I. PHILOSOPHY

Creative Moments programs are designed to nurture individual growth and help each child reach his/ her true potential. A low child/teacher ratio facilitates these goals. The Christian environment will em-phasize positive self-esteem and the development of social skills.

Creative Moments is a ministry of the New Hanover United Methodist Church. Located on more than 13 rural acres, the spacious church building, sports field, and a playground with modern equipment provide an ideal environment for unique and flexible Christian enrichment programs. The Christian faith, values, symbols, prayers, and Bible stories are woven into the day in natural and age-appropriate ways. Pastor Gil Vining spends time with the children and leads a brief chapel service with singing, sto-ries, and time for sharing and praying each week.

II. PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS

An integrated curriculum centered around exciting weekly themes provides creative, hands-on activities. Encouragement is giv-en to learning through experimgiv-entation and active exploration. Emphasis is placed on the child as an integral part of the family and community.

IV. LICENSING AND REGULATIONS

Creative Moments is licensed and regulated by the PA State Department of Human Services.

Regulations for child care centers are posted on the bulletin board in the front entrance. Many of the regulations are very specific for health and safety procedures and also include staffing and program guidelines. We are required by law to follow these regulations. All of the forms requiring parent/ guardian signatures are those which are required by the state.

Please help us to remain in compliance by returning forms promptly. PLEASE MAKE ANY CHANGES IN ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER, AUTHORIZED PICK-UP PERSONS, ETC. AS NEEDED THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR.

V. ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL

SIGN-IN PROCEDURES: All Parents of full-day preschool, kindergarten and before and after school students are required to record their child’s arrival and departure on the sheets provided on the sign-in table upon entering the building. IT IS EXTREMEMLY IMPORTANT THAT YOU COMPLETE THIS

PROCEDURE ON A DAILY BASIS.

MORNING ARRIVAL:

Daycare (Preschool): Each morning after signing your child in, checking the lunch menu, and hanging up your child’s coat, please bring your child, along with his/her backpack, into the pre-k room. A Creative Moments staff member will be there to greet you. If you have any special needs or concerns for the day, please make our staff aware.

Daycare (School-Aged): Each morning after signing your child in, (Kindergarteners will need to check the lunch menu) please bring your child, along with his/her coat and backpack to their assigned room. A Creative Moments staff member will be there to greet you. If you have any special needs or

concerns for the day, please make our staff aware.

Preschool: You will bring your child, along with his/her coat and backpack to the classroom each morning. Your child’s teacher will be there to greet you. If you have any special needs or concerns for the day, please make our staff aware. The teachers will be in their rooms by 8:50 AM. Please do not drop off any earlier.

It is important for your child’s transition and adjustment time to see that their parents are comfortable with the facility. Once your child has adjusted to their environment, please say “goodbye” and leave the room even if your child is hesitant or tearful. Children usually calm down within seconds or minutes of your departure.

This is an adjustment time for them as well as for you. They may need a few days or few weeks to feel comfortable and secure. Let them know in very concrete terms when you will be picking them up. If their last activity for the day will be snack, tell them that you will pick them up after they finish eating their snack.

(6)

DISMISSAL:

Half-Day Preschool: Children in this program will be dismissed from their classroom or the playground. Parents should park their cars in the back parking lot or on the turn-around driveway. The preschool teacher will dismiss the children on an individual basis after the children gather their belongings. The doors will be unlocked at 11:20 AM for admittance to the building. PLEASE PICK UP YOUR CHILD AND KEEP THEM UNDER YOUR SUPERVISION UNTIL YOU LEAVE THE CHURCH PREMISES.

Full-Day Preschool: Between the hours of 3:15 and 5:30 PM, the children will most likely be in our Din-ing Room, outside, or in Mrs. Hoffman’s room. PLEASE PICK UP YOUR CHILD AND KEEP THEM UNDER YOUR SUPERVISION UNTIL YOU LEAVE THE CHURCH PREMISES. Please record your child’s departure time on the sheets provided at the sign-in table. If you would like to pick up your child prior to 3:15 PM, you will need to call the Creative Moments’ office as the doors will be locked. Someone will then come down to let you in.

School-Aged Program: Between the hours of 3:45 and 5:30 PM, the children will most likely be in our Dining Room, outside, or in the Sanctuary. PLEASE PICK UP YOUR CHILD AND KEEP THEM UNDER YOUR SUPERVISION UNTIL YOU LEAVE THE CHURCH PREMISES. Please record your child’s departure time on the sheets provided at the sign-in table.

RELEASE OF CHILD: Please let us know if someone else is picking up your child or if you are running late so that we can reassure your child. Children will only be released to those persons authorized in

writing or on your pick-up list. In an emergency, a child may be released to an individual upon the oral

designation of the parent, if the identity of the individual can be verified by a staff member. If some-one other than the usual persons will be picking up your child, please give us that person's name, ad-dress, and phone number. Sometimes those whom you ask to pick up your child confuse the pick-up time, become lost, or simply forget because it is not part of their regular routine. By providing us with this information, we can then contact them if they fail to pick up your child at the designated time. You will be charged an Overtime Fee for late pickups. There will be no exceptions to this policy. ENTRY INTO THE BUILDING: From the hours of 6:45 to 9:00 AM, 11:20 to 11:40 AM, and 3:15 to 5:30 PM, the doors will be open and there will be a staff member in the front lobby area. For all other hours, all of the doors will be locked. If no one is in the lobby area, please call the Creative Moments phone. A staff member will then come and let you in. If you cannot reach someone on the CM phone, please call the church office (610-323-2353) and tell them you are trying to gain access to Creative Moments. CANCELLATIONS: The facility will make every attempt to be open for all programs except 2 and 3 day half-day preschool when Boyertown School District has an emergency school closing. Announcements will be made via the Remind App (text). If it is necessary to close Creative Moments early because of inclement weather, power failure, or for any other reason, parents will be contacted by text message via Remind.

HALF-DAY PRESCHOOL: Half-day preschool will be cancelled when Boyertown School District is closed.

Delays:

1-hour—preschool will begin at 10:00AM and end at 12:30PM. 2-hour—preschool will begin at 11:00AM and end at 1:30PM. Since your child will be at preschool during lunchtime, we ask that you send a packed lunch on those days. Creative Moments will provide the milk. Also on these days, teachers will bring their classes to the back doors for pick-up.

VI. HEALTH POLICIES

The PA State Department of Human Services regulates very specifically health and safety standards for the physical welfare of the children and staff. These regulations require the staff to follow certain pro-cedures for your child’s health and safety. Please help us to remain in compliance with these regula-tions by your cooperation and understanding.

MEDICAL HEALTH FORMS will be mailed to you each year at the end of July. These must be completed before a child attends any session at Creative Moments. The forms should be updated if necessary during the school calendar year. Parents of existing students will be notified in writing when their child’s physical form is about to expire.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO KEEP US INFORMED OF ANY CHANGES IN YOUR CHILD’S HEALTH STATUS. FIRST AID: All of our staff members are certified in first aid and CPR by the American Red Cross. Each room is supplied with a first aid kit; travel first-aid kits are available to take on field trips.

ILLNESS: As the seasons change it seems that young children are bombarded by colds and viruses. While we certainly could not expect you to keep your child home each time they cough or sneeze, please keep your child home if:

• They have diarrhea or are vomiting—must be symptom free for 24 hours.

• They have had a fever during the past 24 hours (A fever is considered to be 100° or higher.)—must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine.

• They have been on an antibiotic for less than 24 hours.

• They have a heavy nasal discharge.

• They have a constant cough not due to allergies.

• They are fussy, cranky, over-tired, or just not themselves.

If you are keeping your child home, please make sure that you contact the Creative Moments director to let us know that your child will not be attending.

Your child may be sent home if they appear to have symptoms of illness, such as a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. In such cases, they will be isolated from the others and a parent or designated person from your list will be contacted to come and get them. If your child has an elevated temperature (< 100°), you will be made aware but will not be obligated to come pick up the child.

HEAD LICE: A child with head lice (pediculosis capitis) or nits (eggs) will immediately be sent home from Creative Moments. Creative Moments has a Nit-Free policy.

Procedures for children to return to Creative Moments:

Pre-K Students: After being treated, the students may return to Creative Moments the next day. Be-fore admittance into the school the child will be checked by a trained staff member. This process will continue for a period of 7 days (as per the PA Health Code 27.71). If a nit is to be found within that 7 day period, the child will not be allowed to stay at Creative Moments, must be combed through again, and the 7 day process will begin again.

School-Aged Students: Creative Moments will follow the policies of the Boyertown Area School Dis-trict. (Please refer to the current BASD Student Handbook.) If they are not cleared by the school, they will not be able to attend Creative Moments.

(8)

MEDICATIONS: Medications that need to be taken during school hours must be given to the teacher in their original containers (prescription and/or over-the-counter). Parental permission to administer the medication must be in writing. Medication forms will be kept detailing the amount and times of each dosage given to your child. These forms are available from your child’s teacher or the director. NO MEDICATION WILL BE GIVEN WITHOUT PARENTAL PERMISSION.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY: In the case of a medical emergency, an immediate attempt will be made to contact a parent. If necessary, we will call 911. Until the arrival of a parent or paramedics, the director or teacher will be responsible for the care of your child. Once the parent and/or paramedics arrive, that person[s] will assume responsibility for the child’s care.

VII. SAFETY AND DISCIPLINE

TOYS FROM HOME: The opening days of school can be an anxious time for children. To ease this tran-sition a favorite stuffed animal, doll, or toy may provide comfort to them. Show and Tell Days may have them bringing in certain specified items; books, records, or other materials related to the curricu-lum. Other than these exceptions, we ask that children’s personal toys be kept at home. They may get lost, broken, or become an object of frustration for others

Toy guns, knives, swords, and other aggressive oriented play items are prohibited.

CLOTHING: Please consider your child’s comfort, the messy art materials, and the playground when dressing your child for school. Elastic waist-band pants are easiest to manage in the bathroom and help prevent “too-late” accidents. Rubber-soled shoes are safest on the floors and for the playground activities of running, climbing and jumping. Washable, sturdy, no-frills clothing are always appropriate for messy art activities. Hats and mittens are a must when the weather gets cold and windy on the playground. As we do go sledding and play in the snow, boots and snow pants will be necessary on snowy days. PLEASE LABEL ALL OF YOUR CHILD’S BELONGINGS WITH THEIR NAME.

OUTSIDE ATTIRE: The children will be outside each day whether it’s out on the playground playing, outside for a classroom activity or walking to and waiting for the bus. Please dress your child appropri-ately for the weather according to the following chart:

• 65° and higher—children will not be expected to wear a jacket

• 50°-64°—a light jacket or sweatshirt is acceptable

• 40°-49°—a coat will be required

• 25°-39°—a coat with hat and gloves

• 24° and below children will not be going outside to play. Exception: snow days and sledding days when teachers request appropriate clothing (snow pants, boots, etc.).

(9)

Please feel free to discuss with your child’s teacher any concerns or questions you may have, even if it may seem insignificant or “silly”. If you would like to schedule a conference with either the teacher or director, please let them know when you arrive. If a teacher needs your input or has a concern, she will either send a note home or contact you by phone.

SNACKS: Parents will be requested to donate some snacks for the half-day and full-day preschools as well as the kindergarten program. Each teacher will establish their own routine. Please send in healthy snacks; for example: pretzels, crackers, pre-popped popcorn, fruit, or prepackaged snack foods.

LUNCHES: All children attending the full-day preschool and kindergarten programs will be provided with a nutritious lunch between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM. Monthly menus will be posted on the sign -in table. You can also check the New Hanover UMC website to pr-int out a menu. *(See below for - in-structions.) Please check the menu on a daily basis to make sure your child is happy with the entrée. A disliked entrée may be substituted with a sandwich choice of the following: peanut butter and jelly, ham and cheese, bologna and cheese, or any variation of the before stated sandwiches. Please place a written request in the lunch substitute box on the sign-in table. Note that the menu is subject to change without notice. We do discourage the packing of lunches from home.

*Directions for finding the menu on our website:

• Go to www.newhanoverumc.org

• Click on “Menu” • Click “For Kids”

• Click “Creative Moments”

• Go to the bottom of the page and click the “lunch menu” link.

REST TIME: All children in the full-day preschool program need to have a sleeping pad/bag for the rest period after lunch. Sleeping bags should be labeled with the child’s name and taken home at the end of each month for laundering. Be mindful that we have a limited amount of space for each child. A smaller (child-size) sleeping pad/bag is a must. If bringing in a pillow, please make sure it is a travel size pillow.

CELEBRATIONS: Holidays and birthdays are special days for the children. Each teacher has her own special way of celebrating these days. You may bring in a special treat or snack to celebrate birthdays. Munchkins, muffins, cookies, or brownies are easier for children to handle than cupcakes or a cake; many children lick the icing and leave the cake portion. Please check with your child’s teacher when it is time to celebrate their special day.

Holiday celebrations are planned by teachers and children from each individual class. Through notes from teachers and postings in the classroom, you will be informed of dates, times, and any special con-tributions to be made.

(10)

SUPERVISION: Children will be supervised at all times by either a teacher or teacher’s aide. This in-cludes indoor and outdoor activities, bathroom needs, meal, and snack times. Discipline procedures will be developmentally appropriate with the end goal being self-discipline and respect for self as well as others. We believe in a positive approach with children.

DISCIPLINE: At times children become overwhelmed by their environment, by their emotions, by their peers. Some children may act aggressively towards others or with objects. Sometimes children are just being children when they punch each other, grab things from each other, or say unkind words. Our responsibility as teachers and parents is guiding them through these normal and sometimes diffi-cult emotions. There will be occasions when a child will need to be removed from the group to sit next to a teacher or teacher’s aide who will then help them to resolve their situation. Examples are below:

• Stop the action

• Re-direct the action

• Look for positive intent

• Educate

• Set clear verbal limits

• Provide Choices

• Use active listening techniques

• “Think About It” time–a one-minute timer is set; the first minute the child thinks about what they’ve done; the second minute they think about what they could have done differ-ently, then they talk about those things with the director, teacher or teacher’s aide.

AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR: At other times, more aggressive behavior may result in injury to others which may even leave a visible mark upon another person. In these situations, your child’s teacher and/or the director will notify the parents directly.

DISMISSAL: The staff will make every attempt to meet the needs of each child enrolled in the program. However, if a child’s needs are not being met by our program and/or staff, the director may ask the parent to withdraw the child from the program.

VIII. PROGRAM

CORRESPONDENCE: Communication is a vital link in any program. Please look for special notices to be sent home. Please check your mailbox either in your child’s room or in the lobby each day. There also may be notes posted at the sign in table by the sign-in sheets. It is important as well, to make sure that you accept the invitation from Kristin via the Remind App. This is one of the ways that both teachers and Kristin communicate with parents via text.

(11)

PARENT/TEACHER COMMUNICATION: In addition to written communications, verbal communication is just as vital. Children are sensitive to their environment and may react to any changes in routine. Some may become more emotional, withdrawn, or aggressive if a member of the family (including pets) is in the hospital, away on a business trip, or experiencing a serious illness. Please let us know so we may be aware of any changes. We can then be sensitive to your child’s needs.

FIELD TRIPS: Each class enjoys local field trips each year. Permission slips and trip details will be pro-vided at least one week in advance. Details on modes of transportation will be propro-vided with each in-dividual trip.
