Protection Optimization Option.

NetBackup Replication Director Option

NetBackup Replication Director Option provides unified, policy-based management of backups, snapshots and replication. Replication Director is licensed by front-end terabytes (FETB) being protected. One NetBackup Replication Director license is required for every front-end terabyte that is protected with array-based snapshots. Any number of replications is allowed since only front-end capacity is counted.

Any related use of Snapshot Client capabilities is included in the licensing, and does not require an Enterprise Client license. Duplication of snapshots to disk or tape for backup or disaster recovery may require additional licenses, e.g. Library Based Tape Drive, DPOO (deduplication).

Exception: Duplication to tape using the NDMP Option is included with Replication Director.

Tape-based Options

NetBackup Library Based Tape Drive

NetBackup support for physical tape drives controlled by a robotic library is licensed per physical tape drive; regardless of the manufacturer, type of device, or number of servers attached to the library. There is no charge for stand-alone, non-robotic tape drives directly attached to a NetBackup Master/Media Server or NetBackup Server. Refer to the Data Protection Optimization Option for licensing of virtual tape libraries (VTLs).

Product Description License

NetBackup Library Based Tape Drive Per Robotic Controlled Tape Drive

Note:

• For an updated list of both supported tape drives and libraries, please refer to the NetBackup Hardware Compatibility Matrix.

NetBackup Shared Storage Option

NetBackup Shared Storage Option dynamically shares individual tape drives, standalone or in a robotic tape library, among multiple NetBackup Media Servers and/or NDMP hosts (servers). These servers can be a NetBackup Master Server, NetBackup Media Server, or NetBackup SAN Media Server.

NetBackup Shared Storage Option is licensed per shared tape drive, regardless of the manufacturer, type of device, or number of NetBackup Servers attached to the SAN. Sharing of each physical tape drive among NetBackup Media Servers and/or NDMP hosts (servers) requires an SSO license for that tape drive. The NetBackup Shared Storage Option license is in addition to any required NetBackup Library Based Tape Drive licenses. If the shared tape drive is not included in a tape library, then only a Shared Storage Option license is required. The Shared Storage Option is not needed when used with the NetBackup Virtual Tape Option (included in Data Protection Optimization Option).

Product Description License

NetBackup Shared Storage Option Per Shared Drive

Notes:

Shared Storage Option maintains an “open” support policy for all SAN equipment. To ensure reliability and performance, all servers must recognize the drives, via the SAN, before installation of NetBackup software.

NetBackup 7.6

NetBackup Vault Option

NetBackup Vault requires a license for each physical tape drive in physical tape libraries used as the source or destination for Vaulting. NetBackup Vault is licensed per NetBackup Storage Domain (i.e. one NetBackup Enterprise Master Server or NetBackup Server) and includes four NetBackup Vault physical tape drive licenses.

If more than four physical tape drives are used in the libraries for deduplication purposes, a NetBackup Vault Additional Drive license would be required for each drive. A NetBackup Vault Unlimited Drive license provides support for unrestricted number of drives per NetBackup Storage Domain (recommended if the library has more than 24 drives).

The Storage Lifecycle Policy feature (part of Data Protection Optimization Option) can be used for duplicating backup images from one tape library to another one, instead of using NetBackup Vault for duplication. If this is done, only the physical tape drives in the library ejecting tapes to be sent off-site and managed by NetBackup Vault would require NetBackup Vault tape drive licenses.

• The unlimited drive SKU includes the base NetBackup Vault license.

• ALL physical tape drives in a library used for vaulting require a NetBackup Vault license.

When a VTL is the primary NetBackup storage and a customer wishes to run a duplication job to physical tape for offsite storage, the customer must have an appropriate tape drive licenses. NetBackup Vault Additional Drive licenses are not required when only one copy of the backup is being created and vaulted.

Product Description License

NetBackup Vault Base Per Master Server / Server and (4) Physical Tape Drives

NetBackup Vault Additional Drive Per Additional Physical Tape Drive in Vault Library

NetBackup Vault Unlimited Drives (w/ Base) Per Master Server / Server (Storage Domain)

Note:

• Licensing 24 physical tape drives for NetBackup Vault is equal to the price of the Unlimited Drives license. Therefore, it is recommended to sell the NetBackup Vault Unlimited Drive license if the customer has over 24 physical tape drives that will be used for vaulting purposes.

Management Options

NetBackup OpsCenter Analytics Option

There are two packages of OpsCenter: Standard and Analytics. The Standard OpsCenter functionality and reports are included with all NetBackup licensing. The customer is able to deploy OpsCenter within their environment as needed.

The base OpsCenter product and applicable support is available for customers who have a valid NetBackup license and corresponding support contract. No support will be provided customer without a valid NetBackup license.

(30)

Symantec Sales Tools

NetBackup 7.6

OpsCenter Analytics Option is builds on the OpsCenter standard features. OpsCenter Analytics enables advanced reporting capabilities such as a custom report builder and the ability to write custom SQL queries on the OpsCenter database. Furthermore, OpsCenter Analytics enables customer to access the entire history of their backup information. The base OpsCenter product limits customers to a 60-day window into their backup history.

Determining License Quantity

An OpsCenter Analytics license is required for every physical client with an active backup policy. The client count should include all hosts which may include master and media servers as well if they are being backed up. The rule of thumb is that if you are backing it up, you need an OpsCenter Analytics client to report on it.

Product Description License

Note:

• Please refer to the latest Operating System Compatibility List for supported platforms and web browsers.

NetBackup Search Option

NetBackup Search Option provides the ability to search and hold information across the entire backup environment while reducing the associated costs and time requirements of responding to legal requests on backup data. NetBackup Search uses an indexing facility to indexes the NetBackup catalog metadata and allow users to quickly find file related information.

Determining License Quantity

NetBackup Search license is required for every client that can be searched. Searchable clients are identified by OpsCenter using the data collection process across multiple NetBackup domains. All identified searchable clients must be licensed. This licensed count from the license key (license limit) is reconciled against the clients indexed (current usage) and is displayed in the Search and Hold tab in OpsCenter.

The following are data types NetBackup can search:

• All Windows based file systems including VMware & Hyper-V backups. • All Unix/Linux based file systems including VMware & Hyper-V backups.

The NetBackup Search license includes NetBackup OpsCenter Analytics. A cross-grade SKU is available for current OpsCenter Analytics customers who would like to utilize the value of their OpsCenter licenses towards the purchase of NetBackup Search.
