I had a very broad dance training as a youngster. I started dancing at the age of eleven, at a local school in Yorkshire, and went to classes in ballet, jazz, tap and modern musical twice a week. I’m thankful that this broad base gave me so much more to draw on when I finally determined on a career as a classical dancer. At the age of fourteen however, my dream of going to the Royal Ballet School was clearly out of reach, as my training and technique had not focussed on ballet up to that point. I knew I had to find a good school and a good teacher in order to bring me up to the standard required, and so I spent my early teenage years doing a great deal of travelling on buses and trains to attend classes at quality schools. Three years of hard training (and the loss of a meniscus!) finally paid off, and I successfully auditioned for the Royal Ballet Upper School. I spent two years at the School under the tutelage of Walter Trevor, Terry Westmoreland and Piers Beaumont, three entirely different teachers who nonetheless gave me a sound basic technique, a genuine fascination with the classical enchaînement and a profound love and respect for classicism. Their teaching still influences me today and I often find myself passing on their words of wisdom to young dancers.
As Director of Birmingham Royal Ballet, I receive applications for auditions daily and the first thing that I look for is where the applicant was trained, under what teachers, what examination system
has been followed and what marks obtained. Of course, I would never hire a dancer for the Company without personally seeing them first, assessing their personality and getting some sense of their performability, but there is no substitute for sound training and, in a classical Company of real substance, there is no hiding from the technical rigours that every dancer is exposed to. This, of course, is true for all branches of the dance arts. My broad training in various styles, and invaluable experience at the hands of excellent teachers, have not only stood me in great stead for the entirety of my dance career, but have also proved a major influence on my work as a choreographer, and in my role as a Director. I was lucky. Before the advent of the Council for Dance Education and Training and its accreditation system, good training, schools and teachers could only be discovered by experience and word of mouth, often a hit and miss affair. Thanks to the CDET, young aspiring student dancers now have a reliable and approved method of selecting the best courses and vocational training to equip them for their professional lives. In choosing dance as a career, you are on the verge of committing to one of the most painful, exacting and precarious branches of the theatre. Choose wisely, for the right training will give you the skills, discipline and inspiration, not only to endure the hardships, but to treasure and value the moments of magic. Theyareworth it!

The performing arts sector is alive and kicking with a healthy West End and increasing audiences for mainstream and independent dance and musical theatre every year. Theatre managements, dance companies, cruise companies and commercial TV need a constant stream of young performers to audition for them.
All the CPDS schools are focused on preparing their students for “professional” theatre. The employment statistics for their graduates are outstanding with over 90% graduate employment in the last couple of years. Every major dance and musical theatre production you see and every national tour, and West End company, has CPDS graduates in its cast.

Over the past six years, the Guide has become the definitive handbook to accredited training for all seeking guidance on professional dance or musical theatre tuition in the UK. Within these pages you will find information on Vocational Dance Schools, Dance Awarding Organisations, Recognised Pre-vocational Schools, Recognised Qualified Dance Teachers and Registered Dance Instructors. Additionally, the Guide is supported by a free telephone and web-based information service – Answers for Dancers, which deals with enquiries on all aspects of dance and musical theatre education and training. WHAT DOES IT COST TO GO TO A VOCATIONAL DANCE SCHOOL? Finding the funds to study on dance courses can be a long and difficult process. A year course at a CDET accredited vocational school can cost between £7,000 and £11,000. This page offers information on funding for vocational courses.
FURTHER EDUCATION (FE) The Dance and Drama Awards (D&DA) were introduced by the government in 1999 to increase access to vocational dance, musical theatre, drama and stage management training. They provide reduced fees for full-time vocational dance and drama students but are only available to those studying for the following qualifications – the National Diploma in Professional Dance, the National Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre and the National Certificate in Professional Classical Ballet. The qualifications are all awarded by Trinity College London (TCL) and are only available at one of the 22 providers TCL validates.
A limited number of D&DAs are awarded each year and they are allocated by the 22 schools to students showing most potential at audition. Students intending to apply for an award should contact a vocational school directly to enquire if it has D&DA funded places available. The 22 schools will make an award to a student regardless of his/her income but where students are judged to be equally talented their financial circumstances will be taken into consideration. To be eligible for an award a student must be an EU national at the start of the course and have been resident in the EU for at least 3 years before the course begins. Students who are offered Awards will have to make a contribution to their fees. The contribution for 2010-2011 is set at £1,275. Students who cannot afford £1,275 or who need further financial assistance for living and learning costs may be eligible for additional funding from a means tested FE fund. Schools offering DaDAs will be able to provide
additional information – their details are available in this Guide and on the CDET website www.cdet.org.uk. HIGHER EDUCATION (HE)
Higher Education courses lead to a degree, diploma or certificate validated or awarded by a university; a number are now also designated ‘vocational’. Students following HE dance courses do not qualify for D&DAs but are eligible for mandatory, Higher Education awards which cover the greater part of tuition fees. Like any UK (or EU) student entering Higher Education, students are eligible to apply for help with the student fee contribution (the maximum is £3,225 from 2009/10 and £3,290 for 2010/11) and have access to Student Loan for Fees. However if you have received government funding for a previous course it is unlikely you will be eligible. The government website www.direct.gov.uk has comprehensive information about student finance for students undertaking Higher Education courses.
MUSIC AND DANCE SCHEME (MDS) For students wishing to train in Classical Ballet the DfES also funds the Music and Dance Scheme (MDS) which provides for children and young people between the ages of 8 (11 for ballet) and 18 to receive an academic education alongside the best specialist ballet training available. At present four dance schools (Elmhurst School for Dance, The Hammond School, The Royal Ballet School and Tring Park School for the Performing Arts) offer MDS places to students at 11. In addition, the government has announced new national grants for exceptionally talented children allowing them to gain access to specialist dance training in genres other than ballet in the Centres for Advanced Training (CAT). Contact the DfES Music and Dance Scheme for more information – 01325 391150. www.dfes.gov.uk/mds Finally, some courses may not be funded by any awards. In these cases, students are responsible for the full cost of fees and may need to secure private funding via loans, scholarships and trusts.

This guide offers information on vocational dance and musical theatre schools accredited by the Council for Dance Education and Training. Individual entries confirm the courses on offer but you are strongly advised to visit each school’s website and contact the admissions office directly to obtain a copy of a prospectus. You will also need to determine the method and deadline for applications for each school and, most importantly, confirm that you meet any specific entry requirements. You need to decide if you will apply for a course at one vocational school or several but do remember that multiple applications are expensive. You will have to pay a fee for each audition, plus travel and accommodation costs. It might be sensible to work out your audition budget first and make applications accordingly.
Make sure you read application forms carefully and provide the information requested in a neat and professional manner. An application form with corrections and mistakes will create a poor impression and if you are asked to provide a headshot photograph, do so – not a picture of you and your friends on a night out! Read through and check completed forms for spelling and grammar mistakes – it is worth asking someone else, perhaps a teacher or parent to look over an application form before you send it. Take care with your answers and do not exaggerate or invent things you have done. If a vocational school knows you have limited experience it will be taken into account at the time of audition. Remember, course directors and tutors are experts at spotting potential and the suitability for training.
If you have any special needs it is vital that you tell the school at the application stage so that arrangements may be made for you at audition or interview. E Q U I T Y
The majority of professionals working in the entertainment industry recognise the value of belonging to their trade union. In the case of dancers and choreographers their union is Equity which has been a cornerstone of the industry for nearly 80 years. The work of the union is done in collaboration by staff and members and falls into three main areas:
1) to negotiate minimum working terms and conditions across the industry 2) to be the national and international
campaigning voice for UK artists ensuring their issues are heard at the highest levels
3) to provide a range of services (insurance, pension, audition information, legal and welfare help etc) giving practical support for Equity members
Without Equity the framework of safeguards and protections that members have struggled to achieve would disappear and everyone would be both worse off and much more vulnerable. But any union is only as strong as its members which is why professionals choose to join Equity as soon as they are eligible. Student membership puts you in touch with the union and provides opportunities to get involved.

Spotlight Dancers is the only dedicated dance directory in the UK. It contains details for hundreds of professionally trained dancers with a variety of different skills and is used by casting directors, producers, directors and choreographers to cast dancers for their projects. Projects cast using Spotlight Dancers include feature films, musicals, commercials, music videos, still photography shoots, holiday and cruise ship entertainment. Any dancer aged 16+ with recognised professional dance training is eligible for membership of Spotlight Dancers. CDET graduates in their final year are automatically entitled to half price membership.

A vital and unique feature of this course is the provision of one to one singing and portfolio lessons, which ensure students can produce a well-placed consistent sound throughout the vocal range and help each student build a varied repertoire of songs. Ensemble singing and performance classes develop the competence and confidence to sing in front of an audience. Acting, improvisation, voice and speech classes help students to create truthful performances by developing imagination, concentration and observation. Students develop confidence and creativity in using a range of acting styles, texts and techniques, both for the stage and in front of the camera. Cambridge Performing Arts College is uniquely situated, close to the main railway station and half a mile from the city centre. Being close to London (45 mins. by train) many of our full time staff and guest teachers are able to commute, keeping pace with the changes in the professional world. The National Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre and National Diploma in Professional Dance. On the National Diploma courses

COURSES OFFERED – OTHER We run one of the most well established foundation courses in the country. This course is designed for students who are either late starters, or who wish to add dance to existing skills such as acting or singing. There is a one year intensive course, designed for students with previous training (e.g. university course) who wish to develop a new discipline or to add the professional polish in order to pursue a performing career.

26 POLICYElmhurst, the oldest vocational ballet school in the UK, prepares its students for professional careers in ballet and related dance styles. They benefit greatly from the school’s close association with Birmingham Royal Ballet. Through the auditions process, they are selected according to their perceived potential and their commitment to dance. Their technical skills are then developed and their artistry and creativity nurtured. Choreographic studies are taught to each year group and the students’ own choreographic pieces are showcased. In 2004 Elmhurst re-located to Edgbaston, Birmingham to be near the Birmingham Royal Ballet Company. The new school has been specifically designed to meet the requirements of professional dance training now and for the future. This exciting move constituted a multi-million pound investment in the future of dance education and provides a centre of excellence, centrally located away from London.

Students study for the National Diploma in Professional Dance, a Level 6 qualification awarded by Trinity College London. Graduates of the Diploma can apply to Middlesex University to enrol on a conversion course, leading to a BA (Hons) Professional Practice (BAPP). The School also offers a range of academic courses to complement its artistic programmes to full A-level. External qualifications offered include Royal Academy of Dance vocational graded qualifications. Students may be self-funded or in receipt of a Dance & Drama Award.
In addition to a faculty of distinguished teachers and professional artists, Elmhurst benefits from a close association with Birmingham Royal Ballet. Company members frequently visit to give master classes to students. Subject to satisfactory progress
students may join company class and be considered for inclusion in Birmingham Royal Ballet productions.

The Hammond is a centre of creativity and excellence based in the North West of England. The main emphasis of the Dance and Musical Theatre Course is on a practical training with a comprehensive range of dance and musical theatre skills. The college offers a single three-year course, Dance and Musical Theatre, from which it delivers both the Trinity College London Diplomas in Professional Dance or Musical Theatre. Students receive a balanced training in all areas of the performing arts to develop the versatility required for the commercial theatre.
The course is dance-based. All students study Classical Ballet, Contemporary, Jazz and Tap and these dance subjects are balanced with Acting, Singing and Musical Theatre Studies. During the first two years of training every student follows the same course, laying the foundation for further
specialisation in the third year. Students choose which Diploma path they wish to follow once their strengths and weaknesses have been assessed. Performances are built into the course from the first term and students are supported and encouraged to develop their confidence in performing in parallel with their technical skills. The course is industry based reflecting the college’s close involvement with the commercial theatre.
HOW TO APPLY
All applicants for the course are auditioned. Entry is by audition only and entry forms can be downloaded from the college web site or received by post. The college selects applicants on their talent and potential as future performers. Auditions are normally held from October through to April with recall auditions at the end of the audition cycle to allocate funded places (Dance and Drama Awards). Audition days consist of a Classical Ballet class, a Jazz class, a drama workshop and the solo performance of a song (with sheet music) and a dance solo.

LIPA offers a three year BA (Hons) Dance degree validated by Liverpool John Moores University. Students have up to 16 dance technique classes per week, in addition to classes in choreography, acting and singing technique, contextual studies and professional development. There are dance technique classes in ballet, jazz, contemporary, street, and tap, plus an innovative Dance Fusions class combining new and traditional dance styles. The students’ performance projects are directed/choreographed by our staff and, in later stages of the degree, by professionals currently working in the field. LIPA has established links with agents and casting directors and has regular masterclasses and workshops delivered by industry figures. Last year, these included LaVelle Smith Jr, the Emmy-winning US choreographer and Steve Nestar, one of Madonna’s principal dancers and choreographers. Dance students often collaborate with students studying other disciplines at LIPA, including those studying
Music, Acting, Management and Performance Design and Technology. The course aims to provide the best opportunities for gaining and sustaining employment in the commercial dance/entertainment sector. LIPA’s graduates are working in musical theatre and current West End and touring productions. Many have joined reputable dance companies, whilst others have established their own. Many have portfolio careers and have appeared in music videos and TV commercials and gain regular work as dancers and choreographers in the fashion, corporate, hospitality and leisure industries.
OTHER COURSES OFFERED LIPA also offers a one year, full-time LIPA Foundation Certificate in Performing Arts (Dance). This intensive course is intended to help students to develop as multi-faceted performers. It is designed to give them a competitive edge to potentially help them gain a degree place at a leading performing arts institution. The programme is not intended to replace a Level 3 qualification
but to supplement it. Approximately 50% of the time is spent on concentrating on developing the students’ specialist skills in dance. There are also classes in acting and singing, professional studies, acting through song and repertoire as well as two performance project modules. HOW TO APPLY

OFFERED – PERFORMING Musical Theatre-National Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre (Three Year) This Trinity course is designed for the complete performer in the triple disciplines of dance, drama and singing. The emphasis is on the overlapping of these skills rather than their isolation. Ballet and a variety of Jazz styles are the daily core dance activities as well as Tap and jazz partnering/Adagio on the weekly timetable.
For appropriate body management you are assisted through diagnostics, body conditioning, pilates and nutrition sessions. Drama sessions develop your understanding, flexibility, technical skills and performance via a range of acting styles- you will perform in drama pieces as well as musical theatre shows. Singing tuition includes weekly choral classes, two timetabled one to one lessons on technique and repertoire, culminating in a Performance Workshop. There are lessons in
music theory, history of musical theatre and audition technique. The aim is to produce a technically competent performer, who is able to communicate with an audience through characterisation and the development of emotion.
Expert Teaching Staff, Guest Lecturers/ Master classes and visiting Directors/ Agents all ensure you continuously strive to meet your personal challenges. To help you maintain your high standards individual progress is closely monitored, regular tutorials and assessments ensure you receive continual feedback and support. LTS provides an intimate and friendly atmosphere at the school and small classes will encourage your creativity, confidence and versatility.
OTHER COURSES OFFERED Musical Theatre–Foundation (One Year) The increasingly popular one year course for students of 16 years and over is an excellent preparation for longer term training. The focus throughout the year will be on Dance, Drama and Singing, developing technique and ability. One to one technical singing
forms a vital part of your year, complementing and enhancing your development. Dance Performers course (One Year) For students who wish to pursue a career as a professional dancer. You will receive expert tuition in dance subjects plus tuition in singing to enhance your career possibilities. The experienced, professional staff and visiting guest performers will put you through your paces. The Performance workshops, Audition workshops and career preparation will form a vital part of your course.

Located in the heart of Central London, 5 minutes from London's West End. The London Studio Centre is currently involved in discussions with the University of the Arts London about relocating to a dramatic new landmark building for Autumn 2011. The remarkable new 39,000 square-metre campus for Central Saint Martins in Kings Cross will house the London Studio Centre in their Performance Centre which will include a public theatre, studios and rehearsal spaces.

VOCATIONAL COURSES OFFERED – PERFORMING
The three year course at the London Studio Centre is accredited by the Council for Dance Education and Training (UK). B.A. Hons. Theatre Dance (Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Jazz Theatre Dance, Music Theatre), validated by the University of the Arts London. The course is aimed at the 18 year old student with A-levels, or equivalent qualifications, who wishes to pursue a professional training and academic studies. This unique degree programme enables students to train for a performing career in either classical ballet, contemporary dance, jazz theatre dance or music theatre whilst at the same time gaining an internationally recognised qualification, which opens the way to further study and an extended career. This programme is subject to the quality assurance procedures established by University of the Arts London.
Current connections with the University of the Arts London and the proposed merger in Autumn 2011 create a fantastic opportunity for creative development and collaboration for our students in an amazing new purpose built development just a stone’s throw away from our existing studios. The new UAL facility will create one of the largest and most creative performing arts centre’s in the world.
A One Year Professional Diploma is available for those students who have completed performing arts training elsewhere and who wish to further their training in a specialist area.
Only students enrolled on the Degree programme may be considered for HEFCE funding.
