Student Testimonial

Hi, my name is Jasmine Gardner. I am a past student

from Kiama High School and in Year 12 I did a TVET

Course in Hairdressing.

Six months into the course I decided that I loved

hairdressing and applied for a job as a salon assistant

with a salon called Angels Hair. I was offered the job

from lots of other young applicants because of my

TVET experience and when I left school I was offered

an apprenticeship.

I am so glad I chose to do the TVET Course. It was fun

and gave me a head start in my career. I would highly

recommend TVET to other students, especially if they

are not quite sure of what they would like to do in the

future but want to give something a try.

What is TVET?

If you’re a secondary

school student in

Years 11 or 12, you can

choose to study a TAFE

Vocational Education

and Training (TVET)

course while you’re still

at school. TVET gives

you the opportunity to

complete your HSC while

you gain practical work

It’s a great way to build your career and your employability skills. The skills you gain during your TVET course are invaluable and will give you a fantastic head start in life.

TVET courses are a great choice as they allow you to gain dual accreditation from the NSW Board of Studies and TAFE NSW at the same time. Your TVET course can also contribute to your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) if it is classifi ed as an Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) course.

How will a TVET course

benefit me?

TVET – TAFE

While at School

(5)

to obtain advanced standing and/or continuing student status in TAFE once you complete your course successfully. Industry recognises the quality of TAFE trained workers. This means your TVET course is incredibly powerful if you would like to enter the labour market, particularly if your course includes a work placement component.

TVET Courses:

• have been developed or endorsed by the NSW Board of Studies

• provide credit towards an AQF (Australian Qualifi cations Framework) qualifi cation which is nationally recognised

• count as units of study on the Year 11 Record of Achievement or the Year 12 HSC

• may contribute to the ATAR (depending on course selected) • assist you to acquire new skills and

capabilities

• are appropriate for any ability level, including those who plan to proceed to higher education study

• are taught by teachers who have direct industry links

• provide all equipment, materials, protective clothing and texts

• provide articulation into traineeship or apprenticeships

• provide maximum credit transfer into a TAFE NSW Certifi cate course after you leave school.

Will I get a TAFE

Certificate?

At the end of your TVET course, you may receive two sets of credentials.

If you successfully complete the course ie. NSW Board of Studies HSC requirements, your TVET course will be included on your HSC Certifi cate. If you meet the TAFE requirements you will receive

either a Certifi cate or a Statement of Competencies achieved from TAFE NSW.

Types of TVET Courses

All TVET courses count towards HSC unit credit and are classifi ed by the NSW Board of Studies as either Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) courses or Board Endorsed Courses (BEC).

Industry Curriculum Framework courses can be examinable and count towards the calculation of your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

Board Endorsed courses are endorsed by the Board of Studies but are not examinable and do not contribute to the ATAR.

Please note: Correct at time of printing. Courses will be offered subject to suffi cient demand and resources.

(6)

Extension Courses

You may be able to undertake additional units of study in some courses to gain an additional qualifi cation including the completion of a full Certifi cate or an additional Statement of Attainment. Students must be enrolled in or have completed the 240 hours Industry Curriculum Framework before enrolling in an extension course.

Work Placement

Some courses require you to complete work placement. This is a NSW Board of Studies requirement and work placement must be completed to ensure the course is counted towards either your preliminary or HSC year of study. Work placement requirements for all courses are shown in this guide.

Recognition of Prior

such as at School/TAFE, your previous studies and results will be recognised. You will not have to repeat that training and assessment. Additionally if through previous work or life experiences you have already developed high level skills in this course area, these may also be recognised. Your teacher or TVET Coordinator can provide more details of the recognition process.

Attendance at TAFE

TVET courses are generally offered at a TAFE Campus for 4 hours, one afternoon per week over one or two years. For more information visit the TVET website: www. illawarra.tafensw.edu.au/tvet

What are the course

costs?

There is no TAFE fee for NSW government school students, as NSW government

Non-government schools also pay TVET costs directly to TAFE, but some schools may require their TVET students to pay additional fees to the school to contribute to the cost of TAFE-delivered courses. See your school’s Career Advisor or VET for Schools Coordinator regarding course costs

What are the travel

costs?

You are responsible for arranging and paying for travel to and from TVET classes.

Students with

Additional Needs

Students with additional needs and disabilities are encouraged to enrol in and complete VET courses delivered at TAFE as part of the TVET program.

• student career choices

• the recommendation of the School Learning and Support team

• the likelihood of the student achieving all or some of the competencies or elements of competency for the course

School Based

Apprenticeships/Traineeships

Both of these options allow students to obtain valuable work skills and experience whilst undertaking paid part-time work as part of their HSC study. School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are available in many trade and non-trade areas including:

• Automotive (Mechanical) • Automotive (Vehicle Painting) • Constructions (Carpentry) • Electrical
