This rapidly growing department specialises in Sport and Exercise Science courses and the interface of these with athletes, coaches and an exercising population.

Benefiting from rising numbers of staff, along with expanding facilities and state-of-the-art equipment, we have been able to offer well-resourced and comprehensive degree courses. These courses reflect the latest developments within the sport, health and leisure industries.

A centre of excellence for the region

The Department of Sport, Health and Exercise Science has teamed up with the Hull York Medical School (HYMS) to develop a centre for sporting and scientific excellence. A state-of-the-art Health and Human Performance Laboratory provides support for sportsmen, sportswomen, their coaches and their fitness advisers, and for the study of the sport and exercise sciences in the broadest sense. The laboratory already offers a full range of sport science

support, including fitness and performance profiling, biomechanical analysis, lifestyle and psychological counselling, performance analysis, rehabilitation and other medical support, as well as various coach education programmes.

Recognised quality

Our degrees are certified and approved by the country’s leading national bodies in the discipline. Skills Active and Sports Coach UK, for example, endorses our degree in Sports Coaching and Performance, while our Sport Rehabilitation

programme is accredited by the British Association of Sports Rehabilitators and Trainers.

Supporting local sport

We aim to provide sport science support to local performers, including those involved in the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme, both at the elite level and for those aspiring to elite performance. This support is delivered at our sport science laboratories and at local sporting clubs. The Department has forged a number of productive links with local professional sports clubs, including Hull City Football Club and Hull Kingston Rovers Rugby League Club.

The Department also strives to develop community links through coach education programmes offered

within local facilities. We enjoy links with Local Authority Sports Development units in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire, and with the Humber Sports Partnership (our local County Sports Partnership), as well as relationships with a range of governing bodies and private providers including the Rugby Football Union, the Rugby Football League, the East Riding County Football Association and First Step Sports, and a range of local school partnerships. These links with sporting clubs and associations provide you with additional scope to develop practical skills and to gain experience of working as a sport scientist, sports coach or sports rehabilitator.

The great advantage of the sports facilities at Hull is that they are on the main campus, within five minutes’ walk of the students’ union, all departments, and the Cranbrook Avenue and Taylor Court student accommodation.

The Sports and Leisure Centre

The attractively designed Sports and Leisure Centre has three floors, which incorporate a large sports hall, a gymnasium equipped with weights and a multi-gym, a dance and aerobics studio, six squash courts, a solarium and a physical education lecture room. Attached to the main Sports and Leisure Centre is a new Health and Fitness Centre.

The Health and Fitness Centre

The new state-of-the-art Health and Fitness Centre, in which the University invested half a million pounds, is professionally supervised and incorporates

a suite of strength and fitness training machines for individual muscle groups, a cardiovascular room containing a range of aerobic training equipment (including powerjogs, ‘steppers’ and cycle ergometers), a sauna, a jacuzzi, a solarium and a bar plus snack and relaxation areas.

The sports grounds

Adjacent to the Sports and Leisure and Health and Fitness Centres are the University’s major sports grounds, including a floodlit all-weather surface which conforms to FIH and EHA hockey specifications but which is also available for football and general sports training, a new floodlit netball and tennis complex, six football pitches, three rugby pitches, two grass hockey pitches, an American football pitch, a lacrosse pitch, four cricket circles, eight clay tennis courts and a grid training area. The University also has a boathouse on the nearby River Hull, used by the Rowing and Canoe Clubs.

Additional facilities in Hull

and Yorkshire

Within a short drive of the University are several swimming pools, a National League athletics stadium, an indoor tennis centre, an ice skating/hockey stadium, an indoor rock-climbing centre, and an outdoor centre for water-based adventure activities such as sailing, canoeing and windsurfing. Within an hour’s drive are the North York Moors and the Pennines, offering opportunities for orienteering, expedition training, climbing and other land-based outdoor and adventurous activities.

The Athletic Union

The University’s Athletic Union administers 56 clubs catering for a wide range of individual and team sports; and outdoor and adventurous activities are supported by an experienced full-time member of staff responsible for leadership and safety.

‘I liked the fact that studying gave me

a break from playing and vice versa.

I love playing rugby, but I know that

it’s not for ever – and I knew even at

school that I’d need a career when my

playing days were over.’

‘I really loved my course too. The

lecturers and other students are like

one big family, and I enjoyed the

hands-on nature of my studies. I also

believe that my degree could work

well with my rugby career – I could

provide sports rehab support for my

club on days when I’m not playing or

training.’

‘Juggling a degree and a burgeoning

playing career required discipline

and understanding from both sides.

Thankfully, Hull FC and the University

were brilliantly supportive.’

‘When I was at Hull FC, the club were

happy for me to come to university for

classes on the days I needed to, even

if there was a clash with a training

session; and the University allowed

me an extension on my work when I

was chosen to play for the first team.’

COURSE CONTENT

The Department of Sport, Health and Exercise Science at the University of Hull offers courses of study leading to BSc Single Honours degrees in Sport and Exercise Science, in Sport Rehabilitation and in Sports Coaching and Performance. You can also read BSc Psychology with Sport Science.

The Department has established clear aims and objectives for each course of study, including both specific and generic components. If this brochure leaves you wanting to know more about the course specifications, please visit our website at: www.hull.ac.uk/sportscience

BSc Sport and Exercise Science

‘They think it’s all over …’ But for you, it could be the beginning of an exciting study programme leading to a career in the expanding world of sport and exercise. At the University of Hull, sport is advancing at a vigorous pace, and you could be part of this development. With high-quality sports facilities, new and well-equipped sport science laboratories and staff of the highest calibre, you experience probably one of the best sport science courses in the UK.

The BSc in Sport and Exercise Science is scientifically rigorous, in line with other degree courses around the country, and reflects our position within the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

In Year 1 you undertake basic studies in the core areas of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology and research methods. In Years 2 and 3 you explore the applications of such disciplines in both sport science and health/exercise science. You study the acute and chronic effects of exercise, sport and exercise nutrition, and ageing and obesity, as well as performance analysis and muscle dynamics.

Through your three years of study you are given the opportunity to acquire and develop a range of knowledge and skills through modules such as Exercise Physiology, Sports Biomechanics and Health and Exercise Psychology. You become part of a vibrant and supportive department whose ethos is strongly directed towards a holistic student experience combining both academic and personal achievements.

From Year 2, you have the opportunity to select a number of modules that enable you to tailor your course to suit your strengths and career aspirations.

(13)

The University of Hull 2015 | 11 Sport, Health and Exercise Science

BSc Sport Rehabilitation

Sport rehabilitation is a health care profession which is relatively new to the UK (being introduced in 1994) and was established at the University of Hull in 2004. Successful graduates from this programme may be eligible to join the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT) as practicing members who are fully insured.

Undergraduate training provides the necessary hands-on skills, knowledge and expertise to undertake accurate assessment and diagnosis of musculoskeletal injuries, followed by the appropriate rehabilitation techniques. Our graduates are trained solely in sports and exercise rehabilitation, with an emphasis on both health and disease.

The programme incorporates subjects such as applied neuromusculoskeletal anatomy, physiology and biomechanics as well as manual therapy, electrotherapy, remedial exercise, end-stage rehabilitation and injury prevention.

The training provides the Graduate Sport Rehabilitator (GSR) with all the necessary skills to become an autonomous health care professional providing accurate injury assessment, remedial therapy, injury prevention

and staged rehabilitation to get the client back to their maximum performance in the shortest time possible. University learning is consolidated by a minimum of 400 hours of clinical placement in the work environment – for example with sport clubs, private practitioners and in occupational health.

Inclusive learning ensures that there is close personal contact between staff and students. Lectures are supported by tutorials, seminars and practical sessions which utilise dedicated resources such as the sport rehabilitation suite and sport injury clinic together with the excellent on-site sporting facilities.

BSc Sports Coaching and Performance

The BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Performance programme is specifically designed for those wanting to pursue a career in the coaching of children, adolescents or adults across all levels of abilities. This course may also be of interest to those wishing to pursue a career in the teaching of Physical Education. In 2011, the course was professionally accredited by Sports Coach UK and Skills Active. It is one of the first higher education courses in the UK to have met these industry standards. The programme principally seeks to develop

theoretically informed and critically self-reflective coaching practitioners. While the course focuses on the study of sports coaching, you also acquire a range of leadership, communication, data handling and critical thinking skills that are beneficial in a wide range of professional careers.

The modules on this programme are delivered by experts within the field of sports science and coaching. The department also works closely with community partners to ensure that the programme meets the needs of the local community and provides you with relevant opportunities to acquire work placements and National Governing Body of Sport coaching awards.

Other Honours

BSc Psychology with Sport Science

You spend approximately 70% of your time studying psychology (including sport and exercise psychology) and 30% studying sport science. In sport science you have the opportunity to select from both ‘pure’ and ‘applied’ modules.

(14)

12 | The University of Hull 2015

Sport, Health and Exercise Psychology

The modules that make up this strand examine the contribution that psychology can make to our understanding of sport/exercise participation and performance and to our understanding of human cognition and behaviour in sport. They focus on the psychology in sport psychology and offer an in-depth understanding of the athlete and exerciser.

Anatomy and Human Physiology

These units aim to introduce the basic anatomy of joints and muscles and include consideration of the physiology of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, kidney and fluid balance and the nervous system. Year 2 and 3 modules examine such topics as the biochemistry of exercise and the mechanisms that control energy metabolism.

Research methods

These modules aim firstly, to develop an understanding of research design, methodology and analysis using qualitative and quantitative approaches. They include work in experimental and descriptive methodologies and involve the application

of statistical tests and forms of survey method with real data. Later modules provide the skills to conduct empirical studies of individuals and groups.

Introduction to Coaching Pedagogy

This strand explores the teaching and learning process in sport – an issue that is fundamental to coaching success, whether in elite or recreational, adult or junior settings – and examines the complex nature of pedagogical practice in coaching. As well as analysing different theoretical positions, you apply this knowledge in a practical coaching setting and reflect on your own learning and development as a coach.

Analysis of Human movement

The biomechanics thread running through Years 1, 2 and 3 introduces you to the analysis of human movement in sport and health. The first module considers the application of functional anatomy to movement analysis. In Years 2 and 3, you develop a fuller understanding of movement technique analysis in various sports and examine performance factors using film and force analysis. In Year 3, you also have the option of conducting biomechanical analysis of movement from a clinical perspective.

The city of Hull is in East Yorkshire, on the north bank of the Humber Estuary. A gateway to Europe and beyond, it has strong global transport connections as well as good road and rail links to other major UK cities.

Scarborough, a picturesque seaside town, is situated on the North Yorkshire coast, and is within an hour's drive of York and only 40 miles from the University's Hull campus.

By road, the M62 puts Hull on the national motorway network. By rail, direct trains between Hull and London take as little as two-and-a-half hours.

By sea, daily overnight passenger ferries run from the city’s port to Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Zeebrugge in Belgium.

And by air, Hull is served by international airports including nearby Humberside Airport, which has direct flights to Europe and a global reach via Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport; Robin Hood Airport in South Yorkshire; Leeds Bradford Airport in West Yorkshire; and Manchester Airport.

Transparent costing policy

The University of Hull believes in transparency regarding costs incurred by students studying for its awards. We will clearly identify mandatory costs which arise from undertaking a programme and/or its core modules. The costs of all compulsory field trips and of all field trips at Level 4 (typically the first year) of a programme will be free of charge, as will essential equipment. We will be clear in our information about necessarily incurred costs (e.g. living costs, accommodation, parking and so on) associated with studying at the University and will provide clear guidance in our information about what these are likely to be. A further category is optional costs which may arise from particular module choices. Though optional, these costs may nonetheless by seen by students as necessary if they are to do well on a programme or to get the most out of it, and as such will be made transparent and easily accessible.
