AN EVOLUTIONARY APPROACH TO TRAINING
Lighting technology is changing fast and your firm’s success is based on your ability to keep up and stay ahead of the curve. Formal, face-to-face training can often be laborious, time-consuming, and expensive—but what if: • An on-demand, online tool were available to train you or your staff in the basics of light and lighting as well as on the transition from traditional technologies to solid state lighting (LEDs)?
• The tool incorporated engaging hands-on activities, workbook exercises, and real-life opportunities that you or your staff could apply immediately to your daily work?
• That tool further included an in-house coaching program, online quizzes, and a final exam designed to ensure that you or your staff can retain and use what you’ve learned?
If you’re ready to take the lead in today’s dynamic and lucrative lighting upgrade market, let the newly-revised NAILD LS I Certificate Training Program help light the way!
THE TRAINING DILEMMA: RESOLVED
If you’re like many of today’s lighting distributors, vendors, and lighting manufacturers, you likely face the following dilemma when it comes to training:
• Your firm doesn’t have the financial resources or personnel to design, develop, and deliver a systematic training program to your employees
• Your firm doesn’t have the budget to fund offsite training for employees or the cost of staff coverage until they return • These circumstances have resulted in spotty, inconsistent, and ad hoc training – or none at all
Add to this the rapid growth of and demand for solid state lighting (LED) in today’s market—customers need to know what to do and how to choose LED products and they’re looking to you for this expertise. With over ten years of experience in providing the industry’s most expert lighting training, NAILD’s renowned Lighting Specialist I Certificate Training Program offers the following program highlights:
• A brand-agnostic training program covering the basics of light and lighting that will help you understand today’s current and future lighting technologies so that you can speak to customers about them with competence and confidence • An easily-accessible, online format that’s available on-demand
• Opportunities to practice what you’ve learned using dedicated workbook exercises and hands-on activities that augment online content
• A unique in-house coach/mentor component specially-designed to support the learning process, as well as online quizzes and a final exam to document knowledge transfer and real-life application to your daily work • A ‘Certificate of Completion’ and an LS I pin upon successful completion of the program as well as recognition of the student’s completed status within NAILD’s monthly publication, Today’s Lighting Distributor, and authorization to use the elite NAILD LS I appellation in their professional communications (business cards, etc.) and with customers • A program that will help everybody in your firm sell lighting—from the receptionist to operations, sales, and warehouse personnel – and contribute to top-line sales and margin enrichment.

An overview of the LS I course, how the course will help you transition from traditional sources to LED, and the key role played by electrical distributors and other lighting professionals in today’s dynamic lighting upgrade market.
MODULE 2: INTRODUCTION TO SOURCES
An overview of the major light sources, an introduction to key lighting terms, and an opportunity to identify the light sources in a variety of lit spaces.
MODULE 3: LIGHT AND COLOR
A discussion of the nature of light, how humans see light and color, and how lighting influences our experience of color, with a special section on LEDs and color.
MODULE 4: HOW WE SEE
A review of the parts of the human eye and the role they play in helping us to see, as well as a discussion of the limitations of the eye and circumstances that restrict our ability to perform visual tasks. Includes a discussion on how LEDs might affect brightness perception.

MODULE 8: TRANSITION: HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE (HID) TO LED
A discussion of the various HID sources, when to use them, and how they stack up against LEDs in a variety of indoor and outdoor applications, as well as a review of key issues such as lighting control and measurement of lumens.

LEADING WITH LIGHTING: THE INDUSTRY SPEAKS
“Our company uses LS I as training for all of our new hires because the program breaks things down into small, manageable bites that you can focus on. It takes incoming sales people with no experience to the point where they can talk to customers technically and accurately about lighting. I’ve been in the lighting industry for six years and it is a great course for people who have been in lighting for a while, like me, because it helps familiarize you with all aspects of the technology and connects a lot of dots.”
Alison Hayes, Inside Sales, Pacific Lamp Supply Co. (Seattle, WA)
“LS I covers all of the basics, from ballasts to lamps to LEDs, in an easy-to-use online for-mat that’s great for distributors, contractors, and manufacturers’ reps. We’ve had a number of employees complete it and have found that the LS I program has taken them from just doing their job to having the confidence to help sell lamps and other components as well, which has been an unanticipated benefit. We’re putting all of our new people through the training because it takes a user’s proficiency from 0-10 quickly and affordably.”
Kevin Eagan, Co-Owner, Northwest Lighting Systems (Burnsville, MN)
“I had been in lighting for three years when I took the LS I course; it provided a thorough overview and is a great way to introduce someone to the industry. It takes a while to get comfortable with lighting, but this course can really help shortcut the process. I had been to several manufacturer-sponsored training programs in the past, but LS I was by far the best lighting training I have taken. I took the course at my own pace and it gave me a good background for the entire lighting industry, not just from the perspective of any one manu-facturer’s offering. It’s the best lighting training option out there for new hires and is also a great refresher for people who have been in the industry for a while.”

LEADING WITH LIGHTING: THE INDUSTRY SPEAKS
“LS I is immersive learning that’s academic, hands-on, and experiential at the same time. It’s ideal for distributors who want to fast-track their personnel and bring them up to speed quickly in order to differentiate themselves in the field of lighting, but it’s also wonderful for manufacturers and contractors as well as beginners and intermediate-level personnel – anyone who will be hands-on with lighting would benefit tremendously from this program. It has a unique coaching mechanism and holds students accountable for their understand-ing so that they don’t fall through the cracks. It’s great technical information presented in an affordable and user-friendly package.”
Wendell Strong, Sales Manager, Voss Lighting (Des Moines, IA)
“I’ve been in the electrical distribution industry for over 30 years and I took the LS I program in Summer 2013 so that I could coach our team of seven sales and counter people through it and translate for them. We reserved every Friday afternoon from 1-5 p.m. to cover a module and it was a wonderful experience—our degree of bonding and brainstorming was great, not something we’d ever done before. Our staff was excited to complete the program and they were able to put their knowledge to use immediately and feel more confident when consulting with customers. Overall, it’s a great, well-paced, hands-on course that provides people in sales or any type of position with a great basic knowledge of lighting.”
Melony Craig, Sales Manager, Tecno Lite (Carolina, Puerto Rico)
“I took LS I in 2012 and it was a great primer for the lighting industry that gave me a superior understanding of light sources and systems. I sell fixtures, but thanks to LS I, I ended up knowing more about light sources than some colleagues of mine who’d been in the industry for a long time. When given a project, LS I helps you provide greater value for customers – for example, the course helped me build credibility by enabling me to help specifiers meet watts-per-square-foot requirements with greater understanding. Manufac-turer sales people selling to distributors can definitely benefit from this program.”
Phillip Ruane, District Sales Representative, Specification, Philips Lighting (Columbia, MD)
