Tarlabaşı is now turning back to its glorious days...

As part of Tarlabaşı 360, the largest urban renewal project of Turkey, the town is being restructured maintaining its environmental, historical, architectural and cultural values,

Occupied mostly by middle-class non-Muslims and Levantines, Tarlabaşı saw the emergence of apartments in 1870s which have nearly the same style with Pera, but are more modest. Referred to as the neighborhood of apartments in 1910s,

the area demonstrated one the best examples of urban modernization seen in İstanbul in the 19th century with its closely spaced fabric, aesthetical values and richness of embellishments.

While new businesses were being opened on both sides of Tarlabaşı Street, the shop owners just had to walk for 5 minutes a few streets down or to Pera in order to go from

their houses to their shops. As the center of ambassadors and international connections, Pera had a deeply sophisticated entertainment and culture life, and structures supporting this life. One of the milestones that affected the rapidly-developing center of the city was the fire in 1870. Since the part from Taksim to Galatasaray was completely burned out, planning activities for restructuring this area were brought to the agenda.

While Pera was reconstructed in a much more glorious manner after 1870, new buildings constructed on the empty lands after the fire hosted local and international upper-class.

And Begins Life

In Tarlabaşı...

The first residents of Tarlabaşı were mostly employees of embassies located around Pera, such as English and Italian Embassies, as well as experts in trade, while Muslim citizens looking for the opportunity to settle in this area were very rare until the 1930s.

Muslim families started to come to Beyoğlu slowly after 1930s, and then started to reside in houses they rented or bought in the surroundings.

Southern slopes of Pera that encircled the entrance of Bosporus, and northern slopes that faced the Golden Horn demonstrated a spatial organization that hosted various social classes even in those years.

Settlement of social classes is parallel to the land forms. Tarlabaşı hosted the ambassadors, regardless of being minority, company owners and families with high income in the upper parts of slope, and in the parts nearer to İstiklal Street and its surroundings, while the lower parts developed as the residence area of the class that worked in trade and service industry.

Movement of embassies to Ankara after establishment of Republic eliminated employment opportunities for many people that resided in Tarlabaşı. And thousands of real property that belonged to non-Muslims were transferred in 1943 following the Wealth Tax.

This event influenced not only the constructions in İstiklal Street but also buildings in Tarlabaşı. Tarlabaşı also got its share from the September Events and the migration cycle that spread to the whole country in 1960. While the public lands and historical areas got

occupied in the city that allowed immigrants densely, Tarlabaşı buildings which were abandoned due to the events that took place one after another were started to be rented by opportunists as cheap houses.

URBAN RENEWAL

Urban renewal refers to restoration of historical buildings, and renewal of other buildings through a modern architectural interpretation that is faithful to the original. Urban transformation, on the other hand, is a more general concept, and refers to elimination of problems that affect the urban fabric negatively. Even though urban renewal is one of the implementation tools of urban transformation, it differs from urban transformation since it requires more different specialties and approaches in sociological and architectural terms.

Urban renewal is the renewal of constructions that are important as a historical and urban value concerning the

architectural fabric of city, by sticking to the originals. Purpose of urban renewal is renewing the construction stock and its entire infrastructure, which poses unhealthiness and danger for its residents due to wear and neglect. Protection of historical urban fabric as well as bringing the requirements of today and standard necessities of the time to these housings and life spaces are the other aims. Urban renewal enables the historical area of city to gain its desired value and be re-owned by the city thanks to the protective and modern approaches of specialist architectures in their fields.

PROJECT GROUP

We, the project group, have examined the whole project region and carried out works based on analyses, considering the importance of understanding the region’s historical, social and economical aspects as well as learning the urban architecture that will be passed on to future.

In this research, we carefully reviewed matters such as constructions, plans, location organizations and scenarios of stairs, elevators, ramps, escalator, etc. inside the buildings, road slopes, construction entrance solutions, components that make up the project, handling and load transfer models, roof coatings and facade systems, and carried out meticulous work.

We utilized high quality materials offered by today’s technologies as well as historical pieces that are taken out from the original buildings and can be reused. We added a historical touch on the project of tomorrow.
