Agil

ent Remote Management Processor 3.0 (RMP 3.0)

The Agilent RMP 3.0 is the first chip in a new generation of Remote Management solutions: With its new generation of remote management chips, Agilent is able to provide the most powerful remote management solution ever in a single-chip service processor.

The new RMP 3.0 allows OEMs to provide leading-edge remote man-agement solutions in any PCI-based computer system at minimal costs and minimal space requirement. The RMP 3.0 offers new features like Remote Disk and fast AVR making it the perfect fit for today's server designs.

A New Era of Remote Management

The Agilent RMP is the first product of the next generation of remote management solu-tions to provide more power-ful, reliable and feature-rich remote management solutions. The RMP combines a complete Baseboard Management

Controller and a fully- featured Remote Management solution in an extremely dense package. In addition to the RMP, only memory and some small com-ponents are needed.

This makes the RMP 3.0 the perfect Remote Management and BMC Solution for today's servers. The RMP 3.0 allows OEMs to integrate a complete BMC and Remote Management solution into their servers,

24/7 Availability

The RMP 3.0 is an IMPI 1.5 compliant systems management solution. Through the constant monitoring of the server, the RMP 3.0 detects critical faults and automatically alerts administrators to fix th e problem. The RMP 3.0 can send SNMP traps, emails or pager calls in order to notify the system administrator. If a problem occurs, th e

administrator can use the beRemote features to resolve the problem remotely. Remote Access

The Agilent RMP 3.0 provides an integrated 10/100 MBit LAN interface. With its integrated MAC, only a PHY needs to be connected to the RMP's MII interface to provide LAN access.

In addition to the integrated LAN-port, the RMP 3.0 comes with several serial ports, allowing the connection of a serial console or a modem to the RMP.

The Agilent RMP 3.0 is tested against the IEEE 802.3 standard.

Powerful Processor

The RMP 3.0 uses an ARM CPU running at 192MHz with 16 kB code and 16 kB data cache, providing enough 'horse-power' for high-end remote system management features such as AVR, Remote Storage and more.

In addition, the Agilent RMP 3.0 provides hardware acceler-ation for the most important features such as an additional AVR 'number-cruncher', which enables OEMs to integrate the most powerful single-chip remote management solution into their systems.

Highly integrated solution The RMP 3.0 is a specialized Remote Management Processor. The hardware and software is focused on Baseboard and Remote Management, including Remote Access and KVM functionality. With this focus, it is possible to provide all necessary interfaces and subsystems integrated into a single, small chip. The RMP's 320-pin PBGA package size is about 23x23 millimeters. As little external memory (4MB Flash and 8MB SD-RAM for Agilent Firmware), an external LAN PHY and only some small components are needed, the RMP 3.0 allows the smallest BMC and Remote Management solution available to be built. The RMP 3.0 is therefore the perfect fit for today's super-dense server designs, especially when comparing it to compet-ing full-size PCI cards.

Firmware

The RMP 3.0 firmware can be divided into several parts: The core firmware, the Baseboard controller, beRemote, security features and development interfaces.

Core Firmware Features The RMP 3.0 core firmware consists of several features ensuring the safe and

uninterrupted operation of the RMP itself, features for setting up the RMP as well a

firmware update mechanism. For uninterrupted functionality features including self test, a logging of results of self test as well as an RMP watchdog with reset trigger logging are implemented.

The first time setup of the RMP can be done during server boot-up with a BIOS-style menu.

For firmware updates, the RMP 3.0 comes with a reliable and easy- to-use firmware update mechanism, allowing remote firmware updates. In addition, the RMP provides an interface for local firmware updates.

Baseboard Management Contoller

The RMP 3.0 comes with an integrated, IPMI 1.5 compliant, Baseboard Management

Controller (BMC) that allows continous health monitoring of the computer system and basic remote control functions such as power cycling. The RMP 3.0 is tested against the ICTS test suite to verify IPMI 1.5 compliance.

The integrated BMC provides Agilent's General Device Access (GDA) method to ease the setup of the sensors connected to the RMP 3.0 via the I²C interface. GDA allows th e sensors in the integrate d database to be described simply instead of hard-coding the settings into the firmware of the BMC. Additionally, there are pre-defined GPIOs for functionality such as heartbeat, server reset, server power and SMI.

Health Monitoring

The RMP 3.0 also offers PWMs and tachometers as well as GPIOs to access information needed for system health monitoring like fan speeds, temperatures, voltages and more. The integrated PWMs allow the direct control of the fan speed by the RMP.

The OEM may also monitor the operating system's health with an OS watchdog.

In addition, the RMP can filter the occurring events and, according to the paging severity settings, the RMP 3.0 notifies system administrators of the event before the server gets into a critical state. The RMP supports LAN and serial ports for notification, sending out SNMP Traps, emails and numeric or alphanumeric pager calls via modem.

Remote Access

The RMP 3.0 provides remote access via its integrated LAN, serial ports or modem (PPP connection). With its embedded webserver, the RMP 3.0 pro-vides an easy- to-use Web-GUI (Graphical User Interface). The GUI is accessible with any computer that has a web-browser installed (Internet Explorer 6.0). From this Web-GUI all functions of the RMP 3.0 like AVR, Remote Disk, Power-Cycle, Sensor Monitoring etc are accessible.

Agilent beRemote

The Agilent beRemote feature set allows administrators to use and work on a remote server as if they were in front of the managed server.

Agilent beRemote includes Advanced Video Redirection, Virtual Mouse and Keyboard (including True Headless server operation), Remote Storage and Serial Console Redirection. Advanced Video Redirection The Agilent RMP 3.0 features Agilent's Advanced Video Redirection. AVR allow s administrators to work remote-ly on a server as if the dmin-istrator were sitting right in front of the system, as AVR provides a "virtual desktop". Compared to other 'console redirection solutions', the RMP 3.0 comes with many

advantages:

· Operating system independent video and text console redirection, including key board and mouse.

· Remote BIOS administration. · Boot monitoring and syste m

interaction from BIOS POST into graphical operating system interface.

· No OS-agents needed

· Allows the encryption of the data sent over LAN during an AVR session using SSL 128 Bit encryption. This provides maximum security for usage with servers handling sensitive data. · Several graphic chips are

supported.

Agilent Remote Storage The RMP 3.0 features Agilent's Remote Storage. Agilent Remote Storage allows administrators to easily transfer data to and from the managed system. The Remote Storage drives are as easy to use as all local drives that the man-aged server has access to: · The server can boot from the

Remote Storage devices such as Floppy, Hard-disk, CD, DVD or image devices

· The Remote Storage devices appear as local drives in the file explorer of the used operating system

· Read and write data · Install applications · Remote BIOS updates The source for the data transferred to the server may be the Agilent iSCSI image server application or an iSCSI 1.0 com-pliant device. This feature is espe-cially useful in enterprise datacen-ters with many systems using the same software.

Serial Console Redirection

The RMP 3.0 comes with the pos-sibility to emulate a serial device to the system. These Agilent-unique virtual UARTs allow the easy redirection of a serial port to the management LAN. This is especially advantageous when using the serial consoles of today's operating systems, whether this is the Serial Administrator Console of Windows 2003 or the serial console of a Unix or Linux sys-tem.

The Serial Console Redirection (SCR) also helps save time and money, as it does not need serial connections to the monitored servers because the existing man-agement LAN is used. This elimi-nates the need for serial cables and serial port switches as required by other remote manage-ment solutions offering serial con-soles.

(5)

Software Security

The Agilent RMP 3.0 provides enhanced security features, as do all high-end Remote Management solutions from Agilent. This includes encryp-tion using SSL up to 128 Bit and user authentication. Users can either be set up and stored in the integrated data-base of the RMP 3.0 or the RMP 3.0 can make use of the enterprise's directory services. The RMP 3.0 connects to the external Agilent DS Plug-In when a user tries to login using a secure connection. The Agilent DS Plug-In then con-tacts the directory database server using standard protocols (SSL and LDAP).

The Agilent DS Plug-In supports Sun/Netscape iPlanet Version 5.0 and the Microsoft Advanced Directory Service, which is part of Microsoft Windows 2000.

Fast integration

The RMP 3.0 comes with a complete development toolset. The RMP 3.0 Evaluation and Development Kit contains a specialized RMP 3.0 develop-ment board based on the RMP 3.0 reference design with additional connectors, like JTAG or AMC (Agilent Management Connector), that are valuable for bring-up, development and validation of the complete Remote

Management solution.

The RMP Reference Design is available to OEMs integrating the RMP 3.0 into their servers. The Reference Design includes schematics, the recommended part-list and is fully supported by the standard Agilent

firmware.

In addition to the Reference Design, the Development Kit includes all required documen-tation including hardware and firmware reference, program-mer's guide and several other manuals, including GUI, BIOS integration and information for production of servers with the RMP 3.0 integrated onto the system's mainboard .

The RMP 3.0 allows fast integration by eliminating the need for OEMs to write their own software, as the RMP 3.0 includes complete BMC and Remote Management firmware running on the RMP. This preconfigured software can easily be configured using the integrated database. This configuration includes sensor settings, look and feel and more. The Development Kit includes the Agilent Database Customization Kit (DCK) that provides full access to all configuration settings, as well as a Software Development Kit (SDK) allowing in-depth changes of the feature set. The RMP 3.0 comes with an SNMP MIB that can be changed by OEMs to reflect their specific needs.
