From Father Brian’s Desk

A Welcome Return

It was great to see a number of people return to church on Ash Wednesday as we began the season of Lent! Both church sites were illed to capacity at the Masses and Prayer Services and there was a constant low of people who attended the “Walk-Up Distribution of Ashes” in the morning and evening times. We were actually wondering if we were going to run out of Q-Tips on Ash Wednesday night… It is also very encouraging to witness numerous parishioners return to Weekend and Weekday Masses in the last month. I know that it has been a long journey since March 2020 and I know many people are ready to return to our churches. With the number of parishioners returning to Masses, I would like to encourage people to think about a couple of things.

First, we would all appreciate it if there was an increase in volunteers as ministers. We really need Greeters/Ushers at all of the Masses to welcome people to church and guide them to and from their seats. While it is not a complicated job, it is a crucial role to our liturgies. If you are able to assist us even just once or twice a month, it would be a great help. Please contact us at the Parish Of ice at (630) 257-2414 if you can volunteer as a Greeter/Usher.

Second, I would like to encourage everyone to please make your reservations for the Weekend Masses. We have noticed in the past couple of weeks that some people believe that they can simply walk up to attend Mass. Until we receive an update from the Archdiocese of Chicago, we still have to make a reservation for all liturgies. While it is not convenient, reservations for Mass are still necessary for safety reasons. Thank you for your consideration.

7:30 a.m. Daily Morning Mass

How are we called to

repentance today?

During Lent, we focus on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving which are all related to repentance, forgiveness, and penance.

The examen is one of the most powerful practices of repentance for spiritual growth. In a nutshell, the daily examen is a practice popularized by St. Ignatius of Loyola in which you set aside fifteen or twenty minutes a day to prayerfully “examine” your day to see where God was present, and to discern how God is calling you to grow. Practicing a regular examen is a great way to prepare for receiving the sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation too!

Focus for Second Week of Lent: Stories of Hope from Madagascar

We all need food to nourish us and keep us healthy. Without food, we find it hard to concentrate, study, do our work or even play. Jesus often shared meals with friends and even strangers, and he teaches us to be generous in sharing what we have to eat with others.

What is your favorite show or movie? Why do you like it? Has it taught you anything new or interesting? In Madagascar, families gather to watch puppet shows that entertain and teach. They love seeing the brightly colored puppets talk to each other, tell stories and ask the crowd questions. After each show, parents leave with new information to help their families.

Half of all children in Madagascar are undernourished, meaning they don’t have enough nutritious food to stay healthy. Parents want their children to grow up healthy and strong, and the puppet shows give them new knowledge they can use right away to make sure that happens. Community health workers trained by CRS use the puppets to teach families about how doctor visits, hand washing and rainbow foods—different colored foods like tomatoes and carrots that have important vitamins and nutrients—are necessary to stay healthy.

Meatless Meals from Around the World

Each Friday of Lent, we abstain from eating meat as a way to experience a little of the hunger that many experience daily. Journey with us around the world and incorporate these Lenten recipes into your meatless Fridays. Give the money you saved each week by not eating meat—about $3 per person per meal—to your CRS Rice Bowl to feed those in need around the world.

READINGS FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

A reading from the Book of Genesis Genesis 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18 / 26 God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am!” he replied. Then God said: “Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you.”

When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. Then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son. But the Lord’s messenger called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Here I am!” he answered. “Do not lay your hand on the boy,” said the messenger. “Do not do the least thing to him. I know now how devoted you are to God, once you did not withhold from me your own beloved son.” As Abraham looked about, he spied a ram caught by its horns in the thicket. So he went and took the ram and offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son.

Again the Lord’s messenger called to Abraham from heaven and said: “I swear by myself, declared the Lord, that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your beloved son, I will bless you abundantly and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore; your descendants shall take possession of the gates of their enemies, and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing - all this because you obeyed my command.”

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 116:10 and 15, 16-17, 18-19 R. I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.

I trusted, even when I said, “I am sorely afflicted.” How precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. R. I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.

Your servant, Lord, your servant am I, the son of your handmaid; you have loosened my bonds. A thanksgiving sacrifice I make; I will call on the name of the Lord.

R. I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.

My vows to the Lord I will fulfill before all his people, in the courts of his house of the Lord, in your midst, O Jerusalem. R. I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.

A reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans Romans 8:31b-34 Brothers and sisters: If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all how will he not also give us everything else along with him?

Who will bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who acquits us, who will condemn? Christ Jesus it is who died - or, rather, was raised - who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark Mark 9:2-10 Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart

by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, “This is my belove Son. Listen to him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them.

As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.
