About Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University

The college was founded in 1889 during the period of Khedawy Tawfik and was located in the old Giza Palace, which remains the same site of the college until now. In 1911, its name was changed to Agricultural High School awarding a high diploma in agriculture. Mr. Abdel Hamid Fathy was the first Egyptian dean after 5 British deans. In 1935, the Agricultural High School joined the Egyptian University (Cairo University) to be the first college of agriculture in Egypt and in the middle east. Since that time, the college awarded 35006 Bachelor degrees in agricultural

sciences. The total number of students currently enrolled at the bachelor level is about 3000 students.

Graduate program at the college started in 1943 and the first Ph.D. was awarded in 1945.

Since then, the college awarded about 3262 M.Sc. and 1755 Ph.D. degrees.

The college graduated several prominent leaders in various fields including agriculture, development, scientific research, literature, art, media, politics, sports and other areas. To name a few examples, Former Head of Parliament Engineer Sayed Maraay (graduated 1937), Former Prime Ministers, Prof. Dr. Kamal Ramzy

Estino (graduated 1934) and Prof. Dr. Kamal El Ganzoury (graduate 1957), Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Yousef Wally (graduated 1951), His Highness member of the Supreme Council of UAE and Ruler of Sharjah Sheihk (Dr.) Sultan Al Qassimi (graduated 1966), the Former Syrian Prime Minister Eng. Mahmoud El Zagbi (graduated 1963) and 2 Presidents of Cairo University, Prof. Dr. Naguib Hashad (graduated 1933) and Prof. Dr. Naguib El Helaly Gohar (graduated 1964).

It is also an honour for the college that prof. Dr. Ahmed Mostageer, previous dean (graduated 1954) is now a member of El Khaleeden Confederacy for Arabic Language

Goals Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University

1- Providing distinguished educational programs, within the context of contemporary global trends, for both levels of undergraduate, and graduate studies, that cover the areas of agriculture and life sciences, for students from Egypt and the Arab and African countries, to satisfy the needs of all stakeholders interested in the diversified activities of these areas.

2- Developing distinguished programs for adult education, continuing education and distance education, for those who are interested in the acquisition of modern agricultural professional knowledge and skills, in all areas of modernizing the techniques and methods of agricultural production, processing, and marketing, in addition to the areas of sustainable development, and improving the quality of rural life.

3- Updating and supporting the available faculty databases, In order to improve the management of knowledge and information management systems, through which the faculty could have a bank of modern scientific information and knowledge in the areas of Agriculture and Life Sciences, at the national and regional levels.

4- Supporting and developing programs for capacity development for the entire faculty staff members, and their assistants, in the skills of teaching, educational systems and scientific research, in addition to programs for the faculty academic leaders in the areas of leadership, university administration and interpersonal communication skills.

5- Establishing and supporting multi-disciplinary research units and teams from the faculty and all the stakeholders from local, regional and international levels, to study and explore the ways to take the advantage of modern technological developments in both tackling

field problems and facing contemporary challenges (food security, food safety, and improving the quality of life).

6- Supporting the scientific cooperation and relations between the faculty and other interested institutions at the local, regional and international levels, through joint educational, training and research programs, to develop systems of scientific research, education and vocational training for students.

7- Applying a system for quality assurance to improve the levels of performance in the dimensions of institutional capacity and educational effectiveness in order to attain the accreditation of the faculty and its academic programs.

8- Completing the infrastructure of the faculty and developing the sources of information, laboratories and experimental farms, according to the criteria needed for accreditation.
